The unprecedented growth in the quantity, as well as quality of publications on language teacher education supported by the domain’s increasing experiential background opens up new avenues for enhancing the effectiveness of foreign language teacher education in Ukraine. Hence, the present paper aims at analyzing and singling out recurrent research themes, defining the mainstream approaches of the field of language teacher education, which constitute the emerging theoretical foundations of the field’s knowledge base. The review of the state-of-the-art publications has enabled the specification of the following research areas, pertinent to foreign language teacher education: language teacher cognition, the knowledge base of language teachers, language teacher identity, reflection, language teacher research and action research, language teacher professionalism, the role of teacher education, effectiveness of teaching, expertise, competence, teacher development and some others. The analysis of research suggests overall proliferation of the number of studies on the problem of language teacher education during the past 30˗40 years. Nevertheless, the comparison of the volume of studies highlighting general aspects of teacher education to those specifically related to foreign/second language teacher education reveals the quantitative advantage of the former. More efforts are needed at elaborating language teacher focused issues which stem from the nature of foreign language as a discipline, the socio-cultural role of language teachers and the role of foreign language in particular. Further limitations of the field-related research base, include: 1) a rather small proportion of empirical studies, necessary to provide informed answers for important questions of language teacher education; 2) the majority of available empirical studies are small-scale and contextually limited, which excludes the possibility of generalizations; 3) the field’s overall reliance on traditions, intuition and practical experience, with little regard for theoretical foundations; 4) paucity of research that present systematic complex generalizations of the field’s knowledge base;

Abstract Traditionally, foreign language classes provide a systematic presentation and acquisition of knowledge and skills under the guidance and monitoring of a teacher. However, language is unquestionably related to culture. Being competent in a foreign language requires not only possessing the linguistic competence, but also understanding the culture that has defined and shaped it. The process of learning a foreign language involves an awareness of the culture of the target language, as well as the way it relates to one’s own culture. This paper aims, first, to deal with major issues in the foreign language classes related to creating the conditions for students to acquire and develop the skills necessary to cope with the difficulties of the intercultural situations, and second, to determine the culture-related content areas and give practical tips for teachers to employ in preparing their students for the intercultural challenge. It also points to the important role of teachers in conceiving and producing the teaching-learning resources that will enable students to gain the relevant cultural background knowledge and skills, as well as to the benefits of using culture-focused activities along with the grammar-based tasks.

This article presents the methods of teaching foreign students how to form and use Russian case forms and describes the stages of students’ learning the cases. The current study is becoming more relevant in teaching Russian as a Foreign Language (RFL) due to the richness and variety of semantic shades of the Russian case system and variants of case endings as well as to the increase in the number of foreign students and the role of case forms in speech. The knowledge of normative forms of education and the use of Russian case forms is of great importance in communication and presents a great difficulty. When mastering the grammatical category of the case, the linguistic, speech and communicative competences are formed. The linguistic competence is important, since its formation determines the further successful mastering of the Russian case and declension system. The formation of these competences includes three main stages, and at each stage it is important to use the most optimal and effective forms of work. Also important is the sequence of studying case forms, which differs from the traditional linear, familiar to us. In the methodology of teaching RFL, it is common to rely on the communicative principle according to which mastering the cases depends primarily on the frequency of use and functional significance of case forms.

The main goal of teaching foreign language is the formation of foreign language communicative competence which implies the development of speech skills. In the methods there are different approaches to teaching foreign language, one of which is the lexical approach. Undoubtedly, the lexical approach involves focus on learning the vocabulary of the language. However, there are different points of view on which methods and forms of work are the most effective ones. Mastering vocabulary occurs by studying the compatibility of words, phrases and combinations of words. Collocations are an isolated concept, meaning certain words in a language that tend to be used together. Working with collocations is an essential component of the lexical skills formation, accordingly, we should speak about the inclusion of collocational competence in communicative competence. Analysis of the methodic literature showed that the issue of the collocations’ role in the lexical speech skills formation is not very disclosed in the domestic and foreign methodic literature. In the presented article: 1) we conduct an analysis of the works of domestic and foreign scientists on the lexical approach in teaching foreign language; 2) we prove that the process of learning vocabulary goes by learning certain combinations of words and the ability to use them; 3) we derive the definition of collocations based on the definitions and classifications of scientists; 4) we determine the key place of collocations in the vocabulary learning.
