Effect of Low-Frequency Vibration on Human Body in Standing Position Exposed to Railway Vehicle

In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of the human body were investigated by developing a 3-D finite element model based on 50th percentile anthropometric data for a 54 kg Indian male subject in standing position by considering human body segments as an ellipsoid. The finite element modal analysis is carried out to extract several low-frequency vibration modes and its vibration mode shapes were presented in this paper. The results show that the lowest natural frequency of the standing passenger model occurs in the fore-and-aft direction. The second natural frequency occurs in the lateral direction and the first order natural frequency of the standing passenger model in the vertical direction occurs at 5.379 Hz. The model will be helpful to predict the vibration response of human body under various vibration environment encounters in the railway vehicle.

In this study, a numerical approach is established to design a beam coupled to a Voice Coil Motor (VCM) with the aim to maximize the displacement in the inductive transducer. A finite element model is developed to simulate a VCM with different beams applying a harmonic analysis. The VCM is extracted from a recycled hard disk drive (HDD) and a parametric modal analysis is performed to identify the material parameters of the HDD and the beam. These parameters are obtained comparing the real vibration modes and natural frequencies (VCM-beam) with those determined from the finite element model. A numerical-experimental case study is carried out to demonstrate that if a beam is designed for a specific low frequency vibration between 0 and [Formula: see text], the displacements are maximized in the VCM. For this purpose, real acceleration measurements taken from three individuals are used to provide the vibration signals in the numerical model. A beam is designed for one of the individuals using the natural frequency values determined from the measured signals. Results show that the displacements are maximized in the model which coincides with the natural frequency of the chosen individual. The main purpose of this research is to establish a design tool for energy harvesting purposes with VCM based on low frequency vibration sources as for example gait motions.

In this study, the effect of crack on free vibration of a large deflected cantilever plate, which forms the case of a pre-stressed curved plate, is investigated. A distributed load is applied at the free edge of a thin cantilever plate. Then, the loading edge of the deflected plate is fixed to obtain a pre-stressed curved plate. The large deflection equation provides the non - linear deflection curve of the large deflected flexible plate. The thin curved plate is modeled by using the finite element method with a four-node quadrilateral element. Three different aspect ratios are used to examine the effect of crack. The effect of crack and its location on the natural frequency parameter is given in tables and graphs. Also, the natural frequency parameters of the present model are compared with the finite element software results to verify the reliability and validity of the present model. This study shows that the different mode shapes are occurred due to the change of load parameter, and these different mode shapes cause a change in the effect of crack.

Delamination is definitely an important topic in the area of composite structures as it progressively worsens the mechanical performance of fiber-reinforced polymer composite structures in its service period. The detection and severity analysis of delaminations in engineering areas like the aviation industry is vital for safety and economic considerations. The existence of delaminations varies the vibration characteristics such as natural frequencies, mode shapes, etc. of composites and hence this indication can be effectively used for locating and quantifying the delaminations. The changes in vibration characteristics are considered as inputs for the inverse problem to determine the location and size of delaminations. In this paper Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is used for delamination evaluationof glass fiber-reinforced composite beams using natural frequency as typical vibration parameter. The Finite Element Analysis is used for generating the required dataset for ANN. The frequency-based delamination prediction technique is validated by finite element models and experimental modal analysis. The results indicate that the ANN-based back propagation algorithm can predict the location and size of delaminations in composites with good accuracy for numerical natural frequency data but the accuracy is comparitivelyless for experimental natural frequency data.

Abstract Damage reduces the flexural stiffness of a structure, thereby altering its dynamic response, specifically the natural frequency, damping values, and the mode shapes associated with each natural frequency. Considerable effort has been put into obtaining a correlation between the changes in these parameters and the location and amount of the damage in beam structures. Most numerical research employed elements with reduced beam dimensions or material properties such as modulus of elasticity to simulate damage in the beam. This approach to damage simulation neglects the non-linear effect that a crack has on the different modes of vibration and their corresponding natural frequencies. In this paper, finite element modeling techniques are utilized to directly represent an embedded crack. The results of the dynamic analysis are then compared to the results of the dynamic analysis of the reduced modulus finite element model. Different modal parameters including both mode shape displacement and mode shape curvature are investigated to determine the most sensitive indicator of damage and its location.

The TUBSAT-LAPAN micro satellite is planned to be launched using PSLV rocket. The design constraints of the mechanical system of the satellite are able to accomodate structural requirment for PSLV, which are first resonance frequency in the rocket longitudinal axis 90 Hz and first resonance frequency in the lateral axis 45 Hz. Therefore, the structural dynamic characteristic data of the satellite is important to be evaluated, such as natural frequency and mode shapes of the satellite structures, The normal modes analysis made is done usingh Finite Element Methods commercial software NASTRAN. To simplify the FEM modeling the satellite components inside the compartmens is replaced by a dummy load simulating their contribution to satellite mass, centerof gravity and inertia, which was made by the same material as the satellite's structure, i.e. Al-Alloy 2024T351. Meanwhile, the FEM modeling for both the UHF antena used the Stainless Steel materials as the real antena. The analysis results show that the lowest local natural frequency of the satellite occurs on the UHF antena. The first natural frequency of the antena structures in lateral direction is 52,29 Hz. The first natural frequency of the satellite in lateral direction 151.47 Hz completing the satellite integration, vibration test was done to the satellite. The test shows that the first global frequency is 72-75 Hz in the lateral direction and 148 Hz in longitudinal direction. Structural dynamic characteristic of TUBSAT_LAPAN micro satellite in free flying condition are also analyzed using no-constraint condition to check the safe separation clearance scenario. The results show that the first natural frequencies for satellite structures (combination) become very small, less than 0.00032 Hz. But, the lowest of the first natural frequency for UHF antena structures is almost constant, 52.30 Hz in lateral direction.

In this article, three small wind turbine blades of different materials were manufactured. Finite element analysis was carried out using finite element software ANSYS 14.5 on modeled blades of National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics 4412 airfoil profile. From finite element analysis, first, two flap-wise natural frequencies and mode shapes of three different blades are obtained. Experimental vibration analysis of manufactured blades was carried out using fast Fourier transform analyzer to find the first two flap-wise natural frequencies. Finally, the results obtained from the finite element analysis and experimental test of three blades are compared. Based on vibration analysis, we found that the natural frequency of glass fiber reinforced plastic blade reinforced with aluminum sheet metal (small) strips increases compared with the remaining blades. An increase in the natural frequency indicates an increase in the stiffness of blade.

A three dimensional piezoelectric vibration energy harvester is designed to generate electricity from heartbeat vibrations. The device consists of several bimorph piezoelectric beams stacked on top of each other. These horizontal bimorph beams are connected to each other by rigid vertical beams making a fan-folded geometry. One end of the design is clamped and the other end is free. One major problem in micro-scale piezoelectric energy harvesters is their high natural frequency. The same challenge is faced in development of a compact vibration energy harvester for the low frequency heartbeat vibrations. One way to decrease the natural frequency is to increase the length of the bimorph beam. This approach is not usually practical due to size limitations. By utilizing the fan-folded geometry, the natural frequency is decreased while the size constraints are observed. The required size limit of the energy harvester is 1 cm by 1 cm by 1 cm. In this paper, the natural frequencies and mode shapes of fan-folded energy harvesters are analytically derived. The electro-mechanical coupling has been included in the model for the piezoelectric beam. The design criteria for the device are discussed.

The dynamic vibration of the gear coupling-rotor system (GCRS) caused by misalignment is an important factor of low frequency vibration and noise radiation of the naval marine. The axial misalignment of gear coupling is inevitable owing to mass eccentricity, and is unconstrained in axial direction at high-speed operation. Therefore, the dynamic model of GCRS is proposed, considering gear-coupling misalignment and contact force in this paper. The whole motion differential equation of GCRS is established based on the finite element method. Moreover, the numerical calculation method of meshing force, considering the uniform distribution load on contact surface, is presented, and the mathematical predictive time–frequency characteristics are analyzed by the Newmark stepwise integral approach. Finally, a reduced-scale application of the propulsion shaft system is utilized to validate the effectiveness of the proposed dynamic model. For the sensibility to low-frequency vibration, the natural frequencies and vibration modes of GCRS are analyzed through the processing and analysis of acceleration signal. The experimental dynamic response and main components of vibration are respectively consistent with mathematical results, which demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed dynamic model of GCRS with misalignment. Furthermore, it also shows that the proposed finite element analysis and calculation method are suitable for complex shafting, providing a novel thought for dynamic analysis of the propeller–shaft–hull coupled system of marine.

The paper investigates experimentally the effect of low-frequency vibration on nonlinear vibro-acoustic wave modulations applied to the detection of Barely Visible Impact Damage (BVID) in a composite plate. Finite Element (FE) modeling was used in a pretest stage to identify different motion scenarios of delaminated surfaces and relate them to natural frequencies of the damaged plate. In particular the opening-closing and frictional sliding actions of the defected interfaces have been considered. Subsequently, the identified frequencies have been used for low frequency excitation in nonlinear acoustic experiments on a composite plate with impact damage.
