The present article aims at studying the phenomenon of artistic concept by providing a detailed analysis of linguistic choices and patterns in the text with a systematic consideration of the mental processes and representations that are involved in the process of interpretation. The tools provided by the recent developments in cognitive approach are applied to enlarge the scope of studies in artistic concepts in general and also to highlight the major features that make the artistic concept distinct from the general cultural concepts. The practical study is based on alienation – one of the key concepts exploited in the contemporary literature.

In the Macedonian literary language the analytic da-construction used in an independent clause has a wide range of possible modal meanings, the most common of which are imperative and optative. The present article offers a detailed analysis of the semantics and functions of the Macedonian optative da-construction based on fiction and journalistic texts. The first part of the article deals with the specificities of the optative as a category which primarily considers the subject of a wish. In accordance with the semantic characteristics of this category, optative constructions are used in those discourse text types where the speakers are explicitly designated (the most natural context for the optative is the dialogue). The analysis of the Macedonian material includes instances of atypical usage of the optative da-construction, in which the wish of the subject is not apparent and thereby produces new emotional tonalities perceptible to the reader of a fiction/journalistic text. The study describes Macedonian constructions involving two different verb forms: 1) present tense form (da + praes) and 2) imperfective form (da + impf). These constructions formally designate the hypothetical and counterfactual status of the optative situation, respectively. Thus, the examples in the analysis are ordered according to two types of constructions, which reflect the speaker’s view on the probability of the realisation of his/her wish. Unrealistic wishes can be communicated through the present da-construction, while the imperfective construction denotes situations in which the wish can be realised in the future. The second part of the article is devoted to performative optative da-constructions, which express formulas of speech etiquette, wishes and curses. The analysis demonstrates that these constructions lose their magical functions, when used outside of the ritual context, and begin to function as interjections.

Abstract This contribution deals with a significant gap in the studia Polycarpiana. It focuses, in particular, on a Church Slavonic translation of the Martyrdom of Polycarp, one of the earliest of Christian martyria. This versional evidence has not been published until now and, consequently, not taken into account by any of the previous editions of the Martyrdom. The present article offers a collation and a detailed analysis of the earliest available copy of the translation. Eventually it shows that the Slavonic version may provide an independent (from the extant Greek manuscripts) testimony to the text of the Martyrdom and as such is of significant text-critical value.

This article reviews the methodological principles of studying cultural concepts in the context of cognitive approach, possibilities for conducting reconstruction of certain fragments of linguistic worldview based on the material of digital text corpora. Leaning on the cognitive approach towards concept as a unit of structured and unstructured knowledge that forms cognition of a separate individual and culture as a whole, results of conceptual research of the texts of philosophers who view culture as symbolic creativity of a person associated with freedom (concepts of I. Kant, E. Cassirer, N. A. Berdyaev), the authors conducted reconstruction of certain fragments of the linguistic worldview and ordinary consciousness, correlated with the concept of “culture” in digital text corpora in the Russian and Anglo-Saxon cultures. Examination of the contexts of usage of verbal representations of the concept of “culture” in the digital text corpora of Russian language and different varieties of English language demonstrates that the crucial ideological values of Anglo-Saxon linguistic worldview are the following representations: culture is of instrumental nature; civilization is considered as the path development of humanity; freedom is viewed as an intrinsic right to freedom that should be protected, i.e. initial and inherent to a human. In the Russian-language texts, culture implies the value-based attitude towards world, mostly associated with the national culture; civilization is viewed in the context of a value-based attitude towards world, but as the path of development of humanity as a whole; freedom has value-based individual, personalistic connotation, supposed to be full, absolute, which is often understood as the liberty of action and choice. It is underlines that utilization of corpus methods allows reconstructing the techniques of formation of worldview, choice of value priorities, mechanisms of perception of surrounding reality in a specific culture from contexts of practical usage of the verbal manifestations of cultural concepts.

THE OPINION OF THE FAMILY DIAGNOSTIC-ADVISORY CENTRE AS THE EVIDENCE IN DIVORCE CASES AND ITS INFLUENCE ON JUDGEMENTS (IN THE LIGHT OF C OURT RECORDS)Summary The present article contains results of studies conducted in the Institute of Justice in Warsaw. Basis for the research was 100 judgments in divorce cases by Polish provincial courts from 1997 to 1998. Each of the examined judgments was done after hearing by court of the Family Diagnostic - Advisory Centre (FDAC) opinion in cases including decision as to the guilt for breaking up of marriage and subsequent granting of the paternal authority to the innocent party. The study is going to establish relation between opinions by the FDAC and judgments.The study contains complex and detailed analysis of court decision and its grounds. It shows that opinion given by FDAC is very influential for courts granting judgments which followed it in 80% of analyzed cases. However not all of the suggestions given by experts were relevant. In the majority of the examined cases a mistake made by the expert consisted of the ignorance of law and consequendy of the ambiguous wording of the opinion. Such an opinion was then followed by the judge who usually chose the simplest solution granting the full parental authority to both of the divorced spouses thus avoiding the time consuming and laborious procedure based on the article 58 of the Code of Family and Guardianship Law determining possibility of limitation of the parental authority.Such approach could be declared as an opportunistic one, and provokes postulate de lege ferenda for abolishment of the institution of granting the full parental authority to both of the divorced spouses. Proposed change should simplify courts procedure as well as enable the FDEC to develop its activity as family advisory centers which until now does not exist in Polish legal system.

<p>The tradition of studying Spanish Renaissance in Russia is quite a complicated phenomenon, which requires a detailed analysis. The main questions which arise when referring to the issue are those of developmental patterns and interdisciplinary aspect of the letter. Spanish Renaissance culture is traditionally the subject to scrutiny for historians, philologists and art historians. The present article aims to outline a preliminary picture of interdisciplinary interaction, which gained momentum in the Soviet period of Russian Hispanism. Special attention is paid to the imminent figures of Spanish Renaissance historiography, as well as their ideas and concepts. The evolution of Spanish Renaissance studies is described against the background of the principal research areas. The present paper will be of interest to both intellectual historians and scholars investigating Renaissance and medieval history.</p>

Modern English includes a range of standard and nonstandard varieties that are spoken around the world and differ at all levels of language structure. The purpose of this article is to overview international variation of English lexis, discover similarities intersecting this diversity, find out about productive patterns of lexical change and interpret them from a cognitive perspective. The paper demonstrates the importance of internal and external sources of borrowing, considers the ways of coining new vocabulary, gives attention to efficient strategies employed to name colonial settings and to distinguish newly forming identities from British and other English-speaking communities. Varying experience of adjustment to overseas environments stimulated a high degree of lexical change and heteronymy. Although in different regions English emerged from unique colonial contexts, speakers’ precolonial experience, knowledge and intuitions about the world played a significant role in the processes of categorization and conceptualization, and hence naming. It is argued that it is possible to discern common cognitive ground for such diversity in lexis.

A familiar feature in Pauline scholarship is the view that Sin as a power, and the concomitant forces of the flesh and death, are the dominant elements in Paul's account of the human plight. The present article seeks not to deny the significance of these elements, but to argue that equally important are ‘sins’ or individual infractions of the divine will. It is argued here that recent developments in Pauline studies have, in combination, led to an unwarranted downplaying of sins plural. In a number of key passages, Paul includes such acts of transgression in his account of the human plight.

Humans perform activities collaboratively or individually, and these activities, more often than not, involve both physical and mental processes. However, irrespective of whether individual or collective functioning, knowledge creation is a personal experience. Nevertheless, the general tenet of this paper is that knowledge is created in a human’s mind and resides in the head. Hence, it posits that knowledge creation is cognitive (associated with the neurological structures of the brain) and psychological (involving consciousness)—a psycho-cognitive process. This study thus employs a “Cognaction” mechanism that is based on the assumptions captured below. The mechanism premised that the human cognitive chamber consists of 3C modes of comprehension (for interpreting stimuli transmitted to the brain by sensory organs), contextualisation (for mindful connecting of chunks to existing schemas), and conceptualisation (for evaluative reflection in a manner that leads to drawing inference and building themes or new concepts). It demonstrates that as diverse skill sets are applied to a task, they generate varieties of effects and outcomes. The outcomes though are distinctive and at the same time are cospecialised. Thus, the psycho-cognitive perspective demonstrates knowledge creation as a cocreation process and sees knowledge as a mix of cocreated, cognitive structures. In view of these, the study provides the missing explanation on how the knowledge archetypes emerged. And it provides the missing link between the belief that “knowledge is created in the head” and knowledge creation theory.

Much effort is currently going into developing leave policies for early parenthood; the results, though, are variable and uneven, due in large part to the politics of leave policy, with many issues, as we have argued, left unresolved. Moreover, much policy-making energy is narrowly focused. Rather than recent developments in leave representing the final stages of what must be done, it is apparent that our societies are still only in the early stages of appreciating what can be done. With much of the current policy attention focused on leave for parents of young children, we have hardly begun to question what future directions policy should take if it is to respond to the wider changes and challenges that our societies face. In short, the scale of the transformation we need is large, yet only dimly apparent. It is these considerations – both detailed analysis and improvement of existing policies and thinking broadly about possible future directions for leave policy – that have motivated the writing of this book.

This study describes an objective index-based textbook evaluation method that can be efficiently and reliably applied to large collections of introductory textbooks. The method was designed to help an instructor or textbook review committee reduce the pool of available introductory textbooks to a manageable number for more in-depth treatments. Initial results indicated that there was a great deal of variability among introductory educational psychology textbooks in the extent of their coverage of recent developments in cognitive psychology. Based on the dimensions assessed (key concepts and major theorists referenced), the majority of textbooks were eliminated from further consideration. The advantages and limitations of this and other textbook evaluation procedures are discussed.
