In vitro antibacterial activities of methanolic leaf and seed extracts of Moringa oleifera grown in Dodoma, Tanzania were evaluated using standard microdilution and disc diffusion methods against extended spectrum beta lactamase producing Gram negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae). Microdilution method showed no activity at concentration of 20 mg/mL for all the extracts except leaf extract which exhibited minimum inhibition at concentration of  2.5 µg/mL for E. Coli but when high concentrations of the extracts were used in the disc diffusion method then the results exhibited the highest killing susceptibility at concentration of 0.4 g/mL with zone of inhibition 31 mm for leaf extract and 26 mm for seed extract against E. coli, and 27 mm for leaf extract and 29 mm for seed extract against K. pneumonia. Additionally, when both extracts were screened qualitatively for phytoconstituents using standard methods, leaf extract confirmed the presence of carbohydrates, cardiac glycosides,  tannins and quinones, and seed extract confirmed the presence of proteins, carbohydrates, cardiac glycosides, alkaloids, terpenoids and quinones. These phytoconstituents can be new sources of future antibiotics that potentially combat the existing problem of antimicrobial resistance and thus, creating an awareness in the community regarding the usage of M. oleifera growing widely but neglected in Tanzania in spite of its nutritional values and traditional uses. An exploratory study based on laboratory experiment was carried out to determine the antibacterial effect of Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) extract of Aloe vera leaf gel (DAE) against standard strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae in the Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics in collaboration with the Department of Microbiology, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh, Bangladesh. DMSO extract was used in five different concentrations (100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 μg/ml). Dose dependent inhibitory effect was seen against the test organisms using disc diffusion method. Zone of inhibition (ZOI) were 8 mm, 13 mm, 15 mm, 16 mm and 21 mm against S. aureus; 0 mm, 8 mm, 13 mm, 15 mm and 18 mm against P. aeruginosa; 8 mm, 11 mm, 13 mm, 16 mm and 20 mm against E. coli; 0 mm, 9 mm, 12 mm, 14 mm and 18 mm against K. pneumoniae at 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 μg/ml respectively. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was assessed by broth dilution technique. The MICs of DAE for S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, E. coli and K. pneumoniae were 300 μg/ml, 400 μg/ml, 400 μg/ml and 450 μg/ml respectively. From the study it was observed that DMSO extract of Aloe vera leaf gel possesses antibacterial effect against the test pathogens. The findings highlight the need for further extensive study to detect and isolate the biologically active ingredients present in the Aloe vera leaves which are responsible for antibacterial effect. Introduction: Some strains of Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae produce Extended Spectrum Beta-Lactamases (ESBL) may be responsible for various infections such as urinary infections. These Sick people are treated in the very serious cases by association antibiotics to class to betalactamins, aminosids and quinolons. But proliferation of multi-drug resistant strains involves decreasing therapeutic success. That’s why epidemiological study must be done in all laboratories of bacteriology. Purpose: The aim of the study was to research the resistance phenotypes of our E. coli and K. pneumoniae ESBL strains compared to others families of antibiotics. Material and methods: Thirty two (32) Extended Spectrum betalactamases E. coli and K. pneumoniae strains isolated from either hospitalized patients or sick people who came for consultation were studied. Susceptibility to antimicrobial agents was determined using an antibiotic disk (Bio-Rad) diffusion method on Mueller-Hinton agar (Bio-Rad). The results were interpreted according to the Standards of the French Antibiogram Committee (CA-SFM). Results: The study showed that most of these strains were multi-drug resistant. They were resistant to many beta-lactamines antibiotics. E. coli strains were also resistant at 70,34% to aminosids, at 96,72% to quinolons, at 58,3% to cotrimoxazol, at 26,1% to chloramphénicol and at 21,4% to colistin ; about K. pneumoniae, they were resistant at 72,6% to aminosids, at 88,95% to quinolons, at 86,7% to cotrimoxazol, at 44,4% to chloramphénicol and at 25% to colistin. But all these strains were sensitive at 100% to l’imipenem.

This study was carried out to determine resistance profiles of Escherichia coli strains isolated from clinically healthy chickens in Nsukka, southeast Nigeria. A total of 324 E. coli strains isolated from cloaca swabs from 390 chickens were tested against 16 antimicrobial agents using the disc diffusion method. The antibiotics used in the study were: ampicillin (25µg), amoxycillin-clavulanic acid (30µg), gentamicin (10µg), Streptomycin (30µg). cefuroxime (20µg), cephalexin (10µg), nalidixic acid (30µg), ciprofloxacin (5µg), norfloxacin (10µg), ofloxacin (5µg), pefloxacin (5µg), tetracycline (30µg), chloramphenicol (10µg), cotrimoxazole (50µg), colistin (25µg) and nitrofurantoin (100µg).The strains demonstrated high rates of resistance (34.6%  66.1%) to ampicillin, tetracycline, nitrofurantoin, cefuroxime and cotrimoxazole. None of the isolates was resistant to colistin, ofloxacin and pefloxacin. For each antimicrobial agent (except cephalexin), strains from the intensively reared chickens (layers and broilers) displayed higher resistance frequencies than those from the local birds. A total of 49 resistant patterns were recorded for the 228 strains resistant to at least one antimicrobial drug, with AmTeCoS and AmTeCfN being the predominant patterns. Because of the great variation in the drug resistance patterns of the Escherichia coli strains, use of antimicrobial agents in the management of E. coli infections in the study area should be based on results of sensitivity tests.

Extended-spectrum β-lactamase producing E. coli and K. pneumoniae is a serious threat to the patients. These organisms are major extended spectrum beta lactamase (ESBL) producers. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of Extended spectrum β- lactamase producing strains of Escherichia coli and Klebsiella spp isolates from the urine sample of children visiting International Friendship Children Hospital. During the seven months, between June 2016 to December 2016, 1018 mid-stream urine samples(MSU) were collected from patients suspected of having UTI. The samples were investigated by conventional semi-quantitative culture technique and identification of E. coli and Klebsiella spp. was done by microscopy and biochemical test. Antibiotic susceptibility test of isolates was performed by modified Kirby Bauer Disc diffusion test. ESBL screening test was done by using 3rd generation Cephalosporin and confirmation done by combination disc diffusion method. Out of total 1018 MSU samples investigated, 200(19.64%) isolates of E. coli and 28(2.7%) isolates of Klebsiella spp. making a total of 228(22.39%) were found to cause significant bacteriuria. 76(33.33%) isolates, from those causing significant bacteriuria, were Multi-drug resistant organisms. Out of 228 isolates, 54(23.68%) were ESBL producers, that includes 51(25.5%) Escherichia coli and 3(12.5%) Klebsiella pneumoniae. ESBL producers were more common in in-patient (36.17%) than out-patient (20.44%). Most of the ESBL producers were resistance to amoxicillin, followed by Cotrimoxazole and Ciprofloxacin respectively. They were highly sensitive to Imipenem, Tigecycline, Amikacin, Piperacillin-Tazobactam, and Nitrofurantoin. High prevalence of ESBL producing E. coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae was found among children. Regular and routine monitoring of ESBL producing isolates is essential.Nepal Journal of Biotechnology. Background: A major problem in the treatment of the infectious diseases healthcare centers is extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing bacteria. Objectives: The aim of present study was to identify the antibiotic sensitivity pattern and prevalence of the blaCTX, blaTEM, and blaSHV genes in Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae strains. Methods: In this study, E. coli and K. pneumoniae specimens were collected in Shushtar hospitals, Khuzestan (southwest Iran), from March to October 2015. Sensitivity antibiotic pattern performed by disc diffusion method. Double disc synergy test (DDST) done for identifying ESBLs isolates and PCR for blaTEM, blaSHV, and blaCTX-M genes. Results: One hundred E. coli and 30 K. pneumoniae isolates were collected from different specimens. The highest rates of antibiotic resistance related to cefotaxime and aztreonam in E. coli and K. pneumoniae. ESBL-harboring K. pneumoniae and E. coli were 13.5 and 28%, respectively. Overall, bla TEM was the most prevalent ESBL gene. Conclusions: In this study, the rate of antibiotic resistance was high, and due to the carrying of coding genes on mobile genetic elements and the ability of these elements to carry genes that create resistance to other antibiotic families, identification and isolation of these isolates are essential to find effective antibiotics and eliminate the infection.

A new series of aspirin bearing alkylated amines moieties 1–12 were synthesised by reacting isothiocyanate with a series of aniline derivatives in overall yield of 16–56%. The proposed structures of all the synthesised compounds were confirmed using elemental analysis, FTIR, and 1H and  13C NMR spectroscopy. All compounds were evaluated for antibacterial activities against E. coli and S. aureus via turbidimetric kinetic and Kirby Bauer disc diffusion method. Compound 5 bearing meta -CH3 substituent showed the highest relative inhibition zone diameter against tested bacteria compared to ortho and para substituent. Furthermore, aspirin derivatives bearing shorter chains exhibited better bacterial inhibition than longer alkyl chains.

The antibacterial activities of the crude extract of Vismia baccifera var. dealbata Triana & Planch and of compounds isolated from it (sesamin, friedelin and vismiaquinone) were evaluated against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 29212), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25992), Klebsiella pneumoniae (ATCC 23357), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853) using the disc diffusion agar method. The results obtained have revealed antibacterial activity against S. aureus, E. faecalis and P. aeruginosa, pathogen opportunists that become resistant to the antibiotics frequently used. According to the literature consulted, this is the first report of the antibacterial activity of the crude extract of V. baccifera and its constituents.

Extended spectrum beta-lactmase (ESBL) producing organisms create a major problem for clinical therapeutics. The frequency of ESBL producing strains among clinical isolates has been steadily increasing over the past few years resulting in limitation of the therapeutic options. These resistant bacteria are emerging world wide as a threat to human health in both the community and hospital settings. -lactamase production by several organisms is the most important mechanism of resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics, such as penicillins and cephalosporins. This study was done to determine the susceptibility of different antimicrobials to ESBL producing Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae isolated from wound swabs, blood, urine, fluid, tracheal aspirates and sputum in Shahid Bahonar Hospital of Tehran from July, 2007 to June, 2008. A total of 115 ESBLproducing isolates were obtained from outdoor and indoor patients. Out of 115 isolates, 60% were E. coli and 40% were K. pneumoniae. All ESBL-producing isolates were confirmed using the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI)-approved double-disk diffusion method. 29.6% of these isolates were collected from medical wards and 24.3% were collected from outdoor. Urine (70.4%) was the main source of ESBL-producing isolates from all patients, followed by blood (16.5%). All isolates were susceptible to both imipenem and meropenem. Of all isolates, 93.9% were susceptible to amikacin. The cephalosporins (1-4 generations) were almost 100% resistant. For Nitrofurantoin, 57.4% were sensitive. High rate resistance (74.8%) was observed to all quinolones tested. Aztreonam, Ampicillin, Co-amoxyclav and Ampicillin/Sulbactam were 100% resistant. This study shows that the frequency of ESBL producing strains of E. coli and K. pneumoniae is high in both hospital and community levels and it has a significant implication for patients’ management. Advance drug resistance surveillance and molecular characteristics of ESBL isolates is necessary to guide the appropriate and judicious antibiotic use. Here we present the efficacies of Murraya koenigii leaves extract as natural antibacterial agents bythe ability to inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The antibacterialactivities of formulated liquid hand soap with different concentrations (10, 30 and 50 mg/mL) ofM. koenigii extracts were determined by paper disc diffusion method. M. koenigii leaves extract at10 mg/mL concentration had the ability to inhibit the growth of both test microorganisms. Whereas,for liquid hand soap formulated with 10, 30 and 50 mg/mL M. koenigii extracts, inhibition zoneswere observed on S. aureus assay plates but not on E. coli. Hence, the results suggested that liquidhand soap containing M. koenigii extract had therapeutic potentials to prevent spread of skindiseases caused by S. aureus.

Diarrhea is still one of the world’s major health problem especially in developing country. Foods and beverages contaminated by microorganism become the risk factor of diarrhea, including Escherichia coli (E. coli). One of the curative effort that can be done is to utilise the secondary metabolite compounds contained in binahong leaf (Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis). This study used true experimental method. The sample was binahong leaf extract with concentration of 25%, 50, and 75% using diffusion method (Kirby-Bauer) on doublelayered Mueller Hinton Agar (MHA) (base layer and seed layer) in order to measure the growth inhibition zone around the cylinder plate. The amount of population on this study was 24 isolations of E. coli. The repetition of each treatment group was counted by Federer formula. The result analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis test and showed that there was difference on binahong leaf extract effectiveness (p < 0,05), as well as on post hoc analysis using MannWhitney test showed that there was significant difference at concentration of 25%,50%, and 75%. (p < 0,001). This shows that there is a significant differences in the concentration of binahong leaf extract.
