Effects of cinnamaldehyde, eugenol, and capsicum on fermentation of a corn-based dairy ration in continuous culture

A 12-unit continuous culture system was used in a complete randomized design to study the effects of no oil (CON), cinnamaldehyde oil (CIN), eugenol oil (EUG), and capsicum oil (CAP) (500 mg L-1 d -1) with a 45:55 forage:concentrate ratio (dry matter basis) ration on rumen fermentation. Dry matter digestibility did not differ among treatments. Organic matter digestibility tended to decrease with CIN. Digestibility of neutral detergent and acid detergent fiber tended to be highest with CAP. Crude protein digestibility and bacterial nitrogen flow was depressed with CIN and EUG. CIN tended to decrease microbial protein synthesis and increase effluent ammonia nitrogen. Total volatile fatty acid production did not differ among treatments; however, isovalerate production tended to be highest with CAP. CIN and EUG had higher mean pH, spent fewer hours per day and had smaller area under the curve at pH < 5.6 and 5.8. CAP had smaller area under the curve at pH < 5.6. Supplementation with these oils at the current dose had limited effects on rumen fermentation, with the majority of effects observed being mainly attributable to the very high dosage of oil used. Abstract The aim of this study was to examine the use of Gizzard Contents Extracts (GCE) and Duodenum Contents Extracts (DCE) of Chicken on In Vitro digestibility measurements of Turi Leaves (Sesbania grandiflora). The study was designed using a One-way Classification of Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 4 treatments. Each treatment was repeated three times. Types of treatment in the form of using GCE and DCE, including: (1) control treatments (without GCE or DCE), (2) GCE, (3) DCE, and (4) a mixture of GCE and DCE. The observed variables were Coefficient of Dry Matter Digestibility (CDMD), Coefficient of Organic Matter Digestibility (COMD), and Coefficient of Soluble Protein Digestibility (CSPD). The results showed that the addition of GCE, DCE, and a mixture of GCE and DCE could not increase the CDMD, COMD, and CSPD of Turi Leaves compared to the control treatment. Penelitian dirancang menggunakan Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL) pola searah dengan 4 perlakuan. Masing-masing perlakuan diulang tiga kali. Macam perlakuan berupa penggunaan penggunaan CEIZ dan CEID ayam, meliputi perlakuan kontrol (tanpa CEIZ maupun CEID), CEIZ, CEID, dan campuran CEIZ dan CEID. Variabel pengamatan berupa koefisien cerna bahan kering (KCBK), koefisien cerna bahan organic (KCBO), dan koefisien cerna protein terlarut (KCPT). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa perlakuan penambahan cairan ekstrak isi gizzard, duodenum dan campuran keduanya tidak dapat meningkatkan KCBK, KCBO, dan KCPT daun turi dibandingkan dengan perlakuan control. Abstract The objective was to evaluate digestibility and sorting behaviour of grass hay processed to differing severities. Thirty-six wether lambs were used in a completely randomized design and fed diets consisting of grass hay (82.2 %), whole barley (15.7 %), and a mineral-vitamin supplement (2.1 %). Treatments included: unprocessed hay (CON); shredded hay (SHRED); chopped hay (CHOP); and ground hay (GRIND). Lambs were fed their respective diet for 20 d followed by 4 d for measurement of feed intake and fecal output. Lambs fed CON (1.23 kg and 3.24 %) had greater DMI (P = 0.04 and 0.05) compared to CHOP (1.04 kg and 2.71 % BW), with SHRED (1.17 kg and 3.11 % BW) and GRIND (1.13 kg and 2.97 % BW) being intermediate. Undigestible NDF intake tended to decrease as processing severity increased (P = 0.05). Dry matter digestibility (67.6, 66.2, 59.6, and 60.8 % for CON, SHRED, CHOP, and GRIND, respectively; P &lt; 0.01) generally decreased as the severity of forage processing increased. Crude protein digestibility was greatest in CON (68.6 %) compared to SHRED (60.83 %), CHOP (58.7 %), and GRIND (58.5 %; P &lt; 0.01). ADF and aNDFom digestibilities were greater for CON (57.4 and 67.2 %) and SHRED (60.0 and 67.9 %) compared to CHOP (44.8 and 54.6 %) and GRIND (48.3 and 58.5 %; P &lt; 0.001). CON and SHRED lambs sorted for larger particle sizes (particles &gt; 19 mm and 8 to 19 mm; P &lt; 0.001 and 0.025, respectively) while CHOP and GRIND lambs sorted for smaller particles (particles 4 to 8 mm and particles &lt; 4 mm; P &lt; 0.001 and 0.003, respectively). These results indicate that processing of grass hay does not increase nutrient digestibility partly because of the sorting behaviour of lambs.

Protein source feed is the feed that has the biggest share in the nutritional needs of livestock. Lamtoro or Leucaena leucocephala is one of the leaf flours that can be used as an alternative feed ingredient for poultry in the tropics. With its abundant availability and does not compete for its needs with humans and has no selling value so that it can minimize consumption costs for poultry. This study aims to determine the effect of fluid from the digestive tract of chickens on the in vitro digestibility measurement of lamtoro leaves. The study used a completely randomized design (CRD) with a unidirectional pattern with 4 treatments and 3 replications. The treatments consisted of P0 = control, P1 = gizzard fluid, P2 = duodenal fluid and P3 = a mixture of gizzard and duodenal fluid. The results of this study show the average Dry Matter Digestibility Coefficient (%) for the treatment P0, P1, P2 and P3 respectively; 19.276, 29.089, 20.515 and 28.737. Organic Matter Digestibility Coefficient ; 27.702, 36.313, 24.795 and 35.649. Dissolved Protein Digestibility Coefficient ; 39.777, 53.288, 21.145 and 48.737. The results of the statistical test that the administration of lamtoro leaves showed a significant difference (P<0.05) on the digestibility coefficient of dry matter, organic matter and dissolved protein. The conclusion is that the use of gizzard liquid is more effective in increasing the in vitro digestibility of lamtoro leaves.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of regrowth age (RA) and cutting time (CT) of elephant grass (Cenchrus purpureus cv. Cameroon) on the fermentation profile, microorganism population, and nutritive value of the silage in two simultaneous trials at different sites. A 2 × 2 factorial scheme with two CTs (08:00 and 14:00) and two RAs (8 and 16 weeks) at ensilage was used in a completely randomized design, with four replicates in each trial, totaling 16 experimental units per trial. Results showed that ammonia nitrogen to total nitrogen content (N-NH3/TN) ranged from 71.8 (14:00; 16 weeks) to 137.0 g kg -1 (14:00; 8 weeks). Elephant grass silage harvested at 14:00 at 8 weeks had the lowest pH (3.53) and highest lactic acid content (39.7 g kg-1 dry matter). The in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) was higher (P < 0.05) in the silage of plants harvested at 8 weeks than in the silage harvested at 16 weeks (59.9 vs. 46.8%, respectively). In trial 2, elephant grass silage harvested at 14:00 had lower pH and acetic acid content. The IVDMD was higher in elephant grass silage harvested at 14:00, with values of 65.3% and 56.2% at 8 and 16 weeks, respectively. We recommend elephant grass harvested at 8 weeks of regrowth and cut at 14:00 to produce silage with better nutritive value and fermentative profile.

Over the productive cycle, the performance of cattle in grazing systems may be compromised, and feed supplementation is a strategy to establish nutritional balance and maximise the performance of grazing animals. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different supplementation frequencies (i.e. daily supplementation (DS) versus Monday, Wednesday and Friday (MWF)) with different forms of soybean oil (i.e. soybean grain (SG), soybean oil (SO) and rumen-protected fat (RPF)) on the nutrient digestion and rumen fermentation of heifers grazing Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu pastures. Twelve crossbred heifers (1/4 Nellore × 1/4 Santa Gertrudis × 1/2 Braunvieh) with an initial bodyweight of 236.3 ± 27.6 kg were distributed in a completely randomised design with a factorial arrangement 3 × 2 (three diets and two supplementation frequencies). There was no interaction among the SO form or supplementation frequency on dry matter intake and dry matter digestibility (P > 0.05). The animals supplemented with SG exhibited lower nitrogen intake and absorption compared with animals that were fed SO (P < 0.05). The efficiency of microbial synthesis was not influenced by the diet or supplementation frequency (P > 0.05). Forms of SO affected the rumen pH; animals fed SO showed pH values similar to those of animals receiving SG but lower values than animals fed RPF (P < 0.05). Animals supplemented with DS exhibited higher levels of rumen ammonia nitrogen relative to those supplemented MWF. The reduction of supplementation frequency (from DS to MWF k) in our experimental conditions can be used to increase the efficiency of pasture utilisation without effects in fermentation activity of the rumen microbial population. Supplementation with SO is a strategy to increase propionic acid concentration and reduce A : P ratio, which is an indicator of improvement of the efficiency of the ruminal energy utilisation.

A 61-day experiment was conducted to assess the effect of feeding Palm Kernal Meal (PKM) as a substitute for maize and cottonseed cake (CSC) in the concentrate for fattening Yankasa rams. PKM replaced CSC wholly and maize at 0.33, 66 and 100% levels to give treatment 1, 2, 3, and 4 respectively in a completely randomized design. The concentrates contained 0, 51, 52, 73, 26 and 95.25% PKM respectively.  Average daily gains (119-136g/d), dry matter intake (855-897g/day), feed efficiency (6.59-7.19) dry matter digestibility (70.56-77.23%) were not significantly affected by the treatments. However, crude protein digestibility (69.39-76.32%) was significantly (P < 0.01) affected by the treatment, with treatment 4 giving the highest value and treatment 1 the lowest. It was also observed that feed cost per gain (#30.59-#72.91/kg) declined significantly (P < 0.01) with increase in the levels of PKM. Based on the performance of the animals, it can be concluded that PKM can be used as both protein and energy sources for fattening Yankasa rams.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of replacing Tifton 85 hay with maniçoba hay in diets based on spineless cactus on the nutrient intake and digestibility, ingestive behaviour and ruminal parameters of confined sheep. In order to do this, eight male sheep with ruminal cannulae were used, distributed across four levels (0, 333, 666 and 1.000 g kg-1 of dry matter) of replacement of Tifton 85 hay with maniçoba hay in a double Latin square experimental design. The animals were confined for 60 days divided into four periods of 15 days. The replacement of Tifton 85 hay with maniçoba hay did not influence the dry matter intake or digestibility. However, it influenced in a positive linear fashion the intake of non-fibrous carbohydrates and in a linear negative fashion the digestibility of insoluble fibre in neutral detergent and crude protein. The ruminal ammonia-nitrogen and the crude protein ruminal content decreased linearly with the replacement of Tifton 85 hay with maniçoba hay. There was no effect of hay replacement on the production of volatile fatty acids or the microbial biofilm. The total replacement Tifton 85 by maniçoba hay in spineless cactus diets for sheep did not influence total digestible nutrient intake, volatile fatty acid production or biofilm, but did affect crude protein digestibility, ammonia-nitrogen and crude protein content in the rumen. Therefore, maniçoba hay can replace 300 g kg-1 grass hay in spineless cactus diets for sheep without compromising intake and ruminal parameters.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of irrigation and nitrogen fertilization on the bromatological quality, forage production, and botanical and structural composition of Tifton 85 (Cynodon sp.) pastures overseeded with black oat (Avena strigosa). Four treatments were evaluated in a 2 × 2 factorial scheme (irrigated and non-irrigated × fertilized and non-fertilized), with three replicates, in a completely randomized design. In irrigated paddocks, the irrigation system was activated when the soil matric potential reached a value equal to, or higher than, 10 kPa and 135 kg N ha-1 was applied to fertilized paddocks, divided into four applications. The forage mass pre- and post-grazing, total forage production, and the botanical, structural, and bromatological composition of the pastures were evaluated. No interaction was observed between the irrigation and nitrogen fertilization factors for any of the variables and no significant differences were observed in forage mass between pre- and post-grazing or in Tifton leaf and stem percentages. Nitrogen fertilization had a significant effect on forage production, which was 2626.41 kg dry matter (DM) ha-1 higher in fertilized pastures than in unfertilized pastures. In addition, fertilization resulted in a lower percentage of dead material (6.66%), higher percentage of oat leaves (30.84%), higher leaf:stem ratio (1:45), higher crude protein content (24.13%), lower levels of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) (64.57%) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) (32.86%), and higher in vitro dry matter digestibility (73.01%) than in unfertilized pastures. The use of irrigation did not influence total forage production, however, it resulted in pastures with lower NDF (65.97%) and ADF (33.54%), and higher in vitro dry matter digestibility (73.48%) than unirrigated pastures. Nitrogen fertilization produced improvements in pasture structure, associated with higher dry matter yield and bromatological quality, while irrigation only produced pastures with lower fiber content and greater digestibility.

A concise and factual abstract This study aims to find out the influence of the use of banana peels in pellet rations to improve the performance of local male rabbits (Lepus nigricollis). The study used 20 local male rabbits that were maintained from 5 to 12 weeks old. The study used Randomized Group Design with 4 treatments and 5 repeats. The treatments in this study are: Rabbit feed that did not contain banana peels (R0), Rabbit feed that contained 5% banana peels (R1), Rabbit feed that contained 10% banana peel (R2), and Rabbit feed that contained 15% banana peel (R3). The results showed no noticeable difference (P>0.05) in the treatment of rations against the ingenuity of dry matter digestibility, energy digestibility, protein digestibility, protein consumption, consumption of dry materials, and Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR). Rabbits who get R1 ration treatment produce the final weight and the weight gain was significantly different (P<0.05) to R0 and R3 treatment, and not significantly different (P>0.05) on R2 treatment. R1 ration consumption is the highest (P<0.05) compared to R0, R2, and R3 treatments. The effect of ration treatment on carcass variables shows results significantly different (P<0.05).

The present report describes an in vitro continuous culture system to simulate rumen fermentation. The complete assembly consists of six culture vessels (liquid volume 700 ml) fed twice daily with finely ground feed. The artificial saliva enters the vessel continuously, and the effluent leaves it continuously through the overflow port. The intermittent stirring of the fermentor content and the pH regulation are automatically controlled by a desktop computer. Two replicate experiments with ten fermentors given a diet of silage (50 %) and barley (50 %) were made in order to evaluate the system. The results indicate that the system reaches steady-state conditions within three to five days, ammonia concentration being an exeption. It takes for the ammonia concentration approximately 11—14 days to stabilize. The plateau values for the total volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentrations, the molar proportions of individual VFAs, and the ammonia concentrations were found to be within the accepted range in the rumen of animals given similar diets or in other artificial rumen systems. There was a tenfold decrease in the numbers of protozoa in the fermentors during the first four days of incubation. However, the average plateau value for the protozoa numbers (2.5 x 104/ml) is in the same range as in the dual flow continuous culture systems. The efficiency of the microbial N production was higher than that usually observed in vivo or in vitro (45 vs. 30 g/kg organic matter digested). The results indicate that this continuous culture system provides a reasonable estimate of rumen fermentation.
