Physical Education (PE) in elementary schools has so far been extensively geared towards achieving character goals. However, not all of these goals have been well accomplished by teachers. This research aims to examine three fundamental issues in PE practice, i.e., to define PE teachers perceptions of character education, to identify problems of PE teachers in promoting character education, and to determine whether PE teachers consider character education is plausible to be implemented through PE activities. This study used a case study and a content analysis in the qualitative research method. The data were obtained from 53 PE teachers who worked in 53 elementary schools from 26 sub-districts in Sumedang Regency through an accessible case sampling method. This study employed individual interviews (10-15 minutes) in a semi-structured interview technique. Content analysis was used to analyze the interview scripts. This study revealed that character education is defined as the process of individual alteration from family, school, and social life. Meanwhile, the teachers stated that the curriculum is considered to be not precisely accessible for the development of character education since they were still confused about curriculum implementation. However, they believed that PE is effective to promote character education.

This study explored the underlying processes associated with the policy of increasing qualified physical education teachers (QPETs) in Singapore primary schools. Data were collected from the National Archives of Singapore, Newslink, NewpaperSG and documents. An ‘archaeological analysis’ by Foucault (1972) was used to trace the discursive conditions which enabled and facilitated the policy. Three distinct elements were borrowed from ‘The Archaeology of Knowledge and the Discourse on Language’, namely: the status – as reflected in the positions of individuals influencing the PE policies and initiatives; the institutional sites – as in the locations of the decisions being exercised, and; the situation – identified by the key events leading to the decision to increase QPETs in primary schools. The conclusions based on the analysis of these elements offer a clearer understanding of the various contributions to the adoption of the policy and serve to provide an insightful lens to policymakers who might seek to redesign the future shape of Physical Education.

Biomechanical knowledge is essential for professional practice of physical education teachers, but it is still little applied by them. This study examined the effectiveness of a continuing education program based on meaningful learning theory to improve understanding of biomechanical principles and their application by physical education teachers. A pedagogical intervention study was developed using a mixed methods approach. Statistical analysis was performed to compare pretest and post-test scores, and content analysis to categorize the teachers' evaluation of classes. The program created significant increases in mastery of biomechanical concepts in teachers studied who had strong perceptions of the course, peer interaction, and application to professional practice. Difficulties perceived were related to lack of time to study and prior biomechanical knowledge.

Abstract. Currently, the Sport Education model stands out among the teaching approaches centered on the students and having a higher impact on the Physical Education teachers. The benefits of the hybridization based on self-made materials have not been studied either longitudinally or in Primary Education. The objective was to know and to compare the assessment of teachers and their students regarding the use of two types of materials (conventional and self-made) during two consecutive Sport Education seasons. A total of 51 students enrolled in grades 3 and 4 of Primary Education and their two Physical Education teachers took part in the experience. We used a quasi-experimental simple crossover design with randomized groups and non-probabilistic convenience sampling, in which the two levels of the independent variable (conventional and self-made materials) were applied in the two grade levels participating in the study. Data were collected by means of teacher diaries, group interviews with the students and individual interviews with the teachers, before and after implementation of each of the following didactic units: «ultimate» and «indiacas». Data collection was performed using constant comparisons. The results showed a high level of students’ enthusiasm during both didactic units, although the data analyzed indicated a methodological inertia to the self-made material, according to the order type of the used material. Besides, it was found that the self-made material encourages participation in extracurricular physical activities. Further studies are required to analyze physical activity levels in and outside the Physical Education setting as a function of the material used.

Purpose: This study seeks to analyze the involvement of the various stakeholders related to the educational context, namely school management team, teaching staff, families, and students, to foster the social inclusion of immigrant girls through their participation in physical activities. Methods: Data consisted of interviews and focus group sessions involving 19 physical education (PE) teachers from state primary schools in Catalonia, Spain. Results: The involvement of the stakeholders can foster greater inclusion of such immigrant girls through initiatives, such as: extracurricular physical activities specifically designed for them; the creation of specific spaces for their physical activities; a greater number of PE class hours for immigrant newcomer pupils; supportive feedback for these girls from PE teachers; and greater consideration of these girls’ interests and preference in PE programming. Conclusion: These findings suggest that the greater the degree of involvement and cohesion among the various parties, the higher the likelihood of successful social inclusion.

In the study, the aim is to determine the effects of the application of first aid training lessons on sports injuries. The group of the study was determined by the simple random sampling method included in the random sampling technique and consists of 20 physical education teachers who are still on duty in the 2020-2021 academic year. All of the physical education teachers are experienced teachers who have taken first aid lessons in undergraduate education. Vignette technique, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the research. With the technique in question, teachers were asked to express their opinions following the first aid scenarios. The interviews were made over the phone and recorded with the consent of the participants. Content analysis was used in the study, and the validity and reliability of the data were provided. The opinions received from the participants were examined and themes were created by the content analysis and given with direct quotations. The opinions of the participants were interpreted by comparing with the findings of the experts in the field in accordance with the vignette technique. According to the results of the study, it was determined that physical education teachers gave similar answers to expert opinions about all scenarios. However, the accuracy rates of these answers vary with the scenarios. Therefore, it was determined that teachers' first aid knowledge varies, in some cases, they behave closely to expert opinions, and in some others, they move away from expert opinions. It has been observed that this situation resembles similar studies in the literature. When the mentioned results are compared with the literature; it is recommended that first aid training be sustainable and implementation techniques are continuously improved.

The purpose of this study is to find out the views of teachers of physical education about how they define character education, whether they think national education curriculum and the curriculum of private schools are suitable for character education and whether they think character education can be applied in physical education lessons. Case report design was used in this study which was prepared with qualitative research method. The sample group of the study consists of 6 physical education teachers working in 3 secondary schools and 2 high schools of Kutahya city center which were determined with easily accessible case sampling method, which is one of the purposive sampling methods. Individual interviews which lasted for an average of 15-20 minutes were conducted with physical education teachers within the context of semi-structured interview technique. The participants were informed that the interviews would be voice recorded and later their expressions would be written down to avoid data loss and after necessary permissions were taken, the interviews were recorded. Descriptive and content analysis methods were used to analyze the expressions which were converted into text. The results of the analyses showed that physical education teachers defined character education as changes that occurred in individuals’ behaviors first in the family, then at school and the education conducted to teach individuals socially accepted and correct behaviors. In addition, it was found that the teachers stated that the current curriculum of the country and also physical education curriculum were not suitable for character education; however, since it is a social lesson and since participants are continuously active and in communication, physical education lessons can be more effective than other lessons in terms of character development.

The aim of this study was to get to know physical education teachers’ opinion about the objectives of an education school subject. Their opinions were analysed on the basis of goals hierarchy given by the respondents. Research included 444 PE teachers in primary schools (the second stage of education), middle schools and secondary schools. Research covered the south-west regions of Poland including the following provinces: Silesia, Opole province and Lower Silesia. Diagnostic survey using questionnaires was applied. In the survey as a research tool the questionnaire created by the European Physical Society was used. On the basis of the outcomes it was claimed that the highest place in goals hierarchy takes the goal concerning the preparation of school students to an active and healthy lifestyle. In a group of questioned teachers no gender difference in goals hierarchy was noted. Among variables taken into account in the analysis of teachers’ opinions the place of work (primary school, middle school and secondary school) greatly determined variation between different goals hierarchy. A statistically significant difference appeared between six objectives of physical education.
