ABSTRACT The paper aims at demonstrating the creative perlocutionary potential of interdiscursive production and interpretation of conceptual metaphor used in socio-political persuasion, simultaneously interpreted as mental phenomenon and discursive practice that is historically entrenched and highly ideological. The Critical Metaphor Analysis model is used to investigate the interdiscursive application of two PLAGUE metaphors (COMMUNISM IS A PLAGUE and LGBT IS A PLAGUE) as an example of deliberate transcending of genre boundaries in the increasingly intertextual and interdiscursive world of both socio-political and religious discourses. The empirical part provides a qualitative study of the historical background, structure and persuasive effects of the rainbow plague metaphor (Pol. tęczowa zaraza), publicly used by the Archbishop of Cracow, Marek Jędraszewski, in reference to the LGBT community in Poland, conducted in relation to the original text on which it draws, namely the more historically entrenched red plague (Pol. czerwona zaraza) metaphor made popular by the Polish poet Józef Szczepański in his poem composed during the Warsaw Uprising 1944.

Critical discourse analysis (CDA) is a cross-disciplinary methodological and theoretical approach. At its core CDA explores the intersections between discourse, critique, power, and ideology which hold particular values for those teaching in developing contexts. CDA has emerged as a valuable methodological approach in cultural and media studies and has increased in prominence since the 2010s in education research where it is drawn on to explore educational policy, literacy education, and identity. This research has intersected with the field of information systems which has explored the dominant discourses and discursive practice of how information and communication technologies (ICTs) are viewed in policy and the contradictions between rhetoric and reality. It has also been drawn on in research in developing contexts to critique the role of ICTs in education. A brief historical background to CDA and overview of the key components of the approach will be provided. How CDA has been drawn on in educational studies will be examined and research on CDA will be highlighted to explore discursive practices of students and the influence of students’ digital identities on their engagement with and experience of online learning. By focusing on four key constructs of CDA—namely meaning, context, identity, and power—the potential of CDA to critically investigate how students’ are constructing their technological identity in an increasingly digital world will be demonstrated, particularly as examples of research emanating from developing contexts will be drawn.

The speaker on Cokro TV's Youtube video, Ade Armando, expressed his opinion about the discourse of non-mahram which has invited controversy. The discourse of non-muhrim has sparked debate because it is associated with social problems that occur in society, namely choosing a doctor who is adjusted to the gender of the patient. This research emphasizes more on the ideology that the speaker wants to convey and the strategies used by the speaker to express his ideology. The critical analysis model used in this research is Van Leeuwen's critical analysis model. This research model is used to determine the social actors supported and marginalized by the speaker. This research uses a qualitative research approach with content analysis method. The results showed that the speakers used exclusion and inclusion strategies. The exclusion strategy used by the speaker leads to a passive discourse strategy, while the inclusion strategy used by the speaker leads to an identification discourse strategy.

The aim of the article is to present, based on theoretical studies of integration, the evolution of this process in Latin America and, most recently, in South America. Based on these studies, the goal is to analyze the role played by Brazil in the process, which defines as priorities of its foreign policy a regional and global framework for its international action that is based on both cooperation and power projection. The research has been conducted based on theories of integration, an historical background on Latin American integration and in Brazilian foreign policy, through its contemporary agenda. The answer was based on a comparative agenda and in a bibliographical critical analysis of the research material. The main findings of the paper point out that Latin American integration has specific features linked to the economic, political and stragetic realities of the continent that show the limitations of some theories applied to the European process, also that it depends on Brazilian foreign policy actions, that still sees the region as instrumental to its interests. So, Brazil sometimes fail to fulfill some requisites of integration that are essential to sustain its projects. Therefore, there is a cycle of enlargement and deepening of regional integration process in this political space that point out to the need of a more sustained compromise of Brazilian foreign policy towards these projects. If Brazil continues not to sustain these projects, they will lose momentum and significance once more, increasing power asymmetries in the region.

This study examines how the Home for Children with Disabilities and disability identities were construed by Thai undergraduates in their website project through an analysis of metaphors. Critical Metaphor Analysis (CMA) was the framework for analyzing the use of metaphors and the participants’ enactment of identity and social representation. The critical analysis revealed four dominant themes: ‘JOURNEY’, ‘FAMILY’, ‘OBJECT’ and ‘HOPE’ all utilized to reproduce the Home for Children with Disabilities identity as a ‘warm’, ‘effective’ and ‘altruistic’ organization  that provides their children with forms of care and compassion. The analysis, in addition, showed the participants’ representation of disability identity as a non-static and changeable entity. Children with disabilities were seen as ‘capable of becoming self-supporting’. Additionally, the semi-structured interviews conducted with the participants indicated that social oppression was believed to be the cause of disability-related issues and that true understanding was needed to terminate social discrimination.

The first edition of Asclepiades’s epigrams aspires to become a reliable handbook to University students and scholars alike. In the introduction (and commentary of the epigrams) emphasis was placed on the literary characteristics as well as the historical background of the poet’s productive period. The philological study and commentary, which follow the text, was based on the publication of Gow - Page. Initially, the results of older as well as modem research are examined with the aim of evaluating their reliability while at the same time helping the readers make their own assessment. At this point begins an effort to restore the original text with several of my own corrections (e.g. ep. XVII.6, XXV. 1, XXV.8, XXVI.5, XXXVI. 1-2), or with the adoption of other scholars’ corrections (e.g. ep. XXVII.4). In other cases although the authentic text is retained, several interpretative impediments are resolved with a different approach (e.g. ep. X.3, XII, XIV.3-4, XVIII, XIX, XX, XXII, XXIII, XXXII, XXXIII, XLII.1, XLIII, XLIV, XLV, XLVI). Basic criterion for the new corrections and interpretations is their efficiency and scholarly support since the aim is not to impress but to provide the best possible restoration and evaluation of Asclepiades’s poetic work saved to date. Within these limits constructive criticism is made on contemporary opinion which, in my opinion, have resulted in erroneous (e.g. ep. VII) or even contradictory theories (e.g. ep. IX, XVI) by partially examining Asclepiades’s epigrams. At the same time we examine whether the 17 “controversial” epigrams should be attributed to Asclepiades or not, and the relative conclusions have been brought forward (e.g. ep. XXXVIII - XL, XLIII - XLVI). Asclepiades’s epigrams were also co-examined mainly with works of the Ancient Greek and Latin Literature in the respect of their form and content. Many are the references to philosophical theories (see Issue Table wd. φιλοσοφία). The commentary of the epigrams refers to their form and content alike aiming at qualities as precision, conciseness and comprehensiveness. The main general conclusions are reviewed in the epilogue. The constant care to handle the ancient text with respect was the main feature at this dissertation. The purpose was, by properly evaluating Asclepiades’s poetic work, to contribute to the Literary study of his period an important part of which was Asclepiades.

The article presents a theoretical and historical overview of the studies of general and special abilities carried out in the domestic scientific psychology. The difficulties associated with the definition of the concepts of “ability” and “giftedness” are analyzed. The understanding of the nature of creativity and creativity is indicated. The psychological essence and specificity of literary activity as a scientific phenomenon are considered. The characteristic of literary and artistic abilities as an internal psychological regulator of personality is given. It is shown that the ability to literary creativity refers to the artistic type of giftedness, which has both common qualities inherent in other types of giftedness, and peculiar, distinguishing it from other types of abilities. It is concluded that most of the complexities and contradictions in the study of the phenomenology of abilities are mainly associated with the comprehension of what ontologically represents this mental phenomenon. It is shown that the psychology of literary and artistic creativity and related areas of scientific knowledge are very complex and multifaceted. It is said that the creation of conditions that ensure the identification and creative development of literary gifted persons, the realization of their potential is among the priorities of modern society. Of great importance for the development of literary abilities is the social, including educational environment.

The author has studied the problems of the reproduction of stylistics in translation. Examples of domestication in translation have been analysed on the basis of different Ukrainian translations of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, two famous novels written by Mark Twain. The first Ukrainian translators of Mark Twain’s novels in the first decade of the 20th century were Maria Zahirnia and Nastia Hrinchenko, wife and daughter of the prominent Ukrainian writer, scholar, and public activist Borys Hrinchenko. Their work was greatly influenced by the circumstances of the time (i.e., printing any translations into Ukrainian was banned in the Russian empire till 1905, no official body for the codification of the Ukrainian language existed, etc.). Later Ukrainian translations of the novel (Mytrofanov, Steshenko), together with Russian and Polish (by Chukovskii, Daruzes, Bilinski, and Tarnovski) were selected for comparative analysis with a consideration for their historical background. The linguistic and stylistic peculiarities of these translations have been studied. It is demonstrated that Zagirnya and Hrinchenko translations reproduce the original work quite exactly. Their translations have features of domestication and colloquialism, but at the same time, all important elements are fully reproduced. Their translations have a natural conversational tonality which corresponds to the original text. The later Ukrainian, Russian, and Polish translations under examination tend to keep to the norms of literary language to a greater extent. The level of domestication in these translations is lower (or even zero). Sometimes they include too-literary elements together with inadequate colloquial ones. Nevertheless, stylistically colored elements are successfully reproduced in these translations.

This article explores one aspect of the many public protests surrounding the 1996 reform of German orthography: the first in a series of legal challenges, which was brought before the Federal Constitutional Court in May 1996. The first section begins by proposing how and why such protests can be usefully theorized in terms of Blommaert's (1999) concept of a “language ideological debate,” and then describes the historical background essential for an understanding of this legal dispute. The second section focuses on a critical analysis of the case brought against the reform, looking at the details of the challenge itself, together with the justification for its rejection by the Constitutional Court. The third section considers what this dispute can tell us about debates over the perceived origin of orthographic norms, with particular reference to the ideological relationship between individual, speech community, and (nation-)state. Finally, there is a brief summary of the way in which the matter was finally – albeit unsatisfactorily – resolved in 1998–1999.

Pseudo-metascientific newspeak? On the language of the Polish science policy The aim of this paper is a critical analysis of selected means of the language used in the contemporary (2016–2018) Polish science policy. The analysis attempts to apply the categories developed by Polish researchers in the description of newspeak as the language of power and media at the time of the Polish People’s Republic (PRL). The overall discussion is based on W. Pisarek’s view that what is called newspeak and referred to the PRL period in the Polish literature is in fact one of many possible forms of using language as an instrument of political persuasion. The object of the description is mainly language behaviours of the Polish scientists who are powerful and infl uential in the world of Polish science and who co-decide on the governmental science policy. The focus is on the language of the debate on a reform of the system of science and higher education (the so-called Ustawa 2.0 (Act 2.0), Konstytucja dla Nauki (Constitution for Science), ustawa Gowina (Gowin’s Act)). NOWOMOWA PSEUDOMETANAUKOWA?… 47 The principal conclusion is that the apparatus developed in the description of the newspeak of the PRL period could be employed in the description of a large number of language behaviours of representatives of the Polish science policy of the end of the 2nd decade of the 21st c. The fl ag words of the Polish science policy are characterised by monovalent connotation combined with a vague (or no) denotation.
