Aluminium/graphite composites are the need of modern times for addressing the fuel saving issues. The graphite in such composites act as solid lubricant and it reduce external fuel requirements. But such composites are having degraded mechanical properties due to the graphite content in composite. In order to solve the negative effect of graphite on mechanical properties of LM13/Gr self-lubricating composite this study was conducted to find out the mechanical properties of LM13/B4C/Gr Metal Matrix Composites. Boron carbide was selected as reinforcement because of its better reinforcement properties compared to alumina and silicon carbide. The properties of the hybrid composites were compared with the LM13/Gr self-lubricating composite to study the enhancement in mechanical properties that has been caused by the boron carbide particles. Using computerized universal testing machine and rock-well hardness tester mechanical properties such as hardness and tensile strength were tested. Pin on disk testing machine was used to analyse the wear behavior. The test results indicates that by raising weight % of boron carbide particles in the LM13, tensile strength and hardness of the hybrid composites was increased compared to self-lubricating composite accompanied by better tribological properties.

In the present work Al356-Bagasse ash composites are produced by two stage stir casting method and subsequently various properties like compression strength, tensile strength, hardness of Al356 are studied. Al356 alloy is reinforced with bagasse ash particles of the various weight percentage (2,4 and 6% wt.). An experimental result shows uniform distribution of the bagasse ash particles in the matrix of the Al356 leading to increase in the mechanical strength of the composites. The tensile and compression tests are carried out with the help of Universal Testing Machine and it was observed that ultimate tensile strength, yield strength and compression strength increases with increase weight percentage of bagasse ash in the composite, while percentage elongation decreases. The hardness of the composites are measured by brinell hardness tester and it was observed that hardness of the composite material increases with increase in weight percentage of bagasse ash particles.

Mechanical properties (impact, hardness and tensile strength) characterization of samples containing homogenous mixtures of Al 6063 matrix and varying amount of silver nanoparticles mixed with calcium carbonate at 2, 4, 6% weight fractions, respectively, produced by method of stir casting were carried out. Measurement of impact energy, hardness and tensile strength of the produced samples at 24℃ (ambient) temperature was done by Charpy impact, Brinell hardness and universal tensile testing machine in accordance to ASTM E23, E384 and E8/E8M-13M, respectively. The magnitude of impact and hardness increased evidently with increase in percentage weight fraction of the AgNPs. The refined samples were examined under an optical microscope. The fracture surfaces of the impact test samples were further examined by scanning electron microscopy. There is an increase in tensile strength, elongation and modulus of elasticity of Al-AgNP composites compared to as-cast aluminium alloy. The use of stir-casting technique influences the homogeneity and microstructure of the composites positively. It is concluded that Al-silver nanocomposites possess better qualities in hardness and strength and can replace conventional aluminium alloy in terms of performance and longer life in industrial application.

MMCs can be usually fabricated by powder metallurgy, stir casting and spray co-deposition, etc. Al2O3/Al composites were produced by means of reciprocating extrusion with alumina and pure aluminum particulates in the present study. The microstructure was analyzed by scanning electronic microscope, and the mechanical properties were measured by hardness tester and universal testing machine, respectively. The results showed that Al2O3/Al composites with as high as 20 vol.% alumina can be successfully produced by reciprocating extrusion. During reciprocating extrusion process, the reinforced alumina particles can be fragmentized and uniformly distributed in the aluminum matrix. The tensile strength and hardness of the composites increase as volume fraction of alumina particles increases, whereas the elongation decreases. Compared with the pure aluminum compact, the tensile strength and hardness of the composite with 20 vol.% alumina particles is 29.3% and 93.5% higher, respectively; whereas the elongation decreases 66.6%, and the fracture mechanism of the composites is attributed to ductile rupture.

The present work focuses on the fabrication of aluminum (6061-T6) matrix composites (AMCs) reinforced with various weight percentages of SiC particulates using sand casting method. The addition of Mg in the melt during the process has improved the wettability between Al and SiC there by reduced the formation of SiO2 layer on the surface. The fabricated AMCs were characterized using optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), hardness tester and universal tensile testing machine. The OM and SEM images revealed the presence of homogeneous dispersion of SiC particle in the matrix. Using X-ray diffraction (XRD) test, the dispersion of reinforcement has been identified. With the increases in weight percentage of SiC particles in the aluminum matrix improved the mechanical properties of composites.

The pure Cu coating was plated on the surface of silicon carbide particles (SiCP) by two different methods, hydrazine hydrate direct reduction method and hydrazine with glucose pre-reduction method. The hydrazine with glucose pre-reduction method is more suitable for Cu plating on the surface of SiCP in terms of morphology and microstructure. AZ61 composites reinforced with different volume fractions (3~15%) uncoated and Cu-coated SiCP were prepared by powder metallurgy followed by hot extrusion. The effect of Cu coating on the morphology of SiCP/AZ61 composite was analyzed by optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), electronic probe micro-analyzer (EPMA) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The properties of the composite were characterized by Brinell hardness tester and mechanical testing machine. The effects of Cu coating on the micro-hardness, tensile strength and elongation of SiCP/AZ61 composite were analyzed. The tensile strength of AZ61 composite reinforced with Cu-coated SiCP increased by 3.5~6.3% and the elongation increased by 7.4~35.0% compared with AZ61 composite reinforced with uncoated SiCP. Therefore, the Cu coating can ameliorate the microstructure and properties of the SiCP/AZ61 composite effectively, reduce the defect rate in the composite, and improve the hardness, relative density, tensile strength, elongation of the composite.

In this paper, a series of welding wires with ZrB2 particles were developed by the in situ reaction, and the ZrB2 particles were successfully introduced into the spray-formed 7055 aluminum alloy welded joints by TIG welding. The microstructure, hardness, and tensile strength of the welded joints were tested by metallographic microscope, SEM, EDS, Vickers hardness tester, and tensile testing machine. The results show that the microstructure of ZrB2/7055 welded joints is fine dendrites. The hardness of the weld zone of the ZrB2/7055 welded joint is higher than that of the 7055 welded joint. With the increase of ZrB2 particles’ content, the tensile strength of welded joints increases first and then decreases. When the content of ZrB2 particles is 1.5 wt.%, the tensile strength reaches the maximum value of 280 MPa. The tensile strength of the welded joint containing 1.5 wt.% ZrB2 particles is 14% higher than that of the pure 7055 aluminum alloy welded joint.

The article contains the analysis of thermoplastics used in prototyping machine parts. We used several types of experimental samples with different filling percentages. The equipment on which the experimental studies were carried out is shown. During the experiment, a specialized tensile testing machine was used. The experimental samples were installed in the developed centering device. Normal conditions were observed during the tests. The results of an experimental tensile study of PLA-plastic specimens are presented. The typical stress-strain diagram of an experimental sample is described, which describes the dependence of stress on relative deformation. An equation of the linear dependence of the tensile strength on the percentage of filament filling has been compiled, which makes it possible to determine the tensile strength of the product at any percentage of the filling of the plastic filament. The assessment is adequately verified by Fisher's criterion. Recommendations for filament filling in prototyping machine parts are given.

This study aims to identify the effect of immersion of coconut fiber in limestone water on surface morphology and tensile strength, including chemical reactions during immersion. Coconut coir fibers were immersed in a solution of limestone water for 0, 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20 hours, with a mass fraction of limestone of 5%, then dried for 1 hour. Coconut fiber was characterized by a single fiber tensile testing machine, Scanning Electron Microscope, X-ray diffractometer, and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. The results showed that the percentage of 5% with 8 hours of immersion in the fiber had a cleaner surface morphology with a tensile strength of 234.62 MPa. Therefore, as an alternative to improving the characteristics of a single thread, immersion in limestone water needs to be applied.
