Gender Differences in Personality Traits in Relation to Academic Performance

The study attempted to explore the impact of personality traits on academic performance with regards to gender differences. A primary study was conducted on a sample size of 666 students (453 males and 213 females). Using Mann-Whitney analysis, it was found that different personality traits impact the academic performance of students for both boys and girls. Extraversion, Conscientiousness Agreeableness and Emotional Stability were found to influence the academic performance of male students. On the other hand, Openness influenced the academic performance of female students. Conscientiousness was the only trait to influence the academic performance of both male as well as female students.

Smoking and alcohol consumption is a growing trend among young people worldwide. The purpose of this study was to provide students with a comparative analysis of adherence to harmful habits (smoking and alcohol) on the one hand and the frequency of sports and academic performance on the other, taking into account gender differences. The research was conducted in 2019-2020 in 5 cities of Russia; the sample included 1500 people aged 18.4 ± 1.1 years, divided into three equal groups. The control (first) group had students who are not engaged in sports, and the second group comprised students practicing sports but not professionally. The third group was made up of student-athletes. All participants were surveyed to determine the frequency of adherence to harmful habits. In the control group, boys smoked 50% more often than girls (p ≤ 0.05), while in the third group, smoking among boys was registered 70 times less often (p ≤ 0.001). Alcohol consumption in controls was 0.5 times more likely among boys (p ≤ 0.05). Harmful habits affect young people's free time and reduce their academic performance and ability to practice sports.

Background and Study Aim. Physical activity (PA) is regarded as a critical component of a healthy lifestyle and disease prevention. Different constraints placed upon social interaction and public spaces due to COVID-19 could decrease PA and academic performance in physical education (PE) in student population. The purpose of the research was to assess overall and sport/fitness PA level and academic performance in PE in a sample of university students pre- to post-cancellation of face-to-face PE classes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Material and Methods. Participants (n=209) – university students (19-20 years old). The overall period of the research is September-December 2020. All participants (male–n=106 and female–n=103) were divided into approximately equal groups: humanities students (male–MG-1, female–FG-1), medicine students (male–MG-2, female–FG-2), technical students (male–MG-3, female–FG-3). The main research tools: modified student self-reported questionnaire (on the base of IPAQ), academic grading (scores for self-completed PE tasks). In surveys, all participants self-rated overall and sport/fitness PA level pre- to post-cancellation of face-to-face PE classes. The participants had to complete 32 special PE tasks, during the research period. PE teachers rated participants by a special grading scale. Results. For the male and female students’ groups there were no significant differences of overall PA, sport/fitness PA level and academic performance in PE pre-cancellation of face-to-face PE classes. All participants significantly (p≤0.05) decreased overall PA, sport/fitness PA level and academic performance in PE post-cancellation. There was a significant (p≤0.05) large amount of overall PA level in MG-2 students and sport/fitness PA level in MG-1 students’ post-cancellation of face-to-face PE classes. For the male students there were no significant differences of grading in PE pre- to post-cancellation of face-to-face PE classes between participants groups. There was a significant (p≤0.05) large amount of overall PA level post-cancellation of face-to-face PE classes in FG-2 students. There was a significantly (p≤0.05) lower amount of sport/fitness PA level post-cancellation of face-to-face PE classes in FG-3 students. There was a significant drop in mean grading scores in PE post-cancellation of face-to-face PE classes in students. FG-2 participants had significantly (p≤0.05) higher grading scores in PE post-cancellation of face-to-face PE classes. Conclusions. The universities closure and cancellation of face-to-face PE classes due to the COVID-19 pandemic decreased overall PA, sport/fitness PA level and academic performance in PE in all participants. It is important to note that the proportional decrease in overall PA for the male students was actually large, then decrease in overall PA for the female students was less. The findings highlight the need for active interventions of PA promotion targeted at the student population in the context of self-isolation measures during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The present study investigated the correlation between the personality traits of the university students who wereengaged in sports and the ones who were not engaged in sports, and their domains of creativity. A total number of593 students studying in the faculty of sports sciences and in other departments were included the study. As the datacollection tools, “Revised/Shortened Form Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ-RS)” and “Kaufman Domainsof Creativity Scale” (K-DOCS) were used in the present study. When the creativity and personality traits of thefemale and male students were compared, it was found out that the neuroticism points of female students were foundto be higher comparing to the male students. While the male students had higher points in in the domains of scholarlycreativity, mechanical/scientific creativity, artistic and psychoticism, the female students were found to have scoredhigher points in the other domains. When the creativity and personality traits of the students who were engaged insports and those of the students who were not engaged in sports were compared, the extroverted characteristics werefound higher and psychoticism characteristics were lower of the individuals engaged in sports, while no differencewas found in other domains. Consequently, it could be said that female students were more neurotic, that theindividuals engaged in sports were more extroverted compared to the ones not engaged in sports, and that malestudents have higher points compared to the female students in the domains of scholarly, mechanical/scientific,artistic and psychoticism.

Background: The pandemic Covid-19 has affected the whole world drastically. Social distancing measures were implemented by all the countries. In order to practice social distancing, most governments had temporarily closed all the educational institutions. Traditional face to face learning was switched to online learning not to compromise on a student’s academic progress. The aim of this study is to observe the impact of online classes on the mental health of school students during covid-19 in Chennai. Materials and Methods: A survey was conducted which was cross sectional. A self administered questionnaire was distributed among school students using an online platform google forms and 120 students participated in the survey. Data was collected and analysed by using SPSS software. Pearson Chi square was done to correlate the gender and mental illness of the participants. Results: 43.33% felt that online classes were stressful. 54.17% of the participants were satisfied with this mode of learning. Female students were more stressed than male students which were not significant. Nearly 45% of female students were not satisfied with this mode of learning which was not significant. It was found that female students were more depressed than male students. However, statistically it is not significant (p = 0.06). Conclusion: Based on this study, about 49.16% of the participants were impacted mentally and are stressed because of online learning and it has also affected their academic performance during this pandemic situation. This study may help them to know stress levels and be aware to take steps to overcome the stress and increase their academic performance.

Background: Gender plays a significant role in the selection of medical specialty. Few studies have been conducted to explore the impact of gender differences on specialty choosing among Chinese medical students.Methods: The specialty choices of 648 students from six consecutive classes in an 8-year MD program were collected and compared between male and female students. A total of 110 students from one graduating class were surveyed by a questionnaire covering 22 career influencing factors. Each factor has a scale of zero to three (zero = no influence, one = mild influence, two = moderate influence, and three = strong influence).Results: Statistically significant gender differences were observed in 10 out of 16 specialties. Most male students limited their specialty choices to surgery (64%), internal medicine (12%), and orthopedics (12%), compared with a relatively diversified pattern in female students. For male students, the top three influencing factors were personal interest, future job prospects for the chosen specialty, and job opportunity in academic medicine. The strongest influencing factors of females were personal interest, specialty-specific knowledge and skills, and the sense of achievement. The expected salary was ranked among the top 10 influencing factors in male but not in females, while the work-life balance was ranked among the top 10 factors in females but not in males.Conclusion: There is a significant gender difference regarding specialty choices among Chinese medical students. Career coaching is needed to help students in their specialty choosing process.

Abstract Critical and creative thinking skills are an essential attribute for success in the 21st century. This study aimed to determine the students’ critical and creative thinking skills in the Islamic senior high schools of Surakarta City so that teachers can pay attention to the strength and weakness of each student based on gender differences. This study used descriptive qualitative analysis. The subject of this study amounted to 180 students consisting of 80 male and 100 female students. The measurement of critical-thinking skills used a 6-essay-question instrument of the chemical material of electrolyte and non-electrolyte solutions that measures the aspects based on Facione theory, namely: analysis, inference, explanation, interpretation, evaluation, and self-regulation. Then, to measure creative-thinking skills, a 4-essay-question test instrument of the chemical material that includes 4 aspects according to Torrance, fluency, flexibility, original and elaboration, was used. The results showed that the creative-thinking skills of male students are better than those of female students and the critical-thinking skills of female students are better than those of male students.

This paper investigates the existence of peer effects in academic outcomes by exploringspecificities in the student's admission process of a Brazilian federal university, which works as a naturalexperiment. Individuals who are comparable in terms of previous academic achievement end up havingclassmates with better or worse performance in college because of the assignment rule of students toclassrooms. Thus, our identification strategy for estimating peer effects on academic outcomes eliminates theendogenous self-selection into groups that would otherwise undermine the causal inference of peer effects.Overall, our findings showed that joining a class with high-ability students damages academic achievementsof the lowest-ability students at UFMG. Although male and female students are both negatively affected bybeing in the first (better) class, we found gender differences. Specifically, being at the bottom of the betterclass make females take less radical decisions compared to male students in the sense that female studentscontinue to study even though with lower performance (reduced GPA and credits earned) while male studentsseem to be more prone towards dropping out (increased number of subjects – or even University registration– cancelled and reduced attendance in classroom). We have also found other heterogeneities in peer effectsin college in terms of class shift, period of admission, area of study and parents’ education. This study is anecessary step before investigating the impact of peer quality on after-graduating decisions using the samenatural experiment. This will allow us to deepen our understanding of how peer effects can also have long-lasting impacts.

This study investigated sleep deprivation and academic performance on nursing students of University of Calabar. A self-structured instrument was administered to a sample of 109 students. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 20.0. Most, 55(50.5. %) of the respondents start depriving themselves of sleep immediately after resumption. On school days, most 53 (48.6%) respondents sleep for 1–3 hours on average; while 40(36.7%) respondents sleep for 4–6 hours on average. During weekends most, 69(63.3%) respondents sleep for 4-6 hours on average, however, during examinations, majority 73(67. %), sleep for 1–3 hours on average. 64(58.6%) take different substances to keep awake. More male 69(63.3%) respondents start depriving themselves of sleep immediately after resumption, as against 50(46%) female respondents. Male students have an average sleep of 5.02 hours during schools days; 5.07 hours during weekends, and 2.39 hours during examinations, while female students have an average sleep of 5.25 hours during schools days, 5.43 hours during weekends, and 4.77 hours during examinations. Male students have a lower mean (SD) hours of sleep of (4.16±.35) compared to female students mean (SD) hours of (5.15±.49). The result further showed a statistically significant relationship between sleep deprivation and academic performance, also, a statistically significant influence of sleep deprivation on academic performance of male and female nursing students. Recommendations: nursing students should be properly counseled on the importance of adequate sleep to their academic performance. They should only deprive themselves of sleep during school days and less during examination.

Family is an important institution to build a person's personality, morality, value and attitude. When this institution communicates properly, it shows the impact e.g. a boy or a girl becomes social human being. Unfortunately in our family gender biasness is reinforced continuously by starting to behave differently with boys and girls from the childhood. Parents communicate with them in a different way which constructs the traits of “masculinity” and “femininity”. Girls are compelled to learn the feminine role with politeness, submissiveness and their mobility is restricted in public world. It is a family which trains a girl to be a good mother, wife, sister or daughter, on the other hand a boy learns to be social, intellectual, able to run the world and strong. This different formation of role and behavior results in the ongoing discrimination everywhere in the society. This reinforcement is sort of relief from social stigmatization but has overall negative impact on life and through this family can be counted as the main birthplace of discrimination against women. Girls and boys must be raised neutrally to eradicate the gender differences and ensure the equality.

The study aims at studying gender differences in the ways male and female students take turns and participate in a mixed-gender classroom. Two groups of first-year English compulsory classes held at two different departments (Geography and Economics) at the University of Karachi took part in the study. The results revealed that in the Geography Department, where there was a female teacher, male students were more dominating as compared to the female students who hardly participated in the class. They took more turns and participated better in the classroom discussion. In addition, they also interrupted the teacher and the female counterparts when they tried to contribute to the discussion. On the other hand, at the Department of Economics, female students had more number of turns. They dominated the classroom as compared to the male students. Besides, the study revealed that the gender of the teacher played an important part in shaping the discourse taking place in the classroom.
