In Quebec, the recommended fertilizer requirements have been lowered since 1994. A study was undertaken from 1998 to 2005 in a 4-yr rotation of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] and grain corn (Zea mays L.) to verify the mid-term mineral fertilizer requirements (N, P, K) for these field crops. Four levels of nitrogen (N) and three levels of phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) were compared on a clay soil of the Saint-Lawrence Lowlands. Nitrogen requirements based on this study corresponded to the recommended levels of each field crop tested. Recommended phosphorus rates did not maintain initial PM-III soil level (1998). However, crop yields were not affected by this decrease in soil PM-III level. To improve fertilizer recommendation tables, it should be relevant to determine with more accuracy the critical phosphorus and potassium values for field crops on other typical Quebec soils.

Animal manure may be a valuable resource for the development of agricultural sustainability. We proposed to verify the feasibility of applications of three types of animal manures to improve soil attributes and to sustain crop yields under intensive cropping and no-tillage systems. The field experiment was established in 2004 on Typic Hapludalf soil with pig slurry (PS), cattle slurry (CS), pig deep-litter (PL), mineral fertilizer (MF) and a non-fertilized treatment. From 2004 to 2015, were grown black oat, maize, forage turnip, black beans, and wheat. Soil samples were taken after winter 2014 and summer 2015, and submitted to chemical, physical, microbiological and biochemical analyses. Animal manures increased soil pH, but MF caused acidification of soil. The PL and CS applications reduced soil density, and increased total pore volume and hydraulic conductivity. Animal manures increased soil P fractions, total organic carbon, total nitrogen, stimulated soil respiration, and had higher activities of glucosidase and acid phosphatase. Wheat had its biggest dry matter and grain yields with MF, but maize grain yields with CS were higher than MF. All indicators pointed that application of animal manure converges to an interesting strategy to recycle nutrients at farmyard level and to contribute to global sustainability.

Some crop species could be used inside a cropping system as part of a strategy to increase soil P availability due to their capacity to recycle P and shift the equilibrium between soil P fractions to benefit the main crop. The release of P by crop residue decomposition, and mobilization and uptake of otherwise recalcitrant P are important mechanisms capable of increasing P availability and crop yields.

The productivity of agricultural crops is the most variable and integral indicator of their vital activity, which accumulates their genetic potential, soil fertility, weather conditions and components of agricultural technology. Soybean under optimal growing conditions (the reaction of the soil is close to neutral, sufficient phosphorus and potassium nutrition, the use of nitraginization) assimilates from the air about 70 % of the total nitrogen requirement. Therefore, it is believed that it is enough to apply only a starting dose of nitrogen fertilizers (20–40 kg/ha a. s.), to get a high yield with good indicators of grain quality. The results of studies of the influence of long-term (8 years) application of different doses and ratios of fertilizers in field crop rotation on podzolized chernozem in the conditions of the Right -Bank Forest-Steppe of Ukraine on the yield and quality of soybean seeds preceded by spring barley were presented. It was found that crop yields could be increased by 18–77 % owing to different doses, ratios and types of fertilizers. The highest indicators of seed yields for three years of the research (3,02 t/ha) were obtained under the application of mineral fertilizers at a dose of N110P60K80 per 1 ha of crop rotation area, including under soybean – N60P60K60. Exclusion of the nitrogen component from the complete fertilizer (N60P60K60) reduced its yield by 26 %, phosphorus – by 17, and potassium by 11 %. There was no significant decrease in soybean yield in the variant of the experiment with a decrease in the proportion of potassium in the composition of complete mineral fertilizer (N60P60K30) for three years of study. The largest mass of 1000 soybean seeds was formed at doses of N60К60 fertilizers, and their protein content — under the application of complete mineral fertilizer in doses of N60P60K60 and N60P60K30.

Global concerns for the sustainability of agriculture have emphasized the need to reduce the use of mineral fertilizer. Although phosphorus (P) is accumulated in farmland soils due to the long-term application of fertilizer, most soil P is not readily available to plants. The chemical speciation of P in soils, which comprise heterogeneous microenvironments, cannot be evaluated with a high degree of specificity using only macroscopic analyses. In this study, we investigated the distribution and speciation of P accumulated in soils by using both macro- and microscopic techniques including chemical extraction, solution and solid-state 31P NMR, bulk- and micro- P K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES), and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). Soil samples were collected from a field in which cabbage was cultivated under three amendment treatments: i) mineral fertilizer (NPK), ii) mineral fertilizer and compost (NPK + compost), and iii) mineral fertilizer plus compost but without nitrogen fertilizer (PK + compost). Macro-scale analyses suggested that accumulated P was predominantly inorganic P and associated with Al-bearing minerals. The repeated application of compost to the soils increased the proportion of P associated with Ca which accounted for 17% in the NPK + compost plot and 40% in the PK + compost plot. At the microscale, hot spots of P were heterogeneously distributed, and P was associated with Fe and Ca in hot spots of the NPK + compost (pH 6) and PK + compost (pH 7) treated samples, respectively. Our results indicate that application of compost contributed to creating diverse microenvironments hosting P in these soils.

The aim of the study was to examine the effect of livestock production on the economic efficiency of investments in irrigation projects. The study was based on a model focused on field crop/livestock production using the data of crop yields in field crop production with or without irrigation, financial results of cattle fattening and milk production and the input and output price relationship. The influence of livestock production on the economic effects of irrigation system utilization was evaluated using the indices of economic efficiency of investments - internal rate of return, net present value and pay-back period. The data on the amount of investments required for the construction of the irrigation system, economic benefit achieved by optimizing production under both irrigated and non-irrigated conditions, with and without livestock production were used to determine these indices.

Organic fertilization in no-tillage system (NTS) has been used in regions milk production, in an order to provide nutrients for crops and provide a destination for high production of animal waste. The aim of this study was to evaluate the chemical attributes of an Oxisol, a function of organic fertilization with liquid manure from dairy cattle (LMDC) and mineral fertilizers. The experiment was conducted under NTS with crop rotation including legumes and grasses. The treatments were distributed in three randomized blocks with factorial arrangement, using three levels of mineral fertilizer (0, 50 and 100 % of the dose recommended for the crops) and four levels of organic fertilizer (0, 30, 60 and 90 m3 ha-1year-1). After six years of fertilizer management of crops, soil was collected from five depths (0-0.05, 0.05-0.10, 0.10-0.30, 0.30-0.50 e 0.50-0.80 m). The samples were determined the chemical pH, H++Al3+, Al3+, Ca2+, Mg2+, K+,electrical conductivity (EC), bases saturation (V), Ca2+/Mg2+ ratio, total organic C (TOC), B, Cl, Fe, Cu, Zn and Mn. The mineral fertilizers acidify the soil, raised the K+, P and EC and, changed the Zn and Cu contents. The organic fertilization with LMDC was a source of nutrients (Ca 2+, Mg2+, K+, P, Zn and Cu), raised the TOC and the EC, and kept the soil acidity attributes (pH, H++ Al3+ and V).

Seed production of field crops plays a key role in ensuring food security of the country and is a continuation of the selection process, a necessary link for the development and maintenance of the variety. In seed production, the main object is a variety that is genetically close to each other a certain group of plants, homogeneous in morphological and biological properties. The finish of high-quality seed production is seeds with good varietal and sowing qualities. The main condition for effective production of field crops is a well-established seed production system, which is a set of functionally interconnected structures engaged in the production of elite and reproductive seeds. Seed production of field crops solves two main tasks: variety exchange and variety renewal. When a variety is changed, one zoned variety is replaced by another with more valuable economic characteristics. During variety renewal, varietal seeds in farms are replaced with seeds of the same varieties, but of higher reproductions. Usually, seeds for cereals and legumes are updated every 3-4 years, for millet - every 2 years, for sunflower - annually. The main goal of seed production of field crops is to maintain a set of characteristics of the variety, its most valuable qualities and economic indicators.

On a clay soil at Winnipeg, Manitoba, at the University of Manitoba, four cropping sequences, namely: 1) fallow wheat; 2) fallow, wheat, wheat; 3) fallow, wheat, wheat, wheat; 4) wheat continuous have been under study since 1919. During the years 1956, 1957 and 1958 a detailed study of the relationship of wheat yields on these sequences to moisture consumption, nitrate accumulation, moisture storage and fertilizer use was undertaken. In general, yields were higher on fallowed than on non-fallowed plots. The higher yields on fallowed plots were, in part, related to nitrate accumulation during the fallow year. The yield differential between fallowed and non-fallowed plots was reduced by mineral fertilizer and manure treatments. Where no fertilizer was used the greatest wheat production in bushels per acre per year was on the fallow-wheat-wheat sequence. When fertilized or manured, the greatest production occurred on the wheat continuous plots.Rapid accumulation of moisture took place between harvest and the following spring. As a result, during years 1956, 1957 and 1958, there was only an average of 0.7 inches more available moisture to a 4-foot depth on fallow plots at seeding time than on plots which had been cropped the previous year.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this research was to evaluate the response of wheat plants to the application of possible elicitor compounds against Bipolaris sorokiniana pathogen. This response was measured through the quantification of antioxidant enzymes, malondialdehyde and flavonoids, evaluation of the severity of brown spot disease and productivity in wheat, greenhouse and field crops. The treatments consisted of suspensions of endophytic fungi Aspergillus japonicus and Trichoderma tomentosum, salicylic acid, acibenzolar-S-methyl and fungicide. In the field trials, in 2015 and 2016, the development of the disease was lower and productivity was higher in all treatments, with emphasis on the fungicide. However, endophytic fungi suspensions demonstrated potential as growth promoters, disease severity reducers and protective antioxidant response activators, as they promoted significant increase in superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione and flavonoid enzymes.
