The term “sustainable development” first appeared as part of discussions regarding the capacity of natural ecosystems to support the current model of economic growth, assuming a strong concern with the preservation of the planet's environmental structures. Initially, these concerns were conceived on a global scale, but soon the need to bring the discussions to the urban locus - the impact of large human agglomerations on the territory and its natural resources - was realized. Thus, the local scale gained importance, since most of the environmental problems originate in the local urban structures and through the lifestyle that they advocate. Cities are serious consumers and degraders of the natural ecosystem, waterproofing soils, polluting the atmosphere, altering the landscape and consuming resources. Based on studies produced by French geographer Cyria Emelianoff and Brazilian economist Henri Acselrad, on the systematization of different representations and practices in urban sustainability, this research paper aims to introduce the design and development of an evaluation model able to assess the degree of sustainability using a techno-material and socio-environmental set of criteria. This model is intended to serve as a benchmark for both the formulation and evaluation of plans, projects and public policies focused on genuine sustainable development.

With the rapid economic development and the highlighting environmental issues, more attention has been paid to ecosystem health and ecological safety. Along with the development of the concept of sustainable development, people gradually realized the importance of natural ecosystems. Ecological safety is the basis of sustainable development. It is a necessary condition to build a harmonious and environment friendly society. A healthy ecosystem is the basic guarantee of the realization of human social and economic development. This paper analyzes the relationship between ecosystem health and ecological safety, and finds that there are many connections and differences between them.According to the comparison of indices in the same evaluation model, the differences are analyzed. The paper helps to avoid the confusion between this two terms, and aims to make the goal of environmental management clear.

The current model for society’s development, based on the unconscious use of natural resources, points to signs of exhaustion, requiring a reflection in order to formulate strategies that overcome the challenge of coexistence between the relationship between man and nature. The use of tools such as sustainable indicators has been shown to be effective in the identification and understanding of socio-environmental phenomena and in the subsequent decision making by public management, assisting in the resolution of problems, and consequently, acting as a resource for sustainable development. This study aims to propose the development of an urban sustainability indicator for the municipality of Umuarama, in the state of Paraná, Brazil. In order to build the indicator, data from different aspects linked to Sach’s sustainability model are to be collected, and later put into statistical treatment to standardize it and make its comparison possible, resulting in its index, which is expected to analyze the current state of the local sustainability and sustainable development.

Equilibrium efficiency and optimum are fundamental concepts that characterize the form of ideal cities. Such forms, coupled with the ‘closed’–‘open’ distinction, provide a rich gamut of urban structures. Yet transcending this diversity of types and individualistic attributes there is a more general, unified level of analysis. Long (1971) has worked at this level, and the trend is continued in this paper. Externalities, policies, and public goods are fundamental issues underlining the recent strong concern for normative analysis. Such issues are typically related to questions of environmental quality. Indeed the impact of environmental quality upon urban structure is decisive: the message emerges clearly as the main conclusion of this essay. The gist of the analysis concerns relations among environmental quality, composition of society, and spatial choice. These relations are general in the sense that they apply both to positive and to normative models of cities.

The aim of this work was to show what effect biotechnology can have on the quality of human life, and on the condition of the natural environment. A number of biotechnological processes have been analyzed that can significantly improve the quality of human life, while at the same time caring for the natural environment. The prospects for the development of these processes on the global and Polish market were also analyzed. As it turned out, some of the process analyzed need further refinement to be implemented on a global scale, while others may be successfully implemented in the coming years, contributing to the improvement of the quality of such aspects of human life high-quality food products, health protection and good public health. Biotechnological processes may also have wide application in the protection and remediation of the natural environment.

With the development of open source community, through the interaction of developers, the collaborative development of software, and the sharing of software tools, the formation of open source software ecosystem has matured. Natural ecosystems provide ecological services on which human beings depend. Maintaining a healthy natural ecosystem is a necessity for the sustainable development of mankind. Similarly, maintaining a healthy ecosystem of open source software is also a prerequisite for the sustainable development of open source communities, such as GitHub. This paper takes GitHub as an example to analyze the health condition of open source ecosystem and, also, it is a research area in Symmetry. Firstly, the paper presents the healthy definition of GitHub open source ecosystem health and, then, according to the main components of natural ecosystem health, the paper proposes the health indicators and health indicators evaluation method. Based on the above, the GitHub ecosystem health prediction method is proposed. By analyzing the projects and data collected in GitHub, it is found that, using the proposed evaluation indicators and method, we can analyze the healthy development trend of the GitHub ecosystem and contribute to the stability of ecosystem development.

The article states that the traditional model of economic growth of metallurgy due to the export of energy-intensive products no longer works, new impulses and effective tools are needed to transform the current model of economic growth to the latest model – the model of low-carbon production. Emphasis is placed on the importance of ESG-investment in the process of transformation to a low-carbon economy and its impact on the competitiveness of enterprises. It is substantiated that the introduction of ESG-investment requires the formation of a certain regulatory environment, and accordingly to clarify the substantive component of this concept and its operationalization, bringing the concept to a form that will work with it on a practical level, operate it in solving specific analytical and forecasting tasks, verify or refute research hypotheses. The author’s definition of ESG investing is proposed as an investment aimed at minimizing ESG risks, reducing environmental pollution to levels that do not harm human health and natural ecosystems, as well as strengthening social responsibility and improving corporate governance. It is substantiated that Ukraine’s delay in ratifying international regulations on the introduction of ESG-investing and ignoring the world experience in creating a regulatory environment for investing in ESG-principles threatens metallurgical enterprises with the loss of investors and, accordingly, competitive positions in the global metal market. Using specific examples from world experience, the need to recognize the standardization of reporting on the impact of business on climate and environment, one of the priority issues in the formation of the regulatory environment of ESG-investment. An arsenal of effective measures for the formation of the regulatory environment of ESG-investment, the introduction of which in domestic practice will allow to make effective and optimal management decisions to maintain the position of domestic metallurgical enterprises in the TOP-10 leading countries in metal production.

The solutions to the grand challenges of sustainability, poverty, and health affecting the world will require education and capacity building for all individuals implementing change on a global scale. The challenge ahead is to reach those missed by traditional education and support networks. Online Learning and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have the potential to build knowledge and share best practice experiences among individuals worldwide. This paper examines the case of the FutureLearn Social Enterprise Program, a series of MOOCs with over 50,000 registered learners, of which 15% become active learners, engaging in online exercises, debates, and conversations. This paper draws on quantitative and qualitative data collected over four years. The findings show that the course has not only had an impact on the creation of new startup social enterprises, but it has also supported a large proportion of learners in developing sustainability and social entrepreneurial ideas within a range of organisations in the public, private, and civil society sectors. The findings also show a positive cascading impact effect from the learners registered on the course to those in their network, as ideas are shared, and learners become mentors to others. Our conclusions demonstrate how digital education and online courses contribute to global education for sustainable development and social enterprise development.

Recently, public–private partnerships (PPPs) have attracted renewed attention as a valuable tool to close the gap between public services and social needs. In fact, the United Nations (UN) proposed collaboration across multiple stakeholders as one of the key goals for securing global sustainable development. Yet, PPPs remain a controversial proposition for many due to, among other factors, the complexity and limitation of current systems to assess their impact beyond the notion of value for money. This study offers a conceptual model (EASIER) that accounts for six dimensions that are relevant for social, environmental, and economic progress. We also propose a questionnaire to assess the impact of PPPs on UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and apply it to a PPP contract as an illustration. We advocate the use of EASIER as an initial evaluation model due to its simplicity and its holistic perspective.

The term “sustainable” or “sustainability” is currently used so much and in so many fields that it has become basically part of our everyday lives. It has been connected and linked to almost everything related to our living, to our lifestyle: energy, transport, housing, diet, clothing etc. But what does the term “sustainable” really mean? Many people may have heard about sustainable development or sustainability and may have even tried to have a sustainable living but their efforts might not be enough. The present paper is meant to bring forward a few of the limits of “sustainability” concept. Moreover, it is focused on revealing some arguments from the “other side” along with disagreements regarding some of the principles of “sustainable development” and even critics related to its progress, to its achievements. Another purpose of this paper is to draw attention over some of the issues and obstacles which may threaten the future of sustainability. The paper is also meant to highlight the impact that some stakeholders might have on the evolution of sustainable development due to their financial power, on a global scale.

Increasing anthropogenic activities have significantly altered ecosystems in arid oasis regions. Estimating the impact on a wide range of ecosystem services is important for decision making and the sustainable development of these regions. This study analyzed time-series Landsat data to determine the influences of oasis land-use changes on the ecosystem services in the Kashgar region in Northwest China. The following results were found. The total value of the ecosystem services in the Kashgar region were approximately $10,845.3, $11,218.6, $10,291.7, and $10,127.3 million in 1986, 1996, 2005, and 2015, respectively. The water supply, waste treatment, biodiversity protection, and recreation and cultural services were the four ecosystem services with the highest service value, contributing 77.05% of the total ecosystem services. The combined contribution rate of food production and raw material value was only about 4.02%, relatively small. The sensitivity analysis indicated that the estimated total ecosystem service value (ESV) for this study area was relatively inelastic with respect to the value coefficients. The findings of this study will be crucial for maintaining the stability and sustainable development of the oasis region, where socio-economic development and the integrity of the natural ecosystem complement each other. Furthermore, the results provide a scientific basis for decision makers in land use management, and provide a reference for researchers in the Northwest China.
