Chilling stress at booting stage can cause floret deterioration and sterility by limiting the supply of food chain and the accumulation of essential mineral elements resulting in reduction of yield and grain quality attributes in rice. Genomic selection of chilling tolerant rice with reference to the accumulation of mineral elements will have great potential to cope with malnutrition and food security in times of climate change. Therefore, a study was conducted to explore the genomic determinants of cold tolerance and mineral elements content in near-isogenic lines (NILs) of japonica rice subjected to chilling stress at flowering stage. Detailed morphological analysis followed by quantitative analysis of 17 mineral elements revealed that the content of phosphorus (P, 3,253 mg/kg) and potassium (K, 2,485 mg/kg) were highest while strontium (Sr, 0.26 mg/kg) and boron (B, 0.34 mg/kg) were lowest among the mineral elements. The correlation analysis revealed extremely positive correlation of phosphorus (P) and copper (Cu) with most of the cold tolerance traits. Among all the effective ear and the second leaf length correlation was significant with half of the mineral elements. As a result of comparative analysis, some QTLs (qBRCC-1, qBRCIC-2, qBRZC-6, qBRCHC-6, qBRMC-6, qBRCIC-6a, qBRCIC-6b, qBRCHC-6, and qBRMC-6) identified for calcium (Ca), zinc (Zn), chromium (Cr) and magnesium (Mg) on chromosome number 1, 2, and 6 while, a novel QTL (qBCPC-1) was identified on chromosome number 1 for P element only. These findings provided bases for the identification of candidate genes involved in mineral accumulation and cold tolerance in rice at booting stage.

Power spectrum analysis of the diaphragm electromyogram (EMGdi) is time consuming, and no criteria have been developed to objectively quantify contamination of the signal. The present work describes a set of computer algorithms that automatically select EMGdi free of the electrocardiogram and numerically quantify the common artifacts that affect the EMGdi. The algorithms were tested 1) on human EMGdi (n = 5) obtained with esophageal electrodes positioned at the level of the gastroesophageal junction, 2) on EMGdi obtained in mongrel dogs (n = 5) with intramuscular electrodes in the costal diaphragm, and 3) on computer-simulated power spectra. For authentic and simulated power spectra, indexes were obtained by the algorithms and were able to quantify signal disturbances induced by noise, electrode motion, esophageal peristalsis (in humans), and non-QRS complex-related electrocardiogram activity. With the index inclusion thresholds set to levels that allowed for a high signal acceptance rate with relatively small artifact-induced fluctuations (10–15%) of the EMGdi center frequency, the computer algorithms were found to be as reliable as or more reliable than other methods, including careful visual selection of the time domain signals by experienced analysts. In conclusion, the frequency domain application of computer algorithms offers a reliable and reproducible means to objectively quantify the sources that contaminate the interference pattern EMG.

AbstractSpectral lines of the ΔV=2 rotation vibration bands of CO are well suited for study of photospheric motions and the mass ejection process in cool stars. We have obtained high spectral resolution (1.8 km/sec) and high signal-to-noise (>102) line profiles for a selection of K and M giants. These profiles are being studied for evidence of gas motions in the photosphere and near circumstellar regions.

Abstract Brassica vegetables are important sources of dietary minerals. However, information on the inheritance and correlation for content of mineral elements such as iron, zinc, copper, manganese, potassium, and calcium in cabbage, which is essential if the quality of this vegetable is to be improved through breeding, is not available. Therefore, the experiment was set up with seventy-one cabbage genotypes including cultivars, germplasm and F1 hybrids grown in field. Mineral composition of the genotypes tested differed highly significantly indicating the presence of adequate amount of variability. A high heritability (>80%) accompanied by high genetic advance as percentage of mean (>40%) for uptake and accumulation of Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn and Ca indicates the predominance of additive gene, which could be improved by hybridization followed by selection breeding approach. Nevertheless, heterosis breeding would be an imperative in increasing the K content in cabbage heads as indicated by non-additive gene action for K accumulation having high heritability (>80%) and low genetic advance as percentage of mean (<30%). Moreover, both additive and non-additive genes were responsible for individual head weight. A positive correlation for Fe, Zn and Mn contents with other minerals will help in simultaneous selection of mineral elements. Nevertheless, major yield contributing ‘head weight’ was negatively correlated with minerals content and emphasized the selection of smaller head size to maintain the higher minerals content in tissues of cabbage heads. Hence, assessing the heritability, inheritance and correlation for minerals would be useful in the developing mineral-rich and productive genotypes.

As antibiotic pressure often triggers bacterial resistance, the use of short-duration therapies is increasingly recommended. The objective of the present study was to evaluate both the clinical efficiency and the impact on oral streptococci of a 3 day versus a 7 day amoxicillin therapy for odontogenic infection requiring tooth extraction. On day 0, patients were randomly assigned to a 3 day or 7 day amoxicillin treatment. The tooth was extracted on day 2 and the post-operative follow-up was carried out on day 9. Oral flora was collected on days 0, 9 and 30, and the susceptibility of the streptococci to amoxicillin was determined. The results showed that treatment with amoxicillin for 3 or 7 days had a similar clinical efficiency, and also induced similar selection of oral streptococci with reduced susceptibility to amoxicillin, suggesting that the selection of strains with reduced susceptibility to amoxicillin is a rapid phenomenon, appearing even with short-duration therapies.

Several cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYPs) encoded in the genome of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) are considered potential new drug targets due to the essential roles they play in bacterial viability and in the establishment of chronic intracellular infection. Identification of inhibitors of Mtb CYPs at present is conducted by ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) optical titration experiments or by metabolism studies using endogenous substrates, such as cholesterol and lanosterol. The first technique requires high enzyme concentrations and volumes, while analysis of steroid hydroxylation is dependent on low-throughput analytical methods. Luciferin-based luminogenic substrates have proven to be very sensitive substrates for the high-throughput profiling of inhibitors of human CYPs. In the present study, 17 pro-luciferins were evaluated as substrates for Mtb CYP121A1, CYP124A1, CYP125A1, CYP130A1, and CYP142A1. Luciferin-BE was identified as an excellent probe substrate for CYP130A1, resulting in a high luminescence yield after addition of luciferase and adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Its applicability for high-throughput screening was supported by a high Z’-factor and high signal-to-background ratio. Using this substrate, the inhibitory properties of a selection of known inhibitors could be characterized using significantly less protein concentration when compared to UV-vis optical titration experiments. Although several luminogenic substrates were also identified for CYP121A1, CYP124A1, CYP125A1, and CYP142A1, their relatively low yield of luminescence and low signal-to-background ratios make them less suitable for high-throughput screening since high enzyme concentrations will be needed. Further structural optimization of luminogenic substrates will be necessary to obtain more sensitive probe substrates for these Mtb CYPs.

In research, experiments must be performed at pre-determined levels of the controllable factors, meaning that an experimental design must be selected prior to experimentation. Once an experimenter has chosen a polynomial model of suitable order, the problem arises on how best to choose the settings for the independent variables over which he has control. A particular selection of settings or factor levels at which observations are to be taken is called a design. A design may become inappropriate under special circumstances requiring an increase in factors or levels to make it more desirable. In agriculture for instance, continuous cultivation of crops may exhaust previously available mineral elements necessitating a sequential appendage of the mineral elements which become deficient in the soil over time. In this study, a fifty six points third order rotatable design is constructed by adding a set of factors to a second order  rotatable design in four dimensions and a practical hypothetical example is given by converting coded level to natural levels.  This design permits a response surface to be fitted easily and provide spherical information contours besides the economic use of scarce resources in relevant production processes.

The qualitative composition and quantitative content of mineral elements and vitamins in the grapes of local varieties of Muscat Peitel, Salam, Yai pink raisins, growing in southern Dagestan, are studied. The elemental composition is determined by the methods of flame and atomic absorption photometry; ascorbic acid - titrimetry; rutin, nicotinic acid and carotene - colorimetry. A certain correlation of minerals and vitamins has been found, and it is crucial at selection of grapes, aimed at high nutritional value. The obtained results can be useful at the correct selection and placement of the varieties with the optimal combination of micronutrients to provide the Republic with table grapes of good quality.

Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer is a practicable solution to encourage energy-constrained relay nodes to cooperate with the source to transmit information to the destination. In this paper, we study the outage performance of hybrid protocol based amplify-and-forward (AF) relay networks over asymmetric fading channels, where the source-relay link and the relay-destination link are subjected to Rician fading and Rayleigh fading, respectively. In particular, we derive the lower bound of outage probability and the upper bound of outage capacity based on a high signal-to-noise ratio approximation, respectively. We further investigate the effects of various system parameters, such as the parameters of hybrid protocol, the target rate, and the Rician K-factor, on the investigated network. It is shown that a good selection of parameters of hybrid protocol is of significance to improve system capacity, and that a larger Rician factor is desirable in the investigated network.

The leafy vegetables contain high amount of mineral elements and health promoting compound. To solve nutritional problems in diet and reduced malnutrition among human population selection of specific cultivar among species would be help increasing elemental delivery in the human diet. While rocket plant observes several nutritional compounds no significant efforts have been made for genetic diversity for mineral composition of rocket plant accessions using multivariate analyses technique. The objective of this work was to evaluate variability for mineral accumulation of rocket accessions revealed by multivariate analysis to use further breeding program for achieve improving cultivar in targeting high nutrient concentration. A total twelve mineral element and twenty-three E. sativa accessions were investigated and considerable variation were observed in the most of concentration the principal component analysis explained that 77.67% of total variation accounted for four PC axis. Rocket accessions were classifies into three groups and present outcomes of experiments revealed that the first three principal components were highly valid to classify the examined accessions and separating mineral accumulations. Significant differences exhibited in mineral concentration among examined rocket accessions and the result could allow selecting those genotypes with higher elements.
