IBS has been theoretically and practically proven to improve the construction delivery apart from reducing the lead of time and cost throughout its supply chain. Under the Malaysian Construction Industry Transformation Programme (CITP) 2016-2020, it is stated that the government is accelerating the adoption of IBS through mechanisation and modern practices. Despite the government’s initiative, there have been relatively small amounts of materials published discussing the patterns in IBS publications in Malaysia and what the future holds for IBS. This paper explores a thematic review of the literature regarding new definitions and patterns that juxtaposes IBS in the construction industry in Malaysia from 2015 till 2019 by using the thematic review. The findings from the code-to-document analysis using ATLAS.ti 8 found that the patterns and trends on IBS from the year 2015 to 2019. This paper contributes to analysing the patterns and trends of IBS by identifying the thematic code within IBS publications for recommendations of future studies on IBS in Malaysia.

To further enhance the efficiency, capacity and capability of the Malaysian construction industry, the government has been aggressively championing the use of Industrialised Building System (IBS). However, several studies have pointed out that the trade contractors are very concern with the increasing use of IBS in the country because it will reduce their business opportunities.  Therefore, the research is dedicated to address issues faced by the trade contractors with the adoption of IBS. The objectives of this paper are to uncover the impact of IBS to the trade contractors and to suggest solutions to address issues faced by the trade contractors with the implementation of IBS. A fundamental of the methodology is to adopt multiple case studies approach. These projects adopted both conventional and IBS construction method. A number of 8 projects were selected. Interview sessions are conducted with trade and main contractors. Collected data is then modelled by using the combination of fuzzy theory set and simple multi-attribute rating technique. Main contractors’ input on several success factors that lead to the penetration of trade contractors in IBS is evaluated. Some degree of involvement of trade contractors in IBS projects is recommended. It is significant for the trade contractors to obtain skills for IBS approach besides their existing crafts. Furthermore, the trade contractors are suggested to register themselves as IBS components installer as this does not involve high investment capital or they can join the other companies to increase their technical and financial capacity. These findings will inform on numerous policy initiatives to manage the business sustainability of the domestic trade contractors, to improve construction methods, then to modernise and upgrade the construction industry within the country.

In Malaysian construction industry, Industrialised Building System (IBS) has been introduced to replace the traditional construction method. While the government has been making significant efforts to encourage the IBS adoption, the uptake of IBS in Malaysia construction projects remains low. This study seeks to identify the barriers to the uptake of IBS and to propose the strategies to enhance the implementation IBS in Malaysian housing construction process from the perspectives of consultants. Interviews were conducted with five selected experienced individuals who were working with consultants (civil and structure engineer and quantity surveyor). The results revealed that, lack of knowledge and insufficient skilled workers are the main factors that impede the IBS uptake in Malaysia. Meanwhile, the most strategy proposed by the interviewees is to increase the facilities and incentives in order to expand research and development in IBS.

The construction industry is so fragmented that in its implementation many have resulted in increased costs, delays, and inefficiencies. But this fragmented can not be a reason not to innovate. One approach to the solution used is supply chain construction. The purpose of this study is to map supply chains micro, meso, and macro. This level is tiered from the bottom to the top level as the concept of supply chain management. The qualitative and quantitative research method was used to map and analyze supply chains for each level. The results showed the micro-level is the basis of the supply chain which can be measured by SCOR for example. The meso level focuses on the strength of construction companies. Construction company strategies framework contract and Enterprises Resource Planning (ERP). Macro-level includes supply chain accumulation from micro and meso. It is expected that at the macro level is the harmonization of supply chains between stakeholders, namely the government, contractors, suppliers, and distributors with good policy regulations.

The Malaysian construction industry has lags behind other industries in terms of performance that had drawn the attention to implement innovative construction method like Industrial Building System (IBS). However, the implementation of IBS in Malaysia remains low although the Government had commenced various efforts. The architects have been perceived as the prime mover for construction innovations by integrating their roles as designer, manager, and professional advisor with their strength in design. Therefore, this paper is designed to assess readiness for IBS implementation among organizational members of architectural firms by examining the influence of demographic backgrounds. The study distributes questionnaires to randomly selected respondents who represent firms that are located in highly developed states in Malaysia. Various analysis techniques have been used namely Cronbach’s Alpha coefficients, frequency, mean, standard deviation, one-way ANOVA, and independent samples t-test towards achieving the research objective. The findings disclose that working experience in tender and construction stage (more than 18 years) indicate high likelihood of readiness to implement IBS. This research also reveals that demographic variables (job designation, working experience in design stage, and working experience in tender and construction stage) has significant impacts on the decision maker category, whereas decision maker is the most influential aspect for organizational readiness to implement IBS.

The lack of living space has recently increased particularly in urban centers. This deficiency cannot be remedied with the productivity status quo in the construction industry. One opportunity to significantly increase the productivity of the construction industry is the industrial modular construction. In order to achieve increased productivity, the value chain must act across the entire organization. A supply chain management is required to exploit the potential of the prefabricated construction. In order to develop a specific supply chain management, the corresponding complexity factors along the value chain must be known. The aim of the study is to quantify the essential factors which influence the value chain for prefabricated houses and form a basis for the future development of a supply chain management. The results of this scientific work clearly show that although an industrial modular production is carried out, the highest complexity drivers are still found on the construction site as well as in the logistics from the module production to the construction site. In addition, it is also apparent that special requirements as well as the size of the modules are decisive factors and as such need to be considered during the future development of the supply chain management concept.

Purpose This paper aims to assess the factors favoring the adoption of the challenges faced and support mechanism, which will lead to the proliferation of glass fiber-reinforced gypsum (GFRG) technology in India. Design/methodology/approach Semi-structured interviews with 35 experts, including construction developers, architects, contractors, government officials and design consultants, were conducted. This qualitative data was analyzed using thematic analysis and matrix analysis. Findings GFRG-based buildings produce much less carbon footprints as compared to traditional ones and can be safely recommended as a promising, environmentally sensitive technology of the future. The major drivers in its adoption are its efficient construction capability, energy and soil conservation and significant waste reduction. Some of the challenges in implementation are long planning time, lack of skilled labor, lack of awareness about green building technologies and myopic perception of high cost incurred in green building adoption in people’s minds. Practical implications This study establishes that the construction industry has the potential to contribute toward creating a sustainable and green planet. It does so by evaluating and then positively positioning GFRG as an environmentally friendly building system. Originality/value The harmful effects of continuous environmental manipulation by humans leading to its degradation is a critical discussion agenda for most nations of the world. The issue has been taken up seriously by developing countries, and now, developing countries are also becoming sensitised to it. Several policies toward the attainment of this goal have been formulated and are being implemented by government and private bodies. Although some authors have studied the issues and challenges related to the adoption of green buildings, their attempts mostly focused on developed countries. Moreover, research that investigated the evaluation of the GFRG building system as a successful green technology of the future is inadequate.

Malaysia is making an aggressive effort of transformation to become a fully developed country.  As one of the pillars for transformation, the construction industry has been undergoing a major reform with regard to the traditional method of construction. In recent years, the Industrialised Building System (IBS) has been promoted extensively with the government taking a lead with the practice.  Studies showed that IBS has been able to expedite construction process, improve the time taken to accomplish a project, improve building quality, able to control cost and human resources, which in overall, raise occupational health and safety standard of construction.  Despite, as most IBS projects were carried out under the traditional procurement method, the full benefits of IBS are somehow obscured. Several issues such as work delay, lack of communication and integration, lack of knowledge and an increase in cost, which are synonymous to the traditional procurement method appear to outweigh the benefit of IBS. Hence, this research aims to suggest an alternative to the traditional procurement method with regard to IBS project implementation. The focus of this research has been on the challenges and innovative procurement methods most suited for IBS project. Two objectives were outlined: (1) to identify issues faced by the client on current procurement method in IBS project; and (2) to identify the client’s perspective on innovative procurement method most suited for IBS project. Data for this research was collected through semi-structured interviews with five respondents from five major developers having experience in IBS project implementation. The results from the thematic analysis revealed that apart from the common issues which ascend from the sequential nature of the traditional procurement method, design integration issue was opined to aggravate the situation. Unanimously, respondents agreed that partnering is the way forward for IBS project implementation in the Malaysian construction industry. This research contributes by providing important pointers for the local construction industry to move forward with IBS project implementation.

Purpose: This paper aimed to comprehend the strategy to increase the creative economy during the pandemic, especially about e-commerce and supply chain. Research methodology: This is a review of the literature. This paper used the database in Science Direct and Google Scholar. The keywords used were COVID-19, creative economy, e-commerce, increase, supply chain, and strategy. Results: The effectiveness of the supply chain can be improved by analyzing the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges (SWOT) so that strengths and opportunities can be optimized. E-commerce can be increased by enhancing creativity and innovation. Another way is cooperating with the government and other entrepreneurs. Limitations: This paper is a narrative literature review. There are only a few studies about e-commerce and the supply chain during the COVID-19 pandemic in this paper. Further studies are needed to increase the e-commerce and supply chain for each item and commodities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Contribution: The contribution of this paper is for the creative economy in increasing the effectiveness of supply chains and e-commerce.
