Regular physical activity is associated with enhanced health and reduced risk of all-cause mortality. Despite the positive effects of physical activity on health, life has become more sedentary and the decrease in PA has affected people of all ages. The aim of our study was to assess the level of physical activity and related sociodemographic factors of adults aged 18 to 45. Our results showed statistically significant relationships in the majority of the variables examined. Physical activity is undertaken by people of all ages, both residents of cities and rural areas. Among the surveyed inhabitants of the Podkarpackie Province, men much more often than women declare regular willingness to physical activity. The conducted own research shows that 40.90% of the studied group lead an active lifestyle, 31.06% not very active. An important issue is the use of stimulants during physical activity. The problem of using more serious stimulants, i.e. psychoactive substances in my own research, this hypothesis was not confirmed. <p> </p><p><strong> Article visualizations:</strong></p><p><img src="/-counters-/edu_01/0774/a.php" alt="Hit counter" /></p>

PurposeThis study aimed to explore the understanding of Malaysian adolescents towards concept of physical activity (PA) and their perceived facilitators and barriers in practising an active lifestyle.Design/methodology/approachUsing a quota sampling method, a total of 12 focus group discussions (FGDs) were performed at two secondary schools, which were randomly selected in Selangor. This study involved 72 adolescents (males = 51.4%, females = 48.6%) aged 13–14 years. Based on ethnicity, there was an equal number of Malay, Chinese and Indian participants (n = 24, 33.3%). For analysing the outcome from the FGDs, thematic analysis was applied.FindingsThe adolescents perceived exercise and PA as structured games. They perceived that exercise could have positive effects on the body, appearance and health, and PA as a daily routine. Common differences between exercise and PA were based on frequency, intensity, energy and venue. Perceived facilitators in practising an active lifestyle include concern about body or health, have companions, familial or peer influence, availability of facilities in the neighbourhood and have scheduled time for exercise. Time constraint, no motivation, physically unwell or tired, no companion, security issue at playground or exercise facilities or venue, and weather were mentioned as barriers in practising an active lifestyle.Originality/valueThis study contributed to an improved understanding of the adolescents’ concept of PA, as well as their perceived facilitators and barriers in practising an active lifestyle. The study suggested that health intervention should embrace a way of promoting the immediate advantages of practicing an active lifestyle in order to reinforce the importance of an active lifestyle among adolescents. Furthermore, future intervention should emphasise on educating the adolescents on ways to cope with environmental barriers when practicing an active lifestyle.

ABSTRACT. Clinical trials of the effects of physical activity have reported improvements in symptoms and quality of life in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Additionally, morphological brain changes after exercising were reported in PD animal models. However, these lifestyle-related changes were not evaluated in postmortem brain tissue. Objective: We aimed to evaluate, by immunohistochemistry, astrocytes, tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and structural proteins expression (neurofilaments and microtubules — MAP2) changes in postmortem brain samples of individuals with Lewy body pathology. Methods: Braak PD stage≥III samples, classified by neuropathology analysis, from The Biobank for Aging Studies were classified into active (n=12) and non-active (n=12) groups, according to physical activity lifestyle, and paired by age, sex and Braak staging. Substantia nigra and basal ganglia were evaluated. Results: Groups were not different in terms of age or gender and had similar PD neuropathological burden (p=1.00). We observed higher TH expression in the active group in the substantia nigra and the basal ganglia (p=0.04). Astrocytes was greater in the non-active subjects in the midbrain (p=0.03) and basal ganglia (p=0.0004). MAP2 levels were higher for non-active participants in the basal ganglia (p=0.003) and similar between groups in the substantia nigra (p=0.46). Neurofilament levels for non-active participants were higher in the substantia nigra (p=0.006) but not in the basal ganglia (p=0.24). Conclusion: Active lifestyle seems to promote positive effects on brain by maintaining dopamine synthesis and structural protein expression in the nigrostriatal system and decrease astrogliosis in subjects with the same PD neuropathology burden.

Abstract Background Physical activity is a modifiable risk factor associated with health benefits. We hypothesized that a more active lifestyle in older adults is associated with a reduced risk of incident parkinsonism and a slower rate of its progression. Methods Total daily physical activity was recorded with an activity monitor in 889 community-dwelling older adults participating in the Rush Memory and Aging Project. Four parkinsonian signs were assessed with a modified motor portion of the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale and summarized as a categorical measure and continuous global parkinsonian score. We used Cox models to determine whether physical activity was associated with incident parkinsonism and linear mixed-effects models to examine if physical activity was associated with the rate of progressive parkinsonism. Results During an average follow-up of 4 years, 233 of 682 (34%) participants, without parkinsonism, developed incident parkinsonism. In Cox models controlling for age, sex, and education, a higher level of physical activity was associated with a reduced risk of developing parkinsonism (hazard ratio = 0.79; 95% CI = 0.70–0.88, p &lt; .001). This association was not attenuated when controlling for cognition, depressive symptoms, Apolipoprotein E ℇ4 allele, and chronic health conditions. In a linear mixed-effects model including all participants (N = 889) which controlled for age, sex, and education, a 1 SD total daily physical activity was associated with a 20% slower rate of progression of parkinsonism. Conclusion Older adults with a more active lifestyle have a reduced risk for parkinsonism and a slower rate of its progression.

Introduction: Animal studies suggest oppositional effects for voluntary and involuntary physical activity (PA). To assess this in humans, we used distinct domains of PA (sports, leisure time, work) as well as physical fitness and associated these variables with all-cause, cardiovascular (CVD) and cancer mortality in a large population-based cohort. Methods: Data of 2,925 participants from the Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP-1) were used [median age: 48 (interquartile range (IQR): 35, 62) years (y), 52% [[female symbol]]]. All-cause and cause-specific mortality was determined after a median follow-up of 7.0 y (IQR: 5.6 - 6.2). A Sports index (SI), Leisure Time index (LTI) and Work index (WI) were assessed using a modified Baecke questionnaire. Maximal oxygen consumption (VO2peak), oxygen consumption at the anaerobic threshold (VO2@AT), and maximal work load (Wmax) were measured on a bicycle ergometer during symptom-limited cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET). Cox models were adjusted for sex, age, smoking, alcohol consumption, years of schooling, income, and body mass index. Results: A total of 156 subjects died due to all-cause, 53 due to CVD and 50 due to cancer after follow-up. After adjustment, SI [hazard ratio (HR) per SD: 0.27; 95%-confidence interval (CI): 0.13; 0.55] and LTI (HR per SD: 0.34; 95%-CI: 0.15; 0.77) were associated with a reduced risk of all-cause mortality. WI was not associated with all-cause mortality. SI was associated with reduced risk of CVD mortality (HR: 0.26; 95%-CI: 0.07; 0.96). All CPET measures were significantly related to reduced risk of all-cause and cancer mortality (VO2peak - all-cause HR per SD: 0.007; 95%-CI: 0.001; 0.057 and cancer HR per SD: 0.011; 95%-CI: 0.005; 0.210; VO2@AT - all-cause HR per SD: 0.047; 95%-CI: 0.001; 0.028 and cancer HR per SD: 0.052; 95%-CI: 0.004; 0.073; Wmax - all-cause HR per SD: 0.012; 95%-CI: 0.002; 0.074 and cancer HR per SD: 0.01; 95%-CI: 0.0007; 0.166). Conclusion: Voluntary PA was associated with a reduced risk for all-cause and CVD mortality, while occupational PA was not. Exercise capacity was inversely related to all-cause and cancer mortality. Our results indicate that the benefits of PA may be limited to voluntary PA. Thus, questionnaires need to differentiate between voluntary and occupational PA.

The aim of the present analysis was to evaluate the association of the Mediterranean diet (MeDi), smoking habits and physical activity with all-cause mortality in an Italian population during a 20-year follow-up study. A total of 1693 subjects aged 40–74 who enrolled in the study in 1991–5 were asked about dietary and other lifestyle information at baseline. Adherence to the MeDi was evaluated by the Mediterranean dietary score (MedDietScore). A healthy lifestyle score was computed by assigning 1 point each for a medium or high adherence to the MedDietScore, non-smoking and physical activity. Cox models were used to assess the associations between lifestyle factors and healthy lifestyle scores and all-cause mortality, adjusting for potential confounders. The final sample included 974 subjects with complete data and without chronic disease at baseline. During a median of 17·4 years of follow-up, 193 people died. Subjects with high adherence to the MedDietScore (hazard ratio (HR) 0·62, 95 % CI 0·43, 0·89)), non-smokers (HR 0·71, 95 % CI 0·51, 0·98) and physically active subjects (HR 0·55, 95 % CI 0·36, 0·82) were at low risk of death. Each point increase in the MedDietScore was associated with a significant 5 % reduction of death risk. Subjects with 1, 2 or 3 healthy lifestyle behaviours had a significantly 39, 56, and 73 % reduced risk of death, respectively. A high adherence to MeDi, non-smoking and physical activity were strongly associated with a reduced risk of all-cause mortality in healthy subjects after long-term follow-up. This reduction was even stronger when the healthy lifestyle behaviours were combined.

Introduction: Physical activity is associated with decreased rates of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and mortality. However, high levels of physical activity (PA) have paradoxically been linked with elevated levels of coronary artery calcium (CAC). It remains unclear whether high levels of physical activity in the presence of high CAC are associated with adverse outcomes in a diverse, multi-ethnic population. Hypothesis: We hypothesized that high compared to low levels of PA are associated with a reduction in incident ASCVD and all-cause mortality, even in the presence of high CAC. Methods: Baseline total PA (MET-min/week) in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA), obtained via questionnaire, was divided into quartiles. CAC was dichotomized into low (CAC <100 Agatston Units (AU)) and high (CAC ≥100 AU) categories. Outcomes of interest included ASCVD and all-cause mortality. Cox proportional hazard regression analysis was used to assess associations between PA, ASCVD, and all-cause mortality among low and high CAC groups. Results: Among the 6,814 participants included in this study, the average age was 62 years, 53% were female, and 38% were non-Hispanic white. In participants with CAC <100 AU and PA in the highest quartile, we observed a significant reduction in ASCVD and all-cause mortality compared with participants in the lowest PA quartile (Table1). In participants with CAC ≥100 AU and PA in the highest quartile, we observed a significant reduction in all-cause mortality, but no difference in the risk of ASCVD compared with participants in the lowest PA quartile. Conclusions: Our study suggests that high levels of PA are associated with a reduced risk of ASCVD and all-cause mortality among individuals with low CAC, and a reduced risk of all-cause mortality among individuals with high CAC. There was no evidence to suggest an increased risk of ASCVD from high levels of PA in individuals with high CAC.

Background: Three fourth of the world’s death burden is shared by low to middle income countries due to non-communicable diseases. Physical inactivity is one of the important preventable risk factor in non-communicable diseases. It amounts to 4th leading risk factor for global mortality. Hence, this study was conducted to study the physical activity level and its correlates among adult patients attending health training centres in Nagpur. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted among adult patients attending the health centres of Indira Gandhi Government Medical College. Pregnant women, lactating women, debilitated patients and patients not giving consent were excluded from the study. A preformed and pretested questionnaire was used to conduct the interviews which included socio-demographic variables like age, sex, and educational status. Anthropometric measurements and blood pressure were measured according to the standard guidelines. The physical activity level was calculated using the principles of 1985 FAO/WHO/UNU expert consultation (WHO, 1985). Results: Of 200 study subjects, 59% were having a sedentary lifestyle, 27% were having a moderately active lifestyle and 14% were having a vigorously active lifestyle. A statistically significant increasing trend for sedentary study subjects (p =0.002 with age was found. Those who reported sedentary physical activity levels had 3.42 odds of being hypertensive, 7.44 times odds of being diabetic, 3 times odds of being overweight and 2.41 odds of being obese. The adults in urban areas were having significantly less physical activity levels when compared rural areas. Conclusions: Higher levels of sedentary lifestyle were found in urban areas compared to rural areas. As the age increased the sedentary lifestyle was having a significantly increasing trend. Physical activity was associated with the diabetic status, hypertensive status, and obesity status.

Being physically active has positive effects on fibromyalgia functioning. However, promoting an active lifestyle in these patients continues to be a relevant clinical challenge. Our aim was to test a motivational model to explain light (LPA) and moderate-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). A cross-sectional prospective study was conducted at a tertiary level of care. Participants completed sociodemographic, clinical, motivational (physical activity self-efficacy and goal preferences) and behavioral measures (activity avoidance). LPA and MVPA were measured with triaxial accelerometers, starting the same day of the aforementioned assessment. Out of 211 women, 183 completed this measure. Structural models were performed. Our results show that the best fit indices (CFI = 0.97, SRMR = 0.04) showed a model with direct influence of PA self-efficacy on MVPA (p < 0.01) and indirect influence on LPA (p < 0.001). LPA received the influence of PA self-efficacy mainly through activity avoidance (p < 0.01). Clinical variables did not have any effect on PA intensities. Thus, the motivational variables showed different paths to explain two PA intensities. Targeting PA self-efficacy in rehabilitation settings is needed to enhance both daily LPA and MVPA intensities.
