The homestay business has contributed to the development of the tourism industry, and it has revitalized tourism resources and boosted the tourism economy. This article takes the Mogan Mountain homestay agglomeration of Yangtze River Delta, the most developed and actively invested in business in the industry, as a research site focus to discuss the recent trends in the Chinese homestay business. Standard deviational ellipse analysis, spatial analysis of nearest-neighbor, and density are empirically tested with the data from the inn/homestay channel of Qunar.com, which is a widely acclaimed website with high page views. Based on the above researches, this paper uses the standard deviation ellipse analysis, the nearest neighbor analysis, and the kernel density estimation analysis method to explore the development characteristics of the Mogan Mountain homestay agglomeration. Combined with the Butler tourist destination life cycle model, it can be concluded that the Mogan Mountain homestay agglomeration area experienced a stage of initial development (2007–2011) and rapid development (2012–2015) and now is in a mature development stage (2016 up to now). This study proposes five actors: physical geographical conditions, traffic location conditions, tourism self-organization mechanism, policy influence, and community residents’ willingness to develop and significantly drive the evolution of Mogan Mountain homestay agglomeration. The formation and evolution of the Mogan Mountain homestay agglomeration are the results of the accumulation of resource-driven effect, scale effect, and differentiation effect at different stages. The unique organization and incentive mechanism promote regional sustainable development.

The practical significance. The study of issues within the framework of cultural tourism requires the use of an interdisciplinary approach, which acquires its clear features when choosing a subject of study. The interaction of culture and tourism, the cultural trajectories of modern tourism serve as a structure for analyzing the construction of identity and multiculturalism. Socio-cultural practices of modern tourism, developing in the context of global processes, have provided opportunities to systematically analyze and identify ways of positive practical implementation of its explicit and implicit opportunities. The material culture of the industrial age in the conditions of rapid development of the information society is considered as a historical resource that needed to be preserved and reused, and as a new direction of development of the tourism industry. Cultural tourism has become the main segment in most tourist destinations, but recently the focus has shifted from a purely quantitative increase in demand for the consumption of cultural and attractions to qualitative changes in the nature of this demand, which is based on the inherent desire to see and know parts of the world. In the modern literature on culture emphasizes its material component (buildings, structures, artifacts, works of art, etc.) and its elusive part (traditions, norms of behavior, beliefs, ideas, symbols, language, etc.). In this regard, for anyone, cultural tourism is not just an opportunity to get acquainted with some object of culture, but also to understand its interpretation, to learn new meanings through the environment, to assess the context (feel the atmosphere of the place), in other words, learn about the culture of the place and its inhabitants.

Tourism forecasting has been a focal point of tourism research over the past few decades as a result of the corresponding rapid development and expansion of the tourism industry. A bibliometric analysis, based on 543 articles retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database, was carried out to provide insights into hot topics as well as emerging trends in tourism forecasting research. The results show that the research outputs related to tourism forecasting have grown rapidly since 2006. The observed hot topics in tourism forecasting were to predict tourism demand via various models, including time series models, econometric models, and artificial intelligence-based methods, and to compare the forecasting accuracy of models. An emerging trend of tourism forecasting is to use methods based on data from a web-based search engine. Our study provides insights and valuable information for researchers to identify new perspectives on hot topics and research frontiers.

Tourism culture is the key resource by which the tourism industry of a region survives. This study analyzed the cultural perception image of Wuxi among tourists by using content analysis techniques, such as word frequency analysis, semantic network analysis, and sentiment analysis based on the tourist reviews on major tourism websites. The results showed that tourists’ perceptions of local tourism culture in Wuxi are mainly focused on religious culture, landscape and garden culture, and historical culture. Further analysis revealed an obvious structural mismatch between the tourists’ perceptions and the supply of local cultural tourism resources. The findings suggest that the focus should be on the clustered development of tourism culture in Wuxi, the branding of Wu Culture, and the strengthening of the association between scenic spots in the future.

While empowering the revitalization of Chinese historic districts, the rapid development of the tourism industry may also endanger local cultures and streetscapes. To achieve the goal of sustainable development and find an approach for the Chinese historic districts to develop tourism while taking into account landscape conservation, district management, and living convenience, this paper uses expert interviews (including in-depth and Modified Delphi interviews) and structural observation to explore redefining Chinese historic districts and cultural tourism attractiveness in order to provide a hierarchical framework. The research results reveal: 1. The respective redefinitions of a Chinese historic district and cultural tourism attractiveness; 2. A hierarchical framework for the cultural tourism attractiveness of Chinese historic districts, using two aspects—the physical environment and the cultural and natural environments—and five criteria including the morphology of the landscape and tourism infrastructure, along with 21 elements, including the natural and cultural landscapes. This research is expected to provide a theoretical reference for the planning and management of tourism and landscapes in Chinese historic districts.
