Abstract. In this research, a study on stress management in athletes is carried out with a sample of 100 semi-professional football players. Stress control is essential for avoiding a state of anxiety, as this state may have negative effects on other psychological variables of athletes, decreasing their self-confidence and harming their attentional control. The objective of this research is to describe anxiety, self-confidence, and attention-concentration levels in semi-professional footballers by means of analysing stress control. The instrument used for the study is the stress control scale from the Psychological Characteristics related to Sports Performance (CPRD) questionnaire. As a conclusion, it is noteworthy that developing the psychological ability of controlling stress prevents the appearance of anxiety states, allowing athletes to maintain high self-confidence and good attention-concentration capacity during competitions.

The psychological variables that affect competitive performance are called the psychological profile of athletes. In recent years, the interest in female soccer players and the psychological characteristics that affect their performance has increased. The aim of the present study is to analyze the psychological characteristics of female professional soccer players and female amateur soccer players, as well as to determine the differences in the psychological profile of both groups. The participants were 134 federated female soccer players, with an average age of 18.28 years (SD = 4.05). To assess the psychological profile, the questionnaire on Psychological Characteristics related to Sports Performance (CPRD) by Gimeno, Buceta, and Pérez-Llantada (2001) was used. The results showed that female professional players presented higher values for motivation, while the female amateur players presented higher values for stress control and the influence of performance evaluation. These results can have a great impact on coaches’ work, since they can help them to establish tasks and training methods consistent with the characteristics of their players.

The Ottawa Mental Skills Assessment Tool, OMSAT-3*, (Durand-Bush, N., Salmela, J. H., & GreenDemers, I., 2001) is a dialogic tool used all around the world to assess the quality of mental skills of both professional and amateur athletes. This article deals with translation and formation of a Czech version. It analyses the findings related to sports talent with an emphasis on sports talent identification and mental skills. OMSAT-3* is comprised of forty-eight questions. The questionnaire focuses on twelve psychological characteristics of mental skills divided into three groups – Foundation skills (self-confidence, commitment and goal-setting), Psychosomatic skills (stress control, fear control, relaxation and activation) and Cognitive skills (focusing, refocusing, imagery, mental practise and competition planning). The Czech version of the questionnaire was administrated to athletes (n-254) aged between 11 and 42 years from 26 sport disciplines of various performance levels. The scales reliability was verified in goal-setting, self-confidence, commitment, activation, focusing, competition planning and mental practise, with population more experienced in sport also in stress control. The remaining dimensions (relaxation, fear control, imagery and refocusing) show too low internal consistency. Neither the validity of the Czech version of the questionnaire nor its factor structure were therefore confirmed. Based on an analysis of the translation deficiencies, a new Czech version of the OMSAT-3* questionnaire was created.

Wrestlers (N=49) competing in the 1980 Big Ten championship tournament completed a psychological skills inventory assessing psychological factors used in both training and competition. The relationships between 22 cognitive variables and two performance measures (tournament placement and seasonal won-loss record) were then examined using t-tests and discriminant function analyses. The findings revealed that self-confidence, maximum potential, and use of attentional focusing were the most important variables separating the groups. Specifically, successful wrestlers as compared to less successful wrestlers were more self-confident, indicated that they were closer to achieving their maximum wrestling potential, and more frequently focused their attention only on wrestling-related thoughts prior to competition. Unlike the previous studies, few differences in anxiety level or in coping responses to anxiety were evident between the successful and less successful wrestlers. Limitations of the design used in this type of research are discussed and suggestions for more controlled field experiments examining self-confidence and attentional control intervention techniques are outlined.

Abstract:

In competitive sports a number of physiological, biomechanical, environmental and psychological factors interact to cause increased susceptibility or vulnerability to injury. The aim of this study was to know how psychological work has been carried out in the process of sports training of Spanish Olympic fighters with qualitative methodology, a semi-structured interview was applied to 21 fighters. The results show that the wrestlers believe that they have not adequately worked on the psychological aspects, but most believe this is fundamental in the stage of high competition if you want to achieve excellence. Among the main capacities we can highlight: Self-confidence, capacity for sacrifice, constancy, discipline, perseverance and personal motivation. Pressure-stress occurs before the competition due to the anxiety motivated by any potential weight increase. Therefore, the Olympic fighters demand more international meetings with the purpose of improving their emotional state. Accordingly, motivation and self-confidence are considered to be the main conditioning and important psychological variables in sports performance, and therefore they are predictors of success in the Olympic fight.
