Background: Mucuna prurien is a tropical legume also known as velvet bean and has been used by ancient healers’ community for different healing purposes.Objective: This study was carried out to determine the effect of Mucuna Prurien leaves aqueous crude extract on haematological parameters of Wistar rats.Materials and Methods: Twelve  healthy adult wistar rats weighed 1200g ± 1700g  body weight  respectively for (21) days produced periodic body weight gained while assessment of haematological parameters was done using sysmex KX-21N. Outcome values from the assessment were collated as data and statistically analyzed. Results and Discussions: The results  showed that the leave extract produced relatively decreased total white blood cell count (TWBC) though falls within the control normal range. There was significance increase in red blood cell (RBC), packed cell volume (PCV), white blood cell (WBC) and Haemoglobin (HB) concentrations within normal limit which can indicates the possibility of using this leaf in treating anaemia.Conclusion and Recommendations: This study revealed that administration of mucuna prurien for forty eight (48) hours could stimulate erythropoiesis without haema-toxic effect in rat, however, mucuna prurien causes an increase in RBC, platelet, lymphocyte, MCH, MCHC, and MCV; that was significant enough for clinical trial in cases of anemia. Further study is therefore recommended on Mucuna Prurien especially in finding out the lethal dose and the identification of the plant component responsible for the observed leucopoenia so that it can be safer for use in the treatment of anaemia and in order to also avoid uncontrollable increase of red cell parameters (erythrocytosis) and leucopenia.

Costus lucanusianus (ginger lily or monkey sugarcane) is a medicinal plant commonly used to treat various ailments in tropical Africa. The leaves, stem and sometimes the root have been exploited for this purpose. However, it is a common belief in the Niger Delta of Nigeria that the root is poisonous. This study investigated the phytochemical and acute toxicity profiles of the methanol root extract of the plant. Phytochemical screening was conducted using standard procedures to test for alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, anthraquinones, glycosides, triterpenoids/steroids and carbohydrates. The median lethal dose (LD50) was determined using the Arithmetic method of Reed and Muench. This was followed by haematologic, liver and kidney functionality assays at doses of 14, 29 and 58 mg/kg of the methanol root extract. The result obtained showed that the extract contained flavonoids, saponins, triterpenoids and steroids among others, but anthraquinones and alkaloids were not present. The median lethal dose (LD50) value obtained for the extract was 288 mg/kg. The haematologic assay showed significant, p<0.001, dose-dependent decrease in red blood cell parameters and also some white blood cell parameters (such as white blood cell, neutrophil, monocytes and eosinophil counts). Furthermore, the serum levels of the liver enzymes, electrolytes (except K+), urea and creatinine increased significantly as the doses increased. From the foregoing, it could be concluded that the root of Costus lucanusianus is toxic to the kidney and liver and could be a blood poison (hemotoxic). This confirms the ethnobotanical belief that this part of the plant (root) is poisonous.

Abstract Introduction: This study investigated short- and long-term effects of khat (Catha edulis) on hypophyseal, epididymal and testicular morphology, body weight and temperature changes and haematological parameters of rabbits. Materials and Methods: Twenty five male New Zealand White rabbits, divided into five groups were used. First four groups were administered, via intra-gastric tube, 1.5, 4.5, 13.5 and 40.5 g/kg body weight respectively of khat extract thrice a week for 8 weeks while controls received normal saline. Short-term and long-term effects were evaluated for hypophyseal, epididymal and testicular morphology, body temperature as well as body weight changes, food consumption and haematological parameters. Data on haematological parameters, body weight changes, body temperature and food consumption was done using one-way ANOVA at 95% confidence interval using SPSS version 12.0. Results: There was vacuolation in spermatogonia and spermatocytes at high doses while epididymides and hypophyses were unaffected. A significant decrease (P<0.05) in body weight of treatment groups correlated with reduced food intake with increasing doses and chronicity of exposure. Packed cell volume, red blood cell count and haemoglobin concentration decreased while white blood cell count increased with increasing doses. Conclusion: Khat extract had direct effects on spermatogenesis compounded by poor body weight gain, hyperthermia and blood volume loss.

Abstract BackgroundHaematological examination is an important diagnostic tool in the assessment of pig health status. The present study aimed to assess haematological parameters in pigs of different age categories from six farrow-to-finish farms differing in herd health status. The following pig categories were included: 5 age groups of growers (5, 7, 9–10, 11 and 12–13 weeks-old), fatteners and breeding pregnant sows. Individual blood samples for determining complete blood count and white blood cell differential count were taken and group samples of oral fluid and faeces were collected from each animal category in each of the six farms and tested for the detection of Porcine Circovirus Type 2 (PCV2), Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Virus (PRRSV), and Hepatitis E Virus (HEV) using PCR, RT-PCR, and qRT-PCR protocols. Individual blood samples were analysed using an automated laser-based haematology analyser. The following haematological parameters were reported: white blood cell count (WBC), red blood cell count (RBC), haemoglobin concentration (Hb), haematocrit (Hct), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), platelet count (PLT), and percentage and number of neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, basophils, and "large unstained cells" - LUCs. ResultsOn farms free of PRRSV, PCV2 and HEV, age had significant effect on the following parameters: WBC, Hb, MCH, MCHC, PLT, percentage of neutrophils, lymphocytes and eosinophils and absolute numbers of neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, basophils and LUCs. On farms with PRRS, PCV2 and/or HEV, age significantly affected all observed blood parameters except the percentage of LUCs. The percentages of lymphocytes, MCV and Hct were significantly lower by PRRSV while WBC, PLT, percentage and absolute number of neutrophils, basophils and LUCs increased. Significantly lower percentages of lymphocytes and increased percentages and absolute numbers of neutrophils, eosinophils and basophils were caused by PCV2 presence. Significantly lower percentage of lymphocytes and MCV and increased RBC, Hb, percentage and number of basophils and percentage of neutrophils were caused by HEV. Conclusions Alterations of haematological parameters reflected the health status of pigs of different categories on infected and on non-infected farms. Age-related changes in haematological parameters occurred in clinically healthy and in infected pigs.

The goal of this study was to investigate effects of different levels of silicate supplementation in weaning to finishing pigs. A total of 96 piglets [(Landrace × Yorkshire) × Duroc] with initial body weight of 11.30 ± 0.02 kg were used for 16 wk (six replicate pens with four pigs per pen). Dietary treatment consisted of 0% (CON), 0.1% (T1), 0.5% (T2), and 1.0% (T3) silicate in the basal diet. Inclusion of 0.1% dietary silicate increased (P < 0.05) body weight, average daily gain, and gain-to-feed ratio in 0–16 wk. In addition, inclusion of 0.1% dietary silicate increased (P < 0.05) crude protein digestibility in 8 and 16 wk, whereas it decreased (P < 0.05) Escherichia coli count and ammonia emissions throughout the study period. Additionally, inclusion of dietary silicate increased (linear, P < 0.05) white blood cell in 4 wk, whereas it increased (quadratic, P < 0.05) white blood cell counts in 8 and 16 wk. Blood urea nitrogen decreased (quadratic, P < 0.05), and lymphocyte and foot and mouth antibodies increased (quadratic, P < 0.05) when silicate level increased. In conclusion, supplementation of 0.1% silicate in the diet showed positive effects in weaning to finishing pigs.

Saccharomyces boulardii is a probiotic yeast used as a nutritional supplement. Co-trimoxazole, is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent used in the prophylaxis and treatment of infections.The goal of this study was to evaluate the individual and interactive effects of probiotic Saccharomyces boulardii and co-trimoxazole on some haematological parameters in albino rats. Thirty (30) albino Wistar rats weighing 150-200g were divided into five groups; Basal, A, B, C, and D, with six animals in each group. Group A (control) was given a normal rat pellet (standardized feed) and clean water (pH 6.5- 8.5). Group B was administered 5.5mg/kg body weight of the commercial probiotics (Saccharomyces boulardii). Group C was administered 4.4mg/kg body weight of co-trimoxazole. Group D was administered 5.5mg/kg body weight of the commercial probiotics and 4.4mg/kg body weight of co-trimoxazole. All administrations were done using a gavage tube for 15 days. Blood samples were collected for analysis on days 0, 5 and 15. The results showed that Saccharomyces boulardii caused a significant increase (P<0.05) in total white blood cell count and packed cell volume of the treated groups at day 5. On day 15, the total white blood cell count (10.67±0.66), packed cell volume (43.23±0.47), platelet count (932±38.89) and mean platelet volume (8.53±0.38) showed a significant increase (P<0.05) in the probiotic group. The co-trimoxazole group showed a significant reduction (P<0.05) in the packed cell volume and total white blood cell count. This study shows that Saccharomyces boulardii has a positive effect on the haematological profile of the test animals.

Hypoglycaemic potentials of aqueous root extract of Jatropha curcas (250 and 450 mg/kg body weight of rats) was investigated in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Effect of the extract on some haematological parameters was also investigated. Thirty albino rats (Rattus norvegicus) of mean weight 165.0 ± 2.50 g were randomly selected into normal and diabetic groups, each with six rats. Diabetic treated rats were placed on 14.2 mg/kg body weight glucophage (reference drug), 250 mg/kg and 450 mg/kg body weight of extract. All treatments were administered orally, once daily for fifteen days. The blood glucose levels were monitored and the haematological parameters like haemoglobin (Hgb), red blood cell (RBC) count, white blood cell (WBC) count, packed cell volume (PCV), percentage lymphocytes (LYM) and neutrophils (NEUT) were also analyzed. A significant (p<0.05) reduction in fasting Blood Glucose Levels (BGL) was observed in alloxan-induced diabetic rats treated with the extract. There was a significant (p<0.05) reduction in Hgb, PCV, RBC and WBC and its differentials of the diabetic untreated rats while administration of glucophage, 250 and 450 mg/kg body weight of the aqueous extract (Jc250 and Jc450) to diabetic rats significantly (p<0.05) increase all these parameters. These results suggested that the aqueous root extract of Jatropha curcas possesses hypoglycaemic activity and also improved the aberrations in the blood parameters of alloxan-induced diabetic rat.

The aim of the experiment was to evaluate the impact of selenium supplementation on white blood cell parameters in the blood of ewes. The total white blood cell (WBC) and differentiation of leukocytes in blood smear were detected by a microscopic analysis, and the CD4<sup>+</sup> and CD8<sup>+</sup> subsets were detected by flow cytometry. A decrease in the count of WBC was recorded during pregnancy; it was statistically significant only in the group supplemented with organic selenium. In the postpartal period there was a statistically significant increase in the percentages of CD4<sup>+</sup> and CD8<sup>+</sup> subsets but differences between the groups were not statistically significant. The results of the experiment documented that the supplementation of different forms of selenium did not markedly influence the dynamics of blood parameters in non-pregnant, pregnant and lactating ewes if the intake of vitamins and other essential microelements was adequate.

A six week feeding trail was conducted to investigate the effect of honey on the performance and haematological parameters of broilers and Nigerian Local Chickens. The experiment was conducted at the Niger Delta University, Faculty of Agriculture Teaching and Research Farm. Sixty (60) day old chicks which consisted of three treatments, 20 broilers, 20 normal feather and 20 naked neck genotypes were used with each of the genotype having control. Feed and water were given ad-libitum. The experimental birds for the broiler and naked neck genotypes had the highest significant values compared to the control which had significant difference (P<0.05) in their performance, while the control of the normal feather genotype had the highest significant values compared to the experimental birds but there was no significant difference (P>0.05) in their performance. The broiler birds had the highest significant values compared to normal feather and naked neck genotypes and there was a significant difference (P<0.05) in their performance. The effect of honey on haematological parameters showed that there was a significant difference (P<0.05) in White blood cell, neutrophils, lymphocyte, monocyte, eosinophile and basophile of broiler birds, in normal feather, white blood cell, neutrophile and lymphocyte differed significantly (P<0.05) and there was a significant difference (P<0.05) in neutrophile and lymphocyte in the experimental and control for naked neck genotype. In conclusion, the study revealed that the inclusion of honey caused a positive effect on the performance of broilers and naked neck, but showed no effect or reduction in performance in normal feather genotype.
