In the present work, the microstructure evolution of Mg-4Al-2.5Ca alloy during solidification was investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results showed that the as-cast microstructure was typical dendritic structure, consisting of α-Mg and the Al2Ca with a C15 structure formed at inter-dendritic regions. But during slow solidification, the sequence of phase formation of this alloy consisted of following stages: L→ L + α-Mg → L + α-Mg + (Mg, Al)2Ca → α-Mg + (Mg, Al)2Ca + Al2Ca → α-Mg + Al2Ca. Thermal analysis showed that the (Mg, Al)2Ca and Al2Ca phase separation temperature was about 520°C and 510°C respectively, which is different from thermodynamic calculation. With the temperature decreasing, the liquid (Mg, Al)2Ca phase with thick and continuous morphology transformed into lamellar-shaped eutectic phase, and parts of (Mg, Al)2Ca phase translated into Al2Ca phase with bone-shaped and needle-like.

The influence of cooling rates on the solidification and microstructure of rapidly solidified quasicrystal alloy Mg70.8Zn28Nd1.2(at.%) was investigated. The microstructure, phase constitution, phase transition and phase structure of the alloys were examined by means of scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, energy dispersive spectrometer, differential scanning calorimetry. The experimental results showed that the phase composition of as-cast Mg70.8Zn28Nd1.2 alloy includes quasicrystal I-phase and Mg7Zn3 phase. For the rapidly solidified alloy ribbons, when the speed is not higher than 400 r/min, the microstructure includes I-phase, Mg7Zn3 phase and α-Mg phase. When the speed is at the range of 400-2000r/min, the Mg7Zn3 phase disappears and only quasicrystal with α-Mg phase exist. With the increase of cooling rate, the grain size decreases and there are a large number of microcrystals in the microstructure. When the speed reaches higher than 2500 r/min, amorphous phase appeared. Differential thermal analysis showed that quasicrystal exist at about 340°C.

There is a relationship between pores and inclusions. As hypothesis goes, inclusions have an affinity to gather inside the pores and form clusters. Focus of this paper is how solidified dendritic structure affects the pressure field in the liquid and pore precipitation in austenitic stainless steel. Steel sample is a continuously cast bloom. Temperature profile and width of the mushy zone of the strand is modeled according to a constant temperature at the strands surface. Thermal analysis has been performed with differential thermal analysis (DTA) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). Dendrite arm spacing (DAS) is measured with light optical microscopy (LOM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). DAS is represented as the weight average of the distance between parallel sets of primary dendrite stems. Pressure field is calculated based on Darcys law. Pore formation is described through segregation of the gas components and pressure field in the liquid.

Fiberglass continuous strand mat(CSM)/poly(urethane-isocyanurate) composites were formed by SRIM process, treated under different conditions and then characterized based on dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) ,transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and the mechanical property tests. The results show that the mechanical properties of the composites could be increased with improving the degree of microphase separation. At a given temperature (120°C), the degree of microphase separation is the highest for 4h and decreases gradually with prolonging treatment time. For a given time (4h), the well microphase-separated morphology is obtained and the degree of microphase mixing is increased at 120°C and 140°C treatments, respectively. The degree of microphase separation of the composites decreases with enhancing the temperature to 140°C.

nclusion complex of cholesterol:β-cyclodextrin (CβIC) was characterized for thermal analysis by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The difference of endothermic peak between inclusion compounds of cholesterol:β-cyclodextrin (CβIC) with pure cholesterol and β-cyclodextrin endothermic peaks confirmed the formation of inclusion complex. SEM results showed that of cholesterol:β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex (CβIC) observed in the form of irregular crystalline particles which has different morphology from CHO and βCD. The results obtained from this study will able to give valuable information about cholesterol-reduced egg yolk properties that could be useful to produce healthy-egg yolk based products.

The aim of the presented research was to obtain reconstituted atelocollagen fibers after extraction from poultry cartilage using the pepsin-acidic method in order to remove telopeptides from the tropocollagen. Firstly, we examined the extraction of collagen from the cartilage extracellular matrix (ECM) after proteoglycans (PG) had been removed by the action of salts, i.e., NaCl or chaotropic MgCl2. Additionally, the effects of the salt type used for PG and hyaluronic acid removal on the properties of self-assembled fibers in solutions at pH 7.4 and freeze-dried matrices were investigated. The basic features of the obtained fibers were characterized, including thermal properties using scanning calorimetry, rheological properties using dynamic oscillatory rheometry, and the structure by scanning electron microscopy. The fibers obtained after PG removal with both analyzed types of salts had similar thermal denaturation characteristics. However, the fibers after PG removal with NaCl, in contrast to those obtained after MgCl2 treatment, showed different rheological properties during gelatinization and smaller diameter size. Moreover, the degree of fibrillogenesis of collagens after NaCl treatment was complete compared to that with MgCl2, which was only partial (70%). The structures of fibers after lyophilization were fundamentally different. The matrices obtained after NaCl pretreatment form regular scaffolds in contrast to the thin, surface structures of the cartilage matrix after proteoglycans removal using MgCl2.

Ludwigite ore is a typical low-grade boron ore accounting for 58.5% boron resource of China, which is mainly composed of magnetite, lizardite and szaibelyite. During soda-ash roasting of ludwigite ore, the presence of lizardite hinders the selective activation of boron. In this work, lizardite and szaibelyite were prepared and their soda-ash roasting behaviors were investigated using thermogravimetric-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS) analyses, in order to shed light on the soda-ash activation of boron within ludwigite ore. Thermodynamics of Na2CO3-MgSiO3-Mg2SiO4-Mg2B2O5 via FactSage show that the formation of Na2MgSiO4 was preferential for the reaction between Na2CO3 and MgSiO3/Mg2SiO4. While, regarding the reaction between Na2CO3 and Mg2B2O5, the formation of NaBO2 was foremost. Raising temperature was beneficial for the soda-ash roasting of lizardite and szaibelyite. At a temperature lower than the melting of sodium carbonate (851 °C), the soda-ash roasting of szaibelyite was faster than that of lizardite. Moreover, the melting of sodium carbonate accelerated the reaction between lizardite with sodium carbonate.

The super-tough bio-based nylon was prepared by melt extrusion. In order to improve the compatibility between bio-based nylon and elastomer, the elastomer POE was grafted with maleic anhydride. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) were used to study the compatibility and micro-distribution between super-tough bio-based nylon and toughened elastomers. The results of mechanical strength experiments show that the 20% content of POE-g-MAH has the best toughening effect. After toughening, the toughness of the super-tough nylon was significantly improved. The notched impact strength was 88 kJ/m2 increasing by 1700%, which was in line with the industrial super-tough nylon. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) were used to study the crystallization behavior of bio-based PA56, and the effect of bio-based PA56 with high crystallinity on mechanical properties was analyzed from the microstructure.
