The laminated Buckypaper/SiC composite was prepared by RF magnetron sputtering. For comparison, the monolithic SiC was also prepared in the present study. The microstructure and morphology of the prepared samples were characterized by SEM and XRD. The Young’s modulus, hardness and stiffness of the samples were investigated by nanoindentation testing. The results showed that the Buckypaper/SiC composite had an obviously multilayered microstructure at the nanoscale. Furthermore, the fracture toughness of the laminated Buckypaper/SiC composite could be improved by crack deflection and platelet pullout mechanisms. The laminated Buckypaper/SiC composite had higher Young’s modulus and stiffness than that of the monolithic SiC. However, its hardness was lower than that of monolithic SiC.

Purpose This paper aims to report the influence of sputtering plasma deposition time on the structural and mechanical properties of the a-axis oriented aluminium nitride (AlN) thin films. Design/methodology/approach The AlN films were prepared using RF magnetron sputtering plasma on a silicon substrate without any external heating with various deposition times. The films were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), atomic force microscope (AFM) and nanoindentation techniques. Findings The XRD results show that the AlN thin films are highly oriented along the (100) AlN plane at various deposition times indicating the a-axis preferred orientation. All the AlN thin films exhibit hexagonal AlN with a wurtzite structure. The hardness and Young’s modulus of AlN thin films with various deposition times were measured using a nanoindenter. The measured hardness of the AlN films on Si was in the range of 14.1 to 14.7 GPa. The surface roughness and the grain size measured using the AFM revealed that both are dependent on the deposition times. Originality/value The novelty of this work lies with a comparison of hardness and Young’s modulus result obtained at different sputtering deposition temperature. This study also provides the relation of AlN thin films’ crystallinity with the hardness of the deposited films.

United Nations has estimated that 130 million people would suffer from osteoarthritis worldwide by 2050. This disease would require patients to undergo a surgery known as Total Hip Replacement (THR) which has a failure rate of approximately 1 % with a lifespan of 20 years. The biomaterials used to manufacture this total hip artroplasty are mainly made of Zirconia-Toughened Alumina. In this work, Zirconia Toughened Alumina (ZTA) composites with 10 vol% Y-TZP content were doped with small amount (0.01 to 1 wt%) of graphene oxide (GO). The GO-doped ZTA composites were produced via two-stage sintering with T1 ranging between 1400°C and 1550°C, heating rate of 20°C/min, followed by T2 of 1350°C and 12 hours holding time. The sintered ZTA samples were then evaluated on its microstructure and mechanical properties such as bulk density, Vickers hardness, Young’s modulus and fracture toughness to investigate the effect of GO addition on ZTA samples prepared via two-stage sintering. The results showed that ZTA composites containing up 0.1 wt% GO is beneficial in improving the microstructural and mechanical properties of ZTA composites prepared via two-stage sintering. The sample recorded a high hardness of up to 18.5 GPa, Young’s modulus of 406 GPa and fracture toughness of 5.8 MPam1/2 when sintered at T1 of 1450℃.

Effects of carbon nanotubes (CNT) addition on mechanical properties, electric conductivity and oxidation resistance of CNT/Al2O3-TiC composite were investigated. It was found that flexural strength, Young’s modulus and fracture toughness of the composites were improved by addition of more than 2 vol%-CNT. In the composites with more than 3 vol%-CNT, the oxidation resistance of the composite was degraded. In comparison with Al2O3-26vol%TiC sample as TiC particle-percolated sample, the Al2O3-12vol%TiC-3vol%CNT sample, which is not TiC particle-percolated sample, shows almost the same mechanical properties and electric conductivity, and also shows thinner oxidized region after oxidation at 1200°C due to less TiC in the composite.

In this paper, WC-10Ni3Al cemented carbides were prepared by the powder metallurgy method, and the effects of ball-milling powders with two different organic solvents on the microstructure and mechanical properties of cemented carbides were studied. We show that the oxygen in the organic solvent can be absorbed into the mixed powders by ball-milling when ethanol (CH3CH2OH) is used as a ball-milling suspension. This oxygen leads to the formation of α-Al2O3 during sintering, which improves the fracture toughness, due to crack deflection and bridging, while the formation of η-phase (Ni3W3C) inhibits the grain growth and increases the hardness. Alternatively, samples milled using cyclohexane (C6H12) showed grain growth during processing, which led to a decrease in hardness. Therefore, the increase of oxygen content from using organic solvents during milling improves the properties of WC-Ni3Al composites. The growth of WC grains can be inhibited and the hardness can be improved without loss of toughness by self-generating α-Al2O3 and η-phase (Ni3W3C).

A novel transparent polycrystalline silicon nitride was fabricated by hot-press sintering with MgO and AlN as additives. The mixed powder with 3 wt.% MgO and 9 wt.% AlN was sintered at 1900oC for 1 hour under 30 MPa pressure in a nitrogen gas atmosphere. Transparent polycrystalline silicon nitride was successfully fabricated. The mechanical properties such as density, hardness, young’s modulus, fracture strength and fracture toughness were evaluated. The effect of α/β phase on the mechanical properties of transparent polycrystalline silicon nitride was investigated. The properties were changed depending on the amount of α/β phase. The hardness and Young's modulus increased with increasing the volume fraction of α-phase fraction as a reflection of the higher hardness of α-phase Si3N4. The fracture toughness and fracture strength decreased with decreasing the volume fraction of β-phase Si3N4.

The effect of doping small amounts of Magnesium Oxide ranging between 0 to 1 vol% on Zirconia Toughened Alumina (ZTA) composites which is one of main biomaterial used for production of total hip arthroplasty were investigated. The samples were produced via conventional two-stage sintering with T1 varies between 1450°C and 1550°C with heating rate of 20°C/min. The samples were then rapid cooled to T2 set at 1400°C with holding time of 12 hours. The microstructural and mechanical properties of the two-stage sintered ZTA are then investigated to determine the feasibility of MgO addition. Combination of two-stage sintering at T1 above 1500 and also small amount of MgO up to 0.5 vol% were shown to have positive effect on ZTA which exhibited improvement on its grain size, mechanical properties such as Vickers hardness, Young’s modulus and fracture toughness compared to undoped ZTA composites. The sample with 0.5 vol% MgO addition sintered at T1 of 1500°C and T2 1400°C was able to achieve Vickers hardness of 19.6 GPa, Young’s modulus of 408 GPa and fracture toughness of 6.8 MPam1/2 without significant grain growth compared to undoped ZTA composites.

AbstractHydrogenated diamond like Carbon (H-DLC) is a promising lubricious coating that attracted a great deal of interest in recent years mainly because of its outstanding tribological properties. In this study, the nano-mechanical and -tribological properties of a range of H-DLC films were investigated. Specifically, four kinds of H-DLC coatings were produced on Si substrates in pure acetylene, pure methane, 25% methane + 75% hydrogen, 50% methane + 50% hydrogen discharge plasmas using a plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD) system. Nano indentation was performed to measure the mechanical properties such as hardness and young's modulus and nanoscartching was performed to investigate the frictional behavior and wear mechanism of the H-DLC samples in open air. Moreover, Vickers indentation method was utilized to assess the fracture toughness of the samples. The results revealed that there is a strong correlation between the mechanical properties (hardness, young's modulus, fracture toughness) and the friction coefficient of DLC coatings and the source gas chemistry. Lower hydrogen to carbon ratio in source gas leads to higher hardness, young's modulus, fracture toughness and lower friction coefficient. Furthermore, lower wear volume of the coated materials was observed when the friction coefficient was lower. It was also confirmed that lower hydrogen content of the DLC coating leads to higher wear resistance under nanoscratch conditions.

Biodegradable β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP)/poly (lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) composites were synthesized by in situ polymerization with microwave energy. The influence of the β-TCP content in β-TCP/PLGA composites on the molecular weight, crystallinity, microstructure, and mechanical properties was investigated. As the molecular weight of composites decreased, the β-TCP content increased up to 10 wt%, while further raising of the β-TCP content above 10%, the molecular weight increased with increasing β-TCP content. This behavior may be ascribed to the superheating effect or nonthermal effect induced by microwave energy. It was found that the bending strength and Young’s modulus of the β-TCP/PLGA composites were proportional to the molecular weight of PLGA. The bending strength of the β-TCP/PLGA composites ranged from 18 to 38 MPa, while Young’s modulus was in the range from 2 to 6 GPa.
