Abstract:

In competitive sports a number of physiological, biomechanical, environmental and psychological factors interact to cause increased susceptibility or vulnerability to injury. We now better understand the importance of psychological variables in the origin of injuries, a number of previous studies have identified certain factors that could predict sports injuries. The aim of this study is to analyze the influence of psychological characteristics associated with athletic performance, competitive trait anxiety and mood in injury occurrence. Participants were 115 athletes, members of specialization programs, who were administered the Psychological Inventory on Athletic Execution (IPED), Sport Competition Anxiety Test (SCAT) and Profile of Mood States (POMS). Subsequent lesions were recorded over a period of 10 months. The results indicate that self-confidence and competitive trait anxiety were significant predictors of the number of injuries. Moreover, this relationship between injuries, anxiety and self-confidence is maintained when the effect of other variables is controlled. These results are discussed and a series of considerations at the applied level are proposed.

Abstract. In this research, a study on stress management in athletes is carried out with a sample of 100 semi-professional football players. Stress control is essential for avoiding a state of anxiety, as this state may have negative effects on other psychological variables of athletes, decreasing their self-confidence and harming their attentional control. The objective of this research is to describe anxiety, self-confidence, and attention-concentration levels in semi-professional footballers by means of analysing stress control. The instrument used for the study is the stress control scale from the Psychological Characteristics related to Sports Performance (CPRD) questionnaire. As a conclusion, it is noteworthy that developing the psychological ability of controlling stress prevents the appearance of anxiety states, allowing athletes to maintain high self-confidence and good attention-concentration capacity during competitions.

This study aims to investigate whether simple and convenient progressive relaxation training (PRT) is effective in enhancing collegiate student athletes’ mental health and sports performance. An experimental group of 14 (6 female) and a control group of 10 (5 female) collegiate student athletes were recruited from among track and field athletes who were preparing for provincial competition. The experimental group was exposed to a PRT intervention in 30-min sessions conducted twice per week for a duration of one month. At baseline, the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (CSAI-2), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Revised Short Scale for Chinese (EPQ-RSC) were completed, while only the CSAI-2 was reassessed at one, two, and three weeks after initiation of the intervention. Additionally, within half a day after completing all one’s individual competition events, the CSAI-2 was again assessed in the two groups recalling their memory of their precompetition state anxiety. Then, the differences in the three dimensions of the CSAI-2 between the two groups at the five time points introduced above were compared. This study also explored whether PRT affected sports performance, defined by the athletes reaching their best records or not, by logistic regressive analysis. This study found significant between-group differences in the self-confidence dimension score at the second and third time points. Through logistic regression analysis, a positive effect of PRT was found for the enhancement of sports performance. In sum, PRT showed positive effects on precompetition state self-confidence and enhanced sports performance among collegiate student athletes.

This study compared the differences in the putter trajectory and psychophysiological variables of winners and losers in a competitive putting game that targeted professional and amateur golfers under stress. Eight professional golfers (handicap: [Formula: see text]) and eight amateur golfers (handicap: [Formula: see text]) participated. To maximize the tension of the competition, the putting game was held in a single-elimination one-on-one knockout tournament with a single 2.1[Formula: see text]m putting competition for each group. In the case of a hole-in or a failure by both golfers, the game resumed until the winner was determined. To compare the golfers during the game, the maximum speed, moving length, and amplitude of the putter head during the back-swing and the follow-through were set as the motion variables; and psychological variables (heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), and Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (CSAI-2)) were analyzed. The results showed significant differences between the putter trajectory variables (maximum velocity and amplitude of the putter head during follow-through) of the groups, but no differences in the psychophysiological variables. In comparing winners and losers within each group, however, the professional group showed a difference in only the psychophysiological variables (HRV and self-confidence of CSAI-2), whereas the amateur group showed a difference in only one putter trajectory variable (follow-through length). It was quantitatively confirmed that factors that determine the outcome of the game differed at a technical level.

Injuries are one of the main problems in sport due to the negative impact on the health and performance of the athlete. Their multi-causal etiology requires that they also be approached from the psychological to understand their behavior in an integral way and achieve greater impacts in its prevention. The present investigation was carried out with the first category Baseball pitchers of the province of Villa Clara, Cuba, with the purpose of determining the relationship between the psychological variables associated with the athlete's performance and the injuries. A total of 48 pitchers were studied, constituting a heterogeneous population, made up of new athletes with greater competitive experience. The Sports Aspects and Injuries Questionnaire, the Trait-State Anxiety Inventory, the Competing State Anxiety Inventory and the Psychological Inventory of Sports Execution were applied. The results obtained show that the pitchers studied have a low perception of the relationship between psychological variables and injuries, also confirming that in the competition there are more injuries than in training. In addition, the results are displaying that athletes with a history of injuries and within these, the ones that most injuries have suffered, present significant differences in the status of certain psychological variables compared to pitchers who have not been injured. This difference can be observed in competition state anxiety, self-confidence, negative coping control, attention control, and visual and imaginative control.

The psychological variables that affect competitive performance are called the psychological profile of athletes. In recent years, the interest in female soccer players and the psychological characteristics that affect their performance has increased. The aim of the present study is to analyze the psychological characteristics of female professional soccer players and female amateur soccer players, as well as to determine the differences in the psychological profile of both groups. The participants were 134 federated female soccer players, with an average age of 18.28 years (SD = 4.05). To assess the psychological profile, the questionnaire on Psychological Characteristics related to Sports Performance (CPRD) by Gimeno, Buceta, and Pérez-Llantada (2001) was used. The results showed that female professional players presented higher values for motivation, while the female amateur players presented higher values for stress control and the influence of performance evaluation. These results can have a great impact on coaches’ work, since they can help them to establish tasks and training methods consistent with the characteristics of their players.

The aim of this study was to know how psychological work has been carried out in the process of sports training of Spanish Olympic fighters with qualitative methodology, a semi-structured interview was applied to 21 fighters. The results show that the wrestlers believe that they have not adequately worked on the psychological aspects, but most believe this is fundamental in the stage of high competition if you want to achieve excellence. Among the main capacities we can highlight: Self-confidence, capacity for sacrifice, constancy, discipline, perseverance and personal motivation. Pressure-stress occurs before the competition due to the anxiety motivated by any potential weight increase. Therefore, the Olympic fighters demand more international meetings with the purpose of improving their emotional state. Accordingly, motivation and self-confidence are considered to be the main conditioning and important psychological variables in sports performance, and therefore they are predictors of success in the Olympic fight.
