Introduction: Esophageal neoplasia presents a high morbidity and mortality rate, associated with males and the esolist habit. Objective: to describe the profile of esophageal neoplasia related to alcohol consumption between 2015 and 2019 in Montes Claros, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Methods: A descriptive study of quantitative approach was conducted through data from patients diagnosed with esophageal neoplasia in hospital records of the José Alencar Gomes da Silva National Cancer Institute (INCA). Results and discussion: 525 cases of esophageal neoplasia were recorded in the period evaluated. Alcohol consumption was positive in 88.1% of the cases. Conclusion: The data indicate a positive relationship between alcohol consumption and esophageal neoplasia. These data should encourage the establishment of public policies for health education measures in relation to alcohol consumption and smoking habits.

Introduction: Cancer of the oral cavity is a malignant tumor that can occur in the lips, oral structures and region under the tongue. They are cancers that often affect male patients aged 40 years and over. Objective: To describe the clinical and epidemiological profile of patients diagnosed with oral cavity cancer from 2015 to 2019 in Montes Claros, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Methods: A descriptive study of quantitative approach was conducted through data from patients living in Montes Claros, Minas Gerais with diagnosis of oral cavity neoplasia in hospital records of the José Alencar Gomes da Silva National Cancer Institute (INCA). Results and discussion: In the historical series analyzed, 312 cases of cancer of the oral cavity were identified. Conclusion: The patients who were diagnosed with cancer in the oral cavity were mostly men aged between 50 and 69 years, the association between concomitant use of tobacco and alcoholic beverages was present in the vast majority of cases. Health professionals' efforts are needed for early diagnosis through educational actions and primary prevention.

The urgency of this problem is extremely high and is caused by the variety and strength of the negative influence of alcohol consumption both on the destinies of individuals and on the development of our society as a whole, which is confirmed by the results of scientific research. For example, it has been established that the mortality rate among alcoholics is 2-4 times higher than among the general population. Up to 50% of fatal traffic accidents are caused by alcoholic beverages. The morbidity rate among men who abuse alcohol is 1.5 times higher than among the entire male population.

Introduction: Penile cancer are rare neoplasms, being more frequent in men aged 50 years or older, although it may affect men of any age. Unfavorable socioeconomic conditions, poor intimate hygiene, HPV infections, among others, are risk factors for this type of cancer. Objective: To know the profile of penile cancer in patients living in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Methods: A descriptive study of quantitative approach was conducted through data from patients diagnosed with penile cancer in hospital records of the José Alencar Gomes da Silva National Cancer Institute (INCA). Results and discussion: In the period from 2015 to 2019, 573 diagnoses of penile cancer were recorded in the database of the José Alencar Gomes da Silva National Cancer Institute (INCA). Conclusion: Men aged between 50 and 74 years, married, brown and with incomplete high school were identified, the main occupation was agricultural worker. It is essential that in order to face this problem, men's health is considered routinely and systematically in the routine health services.

We investigated the effects of thwarted interpersonal needs and acute alcohol consumption on cognitive and affective responses regarding death, with data from 67 students who were drinkers of alcoholic beverages. Each student was randomly assigned to 1 of 4 groups distinguished by the presence or absence of both thwarted interpersonal needs and acute alcohol consumption. Cognitive priming bias about death-related risk and fearlessness about death were assessed. Results show significant interaction effects between thwarted interpersonal needs and acute alcohol consumption on cognitive priming bias about death-related risk and fearlessness about death. The findings contribute to explaining how acute alcohol consumption can transform individuals' self-aggressive desire into behavior. Therefore, careful clinical assessment of individuals' frustration in interpersonal relationships and their alcohol consumption is required to prevent risks associated with self-aggressive behavior.

The relationship between risk-taking behavior, alcohol consumption and negative alcohol-related consequences is well known. The current analyses were conducted to investigate whether alcohol mixed with energy drink (AMED) is related to risk-taking behavior and if there is a relationship between the amount of energy drink mixed with alcohol consumed, risk-taking behavior and negative alcohol-related consequences. Data from N = 1276 AMED consuming students from the Netherlands, UK and Australia who completed the same survey were evaluated. The analysis revealed that, compared to AMED occasions, on alcohol only (AO) occasions significantly more alcohol was consumed and significantly more negative alcohol-related consequences were reported. On both AO and AMED occasions, there was a strong and positive relationship between amount of alcohol consumed, level of risk-taking behavior and number of reported negative alcohol-related consequences. In contrast, the level of risk-taking behavior was not clearly related to energy drink consumption. Across risk-taking levels, differences in the amount of energy drink consumed on AMED occasions did not exceed one 250 mL serving of energy drink. When correcting for the amount of alcohol consumed, there were no statistically significant differences in the number of energy drinks consumed on AMED occasions between the risk-taking groups. In conclusion, alcohol consumption is clearly related to risk-taking behavior and experiencing negative alcohol-related consequences. In contrast, energy drink intake was not related to level of risk-taking behavior and only weakly related to the number of experienced negative alcohol-related consequences.

Consumers often identify “taste” as an important factor when selecting alcoholic beverages. Although it is assumed that reduced alcohol consumption in PROP super-tasters is due to a greater dislike of the nominally aversive sensations that they experience more intensely (e.g., bitterness) when compared to PROP non-tasters, this question has not been specifically asked to them. Therefore, we examined consumers’ self-reported aversion towards specific sensory attributes (bitter, hot/burn, dry, sour, sweet, carbonation) for four alcoholic beverage types (white wine, red wine, beer, spirits) using a convenience sample of U.S. wine consumers (n = 925). Participants rated 18 statements describing different combinations of sensory attributes and alcoholic beverages on a 5-point Likert scale (e.g., Beer tastes too bitter for me). Individuals who tended to agree more strongly with the statements (i.e., they were more averse; p(F) < 0.05) tended to (i) consume less of all beverage types, (ii) consume a higher proportion of white wine (p(r) < 0.05), and (iii) were more likely to be female or PROP super-tasters. The results suggest that self-reported aversion to specific sensory attributes is associated with not only lower overall intake of alcoholic beverages, but also a shift in the relative proportions of beverage type consumed; a key finding for studies investigating how taste perception impacts alcohol consumption.

Abstract Background Many investigations have shown the important role played by risk factors such as tobacco and alcohol in the development of congenital anomalies. Methods Through the administration of an hoc questionnaire, we evaluated the attitude towards smoking and alcohol of a sample of 200 pregnant women at the University Hospital of Messina. The questionnaire was structured to collect information about socio-demographic characteristics, type of gynaecological assistance and their lifestyles (smoking and alcohol). Statistical analysis was performed using version 10 of StatSoftVR software. Results 14% of the women continued to smoke despite pregnancy; the majority of these were young adults, divorced, employed and with a high educational level. Correlating the smoking habit with the socio-demographic characteristics of the studied women, we found a statistically significant difference for the marital status, with a higher number of smokers among the single women (p &lt; 0.05).Moreover, we found a statistically significant difference also for the profession with a higher number of smokers in the worker women (p &lt; 0.05). About the drinking habit, the 4.3% declared to be moderate drinkers (occasional use of alcohol equal to 2-3 glasses a week) despite pregnancy, the 34.4% stated they do not drink alcohol during pregnancy and the 56% stated do not usually drink alcohol. Particularly, about the drinkers' socio-demographic characteristics, the 50% of them were 24-25 years old and the 75% were married. About the type of alcoholic beverages consumed, 86% stated they usually drink bier during the weekend. Conclusions Our study shows that the awareness of the women about the importance of these risk factors is still rather poor. In order to improve the awareness of pregnant women on the importance of avoiding these risk factors and prevent CAs, health education campaigns at various levels surely represent the public health cornerstone. Key messages In our sample 14% of the pregnant women continued to smoke and 4.3% to drink despite pregnancy and they generally were young or young adults and with a high educational level. Our results highlight the importance of continuous health education about the risk to smoke and drink during pregnancy.

The study analyzes the trend in frequency of adults who drive under the influence of alcohol in major Brazilian cities after the passing of laws, which prohibit drunk driving. Data from the Surveillance System for Risk and Protective Factors for Chronic Diseases by Telephone Survey (VIGITEL) between 2007 and 2013 were analyzed. The frequency of adults who drove after abusive alcohol consumption was reduced by 45.0% during this period (2.0% in 2007 to 1.1% in 2013). Between 2007 and 2008 (-0.5%) and between 2012 and 2013 (-0.5%), significant reductions were observed in the years immediately after the publication of these laws that prohibit drunk driving. These improvements towards the control of drunk driving show a change in the Brazilian population’s lifestyle.

Objective To determine the functional morbidity and mortality after fragility hip fracture and compare the mortality with three other common diseases. Methods Data were collected from patients admitted to King Fahd Hospital of the University, AlKhobar from January 2010 to December 2014. Demographic data included the preoperative American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score as assessed by the anesthetist and the type of surgery. Personal and telephone interviews were performed, and data were entered into a database and analyzed. Results We identified 203 patients with fragility proximal femoral fractures, and the data of 189 patients (109 male, 80 female; average age, 66.90 ± 13.43 years) were available for analysis. The overall mortality rate was 26.98% (51 patients). The mortality rate was significantly higher among patients with an ASA score of 4 (36.36%) than 1 (20.45%). With respect to morbidity, only 48.23% of patients were able to return to their pre-fracture status; 32.35% of those who required assisted walking and 83.4% of those who required a wheelchair became bedridden. Conclusions Our data demonstrate that patients with fragility hip fractures have high morbidity and a mortality rate approaching 30%. Age and the ASA score significantly influence this high mortality rate.
