Statistical knowledge for teaching is not precisely equivalent to statistics subject matter knowledge. Teachers must know how to make statistics understandable to others as well as understand the subject matter themselves. This dual demand on teachers calls for the development of viable teacher education models. This paper offers one such model, which relies upon engaging teachers in design-based research. Teachers collaborate with a researcher to design, implement, and analyze instruction to pursue desired statistical learning outcomes for students. The researcher allows teachers enough autonomy to make and learn from mistakes during the process. Unpacking and addressing the mistakes has value as a means of teacher learning. The model and a specific instance of its implementation are described along with reflections on how productive mistakes during design-based research provide opportunities for fostering the development of statistical knowledge for teaching. This study seeks to describe the subject matter knowledge needed for teaching statistical association at the secondary level. Taking a practice-based qualitative approach, three experienced teachers were observed as they taught statistical association and interviewed immediately following each observation. Records of practice were assembled to create a compilation document to recreate each of the fifty observed class sessions along with related materials including textbook pages and student work. Analysis of the compilation documents focused on the demands upon teachers’ subject matter knowledge involved in the practice of teaching. Findings regarding the knowledge required for teaching correlation coefficient are highlighted, including its computation, interpretation, sensitivity, estimation, and related terminology. The African American actor, writer, and director Spencer Williams, Jr. (1895–1969) has been the subject of a range of academic studies in recent years. Scholars have explored his pioneering work in early black film and his problematic role as “Andy Hogg Brown” in the television version of the Amos 'n' Andy radio program as a means of interpreting representations of black life within the confines of the Hollywood culture industry. This new scholarship, however, has reflected a limited and often inaccurate understanding of Williams' remarkable career. As will be discussed in this article, major events in Williams' life that have been unknown until now strongly influenced his filmmaking and his strategies to make the movie and television industries more racially inclusive. Most significantly, Williams was at different times a soldier in a segregated army unit, a convicted felon, and a committed artist and activist in Hollywood. These experiences helped to shape the themes and subject matter of his films, which ranged from religious dramas and singing cowboy westerns to backstage musicals and the first African American horror movie ever made.

Jessie Auger

In this essay, Jessie L. Auger reflects on the practice of Buddy Editing in her first-grade classroom as an opportunity for student and teacher learning. By explicitly revealing her pedagogical approach and sharing transcripts of students' engagement with her Buddy Editing protocol, Auger presents the dynamics of a learning partnership that exists among teachers and students and between students. She offers a glimpse of what happens in one classroom when the teacher focuses on providing students with the appropriate tools, environment, structure, and access to the subject matter; trusts students to enact their own agency as learners; and takes a reflective stance on improving her practice based on lessons from student practice.

The present study investigates the processes of how German middle school students (age 14) interpret, contrast and evaluate different (informal) statistical measures in order to summarise and compare frequency distributions. To trace the developing insights into the properties of these measures, this paper uses the ‘emergent modelling’ perspective: measures are understood as models, which can either be used to make sense of a given situation or to reason about the statistical measures themselves, e.g. in terms of when they can be applied adequately. The emergent modelling approach is used (1) as a theoretical framework for describing students’ conceptual development, and (2) as a design heuristic for developing a teaching-learning arrangement aiming at developing insights about (frequency) distributions and statistical measures. In the qualitative analysis of a design experiment, two students’ emerging contextual and statistical knowledge is identified, revealing the intertwined nature of both types of knowledge. Overall, this paper illustrates the important role the emergent modelling perspective can play for designing as well as describing students’ learning pathways in statistics education. This study aims to determine the effect of using the conflict cognitive strategies on students' cognitive learning achievements. This research is an experimental study using one group pretest-posttest design. The research sample was 35 students of class X MIPA 7 at SMAN 2 Mataram. The conflict cognitive strategies are conditioned in research on the subject matter of Regular Straight Motion and Regular Changed Straight Motion. Measurement of cognitive learning outcomes using test instruments and given to students as pretest and posttest. The test instrument was previously validated by 2 (two) validators on the content and construct aspects. The validation results show that the test instrument has been declared valid on the content and construct aspects with a validity (Va) level of 4.12 and 4.00. The results showed that students' cognitive learning achievements improved after learning using the conflict cognitive strategies (mean of 3.49) significant (p <0.05). These results are also supported by the results of n-gain analysis of cognitive learning achievements of students after learning with a value of 0.74 with a high category so that it is declared effective to improve students' cognitive learning achievements.
