Abstract This paper aims to analyse the development of Malaysian artworks of Jalaini Abu Hassan and Fatimah Chik paintings through the Edmund Feldman 1967 approach which is a theory that describes the description, the analysis, the interpretation and the judgement. The theoretical framework of this approach involved four steps of critical analysis processes. Hence, the methodology emphasized the qualitative methodology by observing two (2) paintings which were Tales of the Heroes from year 2010 and Pohon Beringin from year 2002 artworks by the Malay Malaysian artists, Jalaini Abu Hassan and Fatimah Chik, respectively. The findings suggested that the Malaysian painters expressed the value of the Malay identity and philosophy in their artworks. For example, Jalaini Abu Hassan’s Tales of the Heroes that potrayed a guy in Malay’s traditional costume represented the 5 Pillars of Islam, the National Principles (Rukun Negara) and the literal meaning of the traditional Islamic medicine which were applied in Jalaini’s and his father’s lives. Additionally, the Malay value can also be found literally in Pohon Beringin batik painting by Fatimah Chik such as the triangle symbol. To date, banyan tree has a significant meaning in the Malay heritage which have been visualised in the Malay community since the ancestral era. Other than the canvas painting of Fatimah Chik’s Pohon Beringin, the banyan tree has been adapted in many Malay artworks such as Kelantanese Wayang Kulit and Malay film of Bawang Putih Bawang Merah.

Chapter 3 engages with realist political theory throughcritical dialogues with leading realist theorists. It argues that realist political theories are much more susceptible to conservatism, distortion, and idealization than their proponents typically acknowledge. Realism is often not very realistic either in its descriptions of the world or in its political analysis. While realism enables the critical analysis of political norms (the analysis of power and unmasking of ideology), it cannot support substantive normative critique of existing social relations or enable prescriptive theorizing. These two types of critique must be integrated into a single theoretical framework to facilitate emancipatory social transformation.

PurposeThe research technique of shadowing is the most in‐depth type of systematic, direct observation in situ of behaviours within a particular organisational or social setting, and yet, it crucially lacks documentation and critical analysis. The origins of the under‐documenting, coupled with the mutation of the scientific method of shadowing through its adoption by many industries as a means of on‐the‐job training, have led to a misunderstanding of shadowing as a scientific technique. This is problematic at several levels for academics deeply involved in qualitative methodology. The purpose of this paper is to address, in part, this gap in the literature.Design/methodology/approachBy defining shadowing, considering the reasons why shadowing has had little critique from social science scholars and then exploring the problems of it as a research technique, particularly within the current context of ethics regimes, the authors wish to proactively help to avoid unintentional yet delicate fieldwork situations, in which misunderstanding may happen due to the lay use of “shadowing” as a passive (non‐obtrusive) observation.FindingsThe authors argue that the research practice of shadowing implies specific systematic techniques and extensive self‐discipline by the researcher. It also caters for a need in data collection that oversteps traditional observation‐and‐interviewing techniques, by adding a new hermeneutical layer to the information gathered. It becomes an essential tool in the evaluation of public policy initiatives and programmes and in the understanding of not only the mechanics, but of the motivations behind actions and behaviours.Originality/valueThis paper addresses part of a gap in the literature and paves the way for more critical analysis of the dynamics that emerge during the shadowing of a research participant.

This paper has touched one of the most critical area affected due to pandemic situation created by the COVID-19 and its powerful spillover effect on education sector by customizing education pedagogy. Earlier researchers have studied online education separately, whereas this paper discussed the natural transition and systematic review of upsurge of e-learning. The objective of this paper is to make the systematic review of COVID spillover and transition towards e-learning education pedagogy through theoretical framework. The study makes systematic review of switchover towards e-learning and spillover effect of COVID-19 and customization of the education pedagogy. In this study, past literature has been utilized to make critical analysis of spillover effect of COVID-19 and impact on education pedagogy by creation of prepositions. The findings of the study reveal that in the exceptional circumstances of COVID-19, e-learning transition has taken place from conventional to e-learning modules. All over the world, countries have shifted towards online education by schooling out but classes in campaign ignited by Chinese government. The same has also been replicated in other countries of the world during COVID-19.

This research project sought to determine the opportunities for librarians in specialist academic libraries to integrate information literacy into faculty curricula. Information literacy is becoming recognized as increasingly important as a graduate competency by universities, and is a significant component of lifelong learning. The ability of librarians to collaborate with academic faculty staff in order to provide information literacy instruction to students is crucial. The researcher employed a qualitative methodology for the project, interviewing subject librarians who worked with faculty from two specialist academic libraries at the University of Auckland. The theoretical framework of the project was based on the works of Hardesty and Farber, when considering factors relating to librarian-faculty relationships, and of Owusu-Ansah and Grafstein, among others, on factors relating to information literacy. Analysis of data collected yielded results falling within three main areas. Subject librarians within the specialist academic libraries studied considered themselves to be highly accessible, being able to be contacted in person very easily by the academics whose subject discipline resources they administered. They also felt that they were visible, both within the libraries themselves, and within the wider faculty area within which the libraries were situated. The ability to employ information literacy components which were tailor-made for particular courses, grounded within specific subjects facilitated both lecturer and student buy-in. These three factors contribute to the inclusion which subject librarians in specialist academic libraries feel within a community involving all members of faculty, united by geographical location and subject discipline, and which greatly facilitates the integration of information literacy into curricula.

This chapter elaborates on the theoretical framework that serves as a through line for the book in its entirety. Specifically, it draws on discourses about “core” and “casual” games to show how “core” describes a hegemonic set of ideologies that work to frame games in specific, masculinized ways. The chapter also argues, however, that recent industrial changes, from the rise of casual games to the diversification of funding and distribution platforms, serve as counterhegemonic forces, challenging many “core” assumptions about games and audiences. Using a critical analysis of gaming news, the chapter lays out these changes and addresses both their real impact on the games industry and their felt impact on audiences and power structures. Through this, it shows that gaming is in the midst of a crisis of authority, where previously powerful members of the community fear losing control of it. As a result, they are exerting extra force to maintain their privileged position, accounting for the divergent narratives about games that dominate the casualized era.

This article is primarily concerned with interconnections between forms of impegno (political engagement) and aesthetic choices, as they were articulated in the literary and cultural journal Officina. In order to reassess the role of Officina within the Italian cultural and political debate of the day, this article considers two main narratives unfolding in the journal: the aesthetic rejection of Novecentismo, understood as the epitome of artistic autonomy, and the articulation of a form of Marxist impegno suitable for a neo-capitalist society and stemming from the class-based idea of the organic intellectual. Using published and unpublished correspondence, we argue that Officina had a pivotal role in producing a theoretical framework for the conceptualisation of a post-neorealist idea of Marxist critical analysis as well as of intellectual, aesthetic and political engagement.

Nikah is a sacrosanct social contract in Islamic Sharia that brings a man and a woman into formal and lawful relationship as husband and wife and creates the institution of family to serve a number of objectives of Sharia. In view of its centrality in Islamic social life, it has attracted significant scholarly debate among scholars of the four schools of Islamic jurisprudence. However, it is not easy for ordinary readers to grasp in the finer conceptual aspects that attend the concept of Nikah, more so in view of the enormity of the scholarly works on the subject penned down by scholars of the different schools of Muslim jurisprudence. Based on the analysis of the views and explanations of some leading men of letters of various schools, this article attempts to frame a kaleidoscopic picture of the concept of Nikah in Islam, its literal meaning, and the various tricky points related to Nikah. In doing so, it compares and analyses the juridical opinions of the jurists of the four schools. As a qualitative research, it is primarily textual and critical analysis of the written and published works of the scholars on the issues being examined. It entails hermeneutics, thematic analysis and synthesis of various views in order to derive and clarify key themes and issues related to the concept of Nikah.

This paper attempted to analyze critically the women's movement that had been developing so far and tried to offer the ideology of the gender movement based on the values of humanism of Islamic Psychology. This study used a qualitative methodology with a literature approach. The results showed that (1) the male clone tendency in the women's movement had actually been predicted by various parties, including by the female activists. Because of the obsession to equalize the active role of women as equal to men, the women's movement was trapped in standardizing themselves with male masculinity figures. On one hand, they rejected male domination on women, but on the other hand the ambitions of their movements are directed towards seizing the dominant patriarchal system and violating it under the authority of women. Even though Islam places women in the frame of proportionally optimistic rational roles. That is, Islam does not make women fully pretend to be 'backward' entities so that it does not allow them to gain enlightenment and Islam rejects thoughts that are too optimistic to position 'front' women as the sole determinant of their lives and must be above men. Both of these views have reduced women to fall into the destruction or glorification of human quality by ignoring the greatness and power of Sunnatullah over the surrounding conditions; (2) Acording to the values of humanism of Islamic Psychology, the ideology of the gender movement should depart from the needs and be based on a) Women’s self-actualization rather than self-exploitation; b) Women’s Active participation rather than their mobilization and domestication. (c) Partnership rather than rivalism.

Translation of metaphor presents both practical and theoretical problems. Within translation theory, metaphor has often been studied in terms of (un)translatability, which, in turn, has been treated as part of general (un)translatability. This paper examines representative views in this debate, which have been particularly vigorous in the journal Babel. The analysis focuses on three main issues at stake : the classification of metaphor, categories and their translatability, and the (un)translatability of metaphor. The analysis demonstrates that the conceptions of translation and metaphor constitute the pivotal point of the debate. Translation and metaphor have been understood as substitutive notions (A in place of B), according to which translation represents substitution of one linguistic unit by another and metaphor, a substitution of a literal meaning by a figurative meaning. A critical analysis of this conception shows that this static framework view has limitations when describing the dynamic processes of real language usage involving translation and metaphor.
