The nutritional and epidemiological transitions have affected the Algerians’ lifestyle primarily in their nutritional status, eating behavior, and health status. Overweight and obesity, being present at all ages of life, includes several factors related to the risk of developing, at an older age, non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The nutritional situation of children under 5 years remains a concern of low birth weight, low prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding, stunting growth, and underweight. Nutritional deficiencies, mainly in micronutrients, persist in different age groups, especially in pregnant and lactating women reflecting the consequences of a poor diet characterized by low consumption of fruits and vegetables, and higher consumption of fatty products as well as sweet with high-calorie density. The issue of food and nutritional security remains an important issue. Despite the persistent nutritional problems, the level of food security indicators shows that the country is not exposed to food insecurity, but dependency on food imports remains quite high. The living conditions in rural areas must be improved in order to strengthen the agricultural sector which must be able to meet the needs of the population. Updating and analyzing the nutritional situation using existing data will enable the strategies put in place by national and international organizations to be implemented. : This study aimed to describe the nutritional status and dietary patterns of Cambodian school-aged children compared with those in the South East Asian Nutrition Survey (SEANUTS; Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam in 2011) and to clarify the urban-rural differences using data from a nationally representative sample. The survey was conducted in 2014/2015 with a sample of 2020 children aged 6–17 years from 136 randomly selected schools. Standardized anthropometric measurements and a 1-day dietary survey by 24-hour recall method were conducted. Extended analyses in the present study revealed that the difference between rural and urban areas was similar to that of the SEANUTS; the overall prevalence of stunting remained high (33.2%). Stunting was more prevalent in children living in rural areas than in those in urban areas (total: 36.4% vs 20.4%). In contrast, the overall prevalence of overweight and obesity was not as high (3.1%), but was higher among urban children in all age groups compared with those living in rural areas (total: 6.4% vs 2.3%). Overall, the dietary intake of children did not meet the local recommended dietary allowances, which was similar to the results of the SEANUTS and differed across urban and rural areas.

Globally, the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is rising. To assess the trends in the age of occurrence of non-communicable, age-related diseases this study was performed in the three districts of Uttarakhand, in both rural and the urban settings. The study comprised of both male and female subjects between the age group of 15 years to 55 onwards. The respondents were categorized into three age groups range as- 15-35 years, 36-55 years, and above 56 years. Starting from the age of 5 years, each age group is also categorized decade-wise e.g. age group of 56 years and above was divided into six decades starting from the age of five years.  The present study showed that the occurrence of age-related diseases, among the age group 56 years and above, was seen during their 40s while in the other two age groups, occurrence was recorded in the 30s itself. Comparing the third decade, i.e., the 30s of all the three age groups, none of the subjects was suffering from age-related disease among 56 years and above while among 36-55 years of age, 0.57 percent and among 15-35 years of age, 1.35 percent of subjects suffered from hypertension. The occurrence of these diseases was more in the urban areas as compared to rural areas. These results throw an insight onto the necessity for government bodies to focus on key factors leading to this trend, improving health care quality, and emphasis on a healthy lifestyle.

These day the number of school-age children who suffer from obesity has doubled compared to 2010. Children who are obese tend to remain obese in adulthood and are at risk of suffering from various non-communicable diseases such as heart and blood vessel disease, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and others. Based on these conditions in an effort to prevent obesity early which is one of the factors causing non-communicable diseases, it is necessary to check the nutritional status of high school students who are classified as adolescents. Activities include data collection on student identity, snack food patterns, types of snacks, and daily student activities and followed by measurements of body weight, height, and waist circumference to get an overview of the nutritional status of students. This dedication activity involved the Tarumanagara University Faculty of Medicine students. The results of the examination found that most of the 48 students and 37 students who had been assessed for nutritional status experienced height based on age (TB / U) within normal limits. As many as 34.1% of adolescents are overweight and overweight. The percentage of overweight and obesity in adolescents is quite large compared to nationally, urban, or in DKI Jaya. The mean waist circumference (Lp) 31.25% of male adolescents were found to be above the normal limit indicating excess fat in the abdominal area, while the average Lp of adolescent girls was still within normal limits. In terms of daily activities which are one of the factors causing obesity, 67.1% of adolescents engage in sports activities, but many hours are also used to use gadgets, which are about five hours per day. Most (94.1%) of adolescents consume various kinds of snacks including biscuits, chips, nuts, and fruit. Based on the results obtained, it is necessary to assess nutritional status regularly and also counseling about a healthy lifestyle.ABSTRAK:Dewasa ini jumlah anak umur sekolah yang menderita obesitas mengalami peningkatan dua kali lipat dibandingkan tahun 2010. Anak-anak yang obes cenderung untuk tetap obes di umur dewasa  dan berisiko menderita berbagai penyakit tidak menular seperti penyakit jantung dan pembuluh darah, sindrom metabolik, diabetes, dan sebagainya. Berdasarkan keadaan tersebut dalam upaya pencegahan secara dini terjadinya obesitas yang merupakan salah satu faktor penyebab penyakit tidak menular, perlu dilakukan pemeriksaan status gizi pada siswa siswi sekolah menengah atas yang merupakan tergolong umur remaja. Kegiatan meliputi pendataan identitas siswa, pola makanan cemilan, jenis cemilan, dan aktifitas siswa sehari-hari dan dilanjutkan dengan pengukuran berat badan, tinggi badan dan lingkar pinggang untuk mendapatkan gambaran status gizi siswa. Kegiatan pengabdian ini melibatkan mahasiswa Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Tarumanagara. Hasil pemeriksaan didapatkan bahwa sebagian besar dari 48 siswa dan 37 siswi yang telah dilakukan penilaian status gizi mengalami tinggi badan berdasarkan umur (TB/U) dalam batas normal. Sebanyak 34,1% remaja mengalami berat badan berlebih dan kegemukan. Persentase kelebihan berat badan dan obesitas pada remaja ini cukup besar dibandingkan secara nasional, perkotaan ataupun di DKI Jaya. Rerata lingkar pinggang (Lp) 31,25% remaja laki-laki didapatkan sudah di atas batas normal yang menunjukkan adanya kelebihan lemak di daerah perut, sedangkan rerata Lp remaja perempuan masih dalam batas normal. Ditinjau dari aktivitas sehari-hari yang merupakan salah satu fator penyebab kegemukan didapatkan sebesar 67,1% remaja melakukan aktivitas olah raga, namun tidak sedikit juga waktu yang digunakan untuk menggunakan gadget yaitu sekitar lima jam per hari. Sebagian besar (94,1%) remaja mengonsumsi bermacam macam cemilan meliputi biskuit, chips, kacang dan buah. Berdasarkan hasil yang didapat perlu dilakukan penilaian status gizi secara rutin dan juga penyuluhan tentang gaya hidup yang sehat.

Introduction: Obesity has been associated with a higher risk of morbidity, disability, and death. The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of obesity and chosen non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the PURE Poland cohort study. Material and Methods: The study covers a group of 2035 people (1281 women and 754 men), who live in urban and rural areas of Lower Silesian voivodeship. The baseline study was conducted between 2007–2010. The data on demographic status and history of diseases were collected using questionnaires. The anthropometric parameters, blood pressure, blood lipids, and glucose level were measured. Results: Normal body weight was observed in 28.1% of participants, whereas overweight and obesity were observed in 40.1% and 31.1% of participants, respectively. Moreover, there was a significant difference in the body weight between genders. Prevalence of obesity was similar in men and women (31.0% and 31.1%, respectively). Obesity was more prevalent in rural vs. urban residents (38.5% and 26.0%, respectively). In a logistic regression analysis, the odds for obesity was two-fold higher in participants aged >64 years and rural inhabitants (OR 1.91; 95% CI 1.36–2.70; OR 1.79; 95% CI 1.48–2.16, respectively). Participants with obesity had 2.5-fold higher odds for diabetes and hypertension and two-fold higher odds for CHD in comparison with non-obese individuals (OR 2.74; 95% CI 2.01–3.73, OR 2.54; 95% CI 2.03–3.17, OR 1.88; 95% CI 1.26–2.80, respectively). Conclusions: Taken together, the prevalence of obesity was associated with particular socio-demographic factors (age, place of residence, and level of education) as well as diabetes, hypertension, and coronary heart disease.

The general perception of nutrition is that it is just the process of taking food. However, it represents food science that ultimately relates to human health. Unhealthy and imbalanced food and the modern lifestyle are contributing to non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in recent days. Hypertension, diabetes and cancer are some major NCDs across the world that have created challenges for human life. Annually, millions of people die due to the food related problems. The major objective of the study is to analyze the health status of non-communicable diseases among Nepali women. This study emphasizes the counseling and modification of diet that are crucial in controlling non-communicable illness. This study is based on the secondary data and review of literature. All these data were reviewed through journals, research articles, books, and the association’s dietary guidelines. The reports by WHO, Nepal Demographic Health Survey, American Heart Association, American Lung Association and National Institute of Diabetes are also reviewed. The experience of working in this field for a long time has also been utilized in analyzing the data. A number of NCDs is being increased globally and Nepal is no exception. The WHO report of 2018 reveals that NCDs are killing 41 million people yearly, equivalent to 71% of all death globally. Similarly, 15 million people die from it between 30 and 69 age groups, and 85% of these 'premature' deaths in low and middle-income countries. According to NDHS (2016), the prevalence of hypertension in women in Nepal is 17% of those aged 15 and above. Alter food habits, overweight and obesity as well as food practices during pregnancy, after delivery and daily intake of convenience fast food in Tiffin and snacks are some reasons to increase the NCDs. Nutrition counselling and awareness, dietary policy guidelines and an active role of diet specialist (dietician/nutritionist) will be the effective mitigation in controlling the NCDs number.

(1) Background: The prevalence of overweight and obesity among children has increased tremendously in the ASEAN region, including Malaysia. In Malaysia, the National Strategic Plan for Non-Communicable Diseases (2015–2025) provides the overall framework for its response to the non-communicable diseases (NCD) epidemic. Preventing childhood obesity is one of the key strategies for early intervention to prevent NCDs. The objective of this research is to examine the current status of policy interventions in addressing childhood obesity in Malaysia. (2) Methods: A panel of 22 stakeholders and experts from Malaysia, representing the government, industry, academia and non-governmental organizations, were sampled using a modified Delphi technique. Data were collected using a modified NCD scorecard under four domains (governance, risk factors, surveillance and research and health systems response). A heat map was used to measure the success of the four realms of the NCD scorecard. For each domain of the NCD scorecard, the final score was grouped in quintiles. (3) Results: A total of 22 participants responded, comprising of eight (36.4%) males and 14 (63.4%) females. All the domains measured in implementing policies related to childhood obesity were of low progress. Nine governance indicators were reported as 22.5% (low progress), four in the risk factors domain, and two in the surveillance. This shows that timely and accurate monitoring, participatory review and evaluation, and effective remedies are necessary for a country’s surveillance system. (4) Conclusion: Although Malaysia has published several key strategic documents relating to childhood obesity and implemented numerous policy interventions, we have identified several gaps that must be addressed to leverage the whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach in addressing childhood obesity in the country.

Abstract Background The changes generated in the studentś lifestyle due to the academic demands, may favour the prevalence of risk factors for non-communicable diseases as well as compromise other domains of their life. The purpose of this study was to establish the prevalence of behavioural risk factors in students of the Professional in Physical Activity and Sports program of a University in Bucaramanga, Colombia. Methods A cross-sectional study with a sample of 189 students was conducted. The students were surveyed with the first step of the STEPs questionnaire, which evaluates the behavioural risk factors for non-communicable diseases. A descriptive data analysis was performed, and Pearson tests were applied to determine the correlation between the analysed variables with a level of significance α = 0.05 using STATA 13.0. Results 80% of the participants were men. The age average was 22.7 ± 3.85 years. Regarding tobacco use, 10.1% of the participants were current smokers, while 30% smoked before. The majority of the participants (92.2%) have consumed alcohol within the past 12 months, while 69.8% consumed alcohol within the last month, with 8.7% of hazardous drinking. Concerning the diet, only 24.9% met the recommended consumption of fruits and vegetables per day. When assessing physical activity levels, only 6.3% were classified as physically inactive. Additionally, an average of 6 hours of sedentary behaviour was found, with 31.2% of excessive sedentary time. A weak correlation was found between age and academic cycle with the amount of physical activity at work (r = 0.24), (r = 0.18) and with sedentary time (r = -0.28), (-0, 32). Conclusions Although the prevalence of tobacco consumption was slightly higher than the national average, the students showed a lower prevalence of behavioural risk factors than the general population. However, it is necessary to promote strategies aimed at the control and prevention of these risk factors. Key messages Being a student of a program focused on physical activity and sport, can behave as a protective factor against the most prevalent risk factors in university life. It is necessary to implement more strategies centred on making students aware of the importance of the maintenance and improvement of their lifestyles in accordance with their professional profile.

This study aims to find spatial clusters of diabetes and physical inactivity among a sample population in Kerala, India, and evaluate built environment characteristics within the high and low spatial clusters. Spatial clusters with a higher and lower likelihood of diabetes and physical inactivity were identified using spatial scan statistic at various radii. Built environment characteristics were captured at panchayat level and 1600 m buffer around participant location using Geographical Information Systems. Comparison of sociodemographic and built environment factors was carried out for participants within high and low spatial clusters using t tests. Ten high and 8 low spatial clusters of diabetes and 17 high and 23 low spatial clusters of physical inactivity were identified in urban and rural areas of Kerala. Significant differences in built environment characteristics were consistent for low spatial clusters of diabetes and physical inactivity in the urban scenario. Built environment characteristics were found to be relevant in both urban and rural areas of Kerala. There is an urgent call to explore spatial clustering of non-communicable diseases in Kerala and undo the one-size-fits-all approach for prevention and control of non-communicable diseases.
