Cinnamon zeylanicum is one of the species of cinnamon plant from the family of Lauraceae. It is not only the main ingredient of spices but also exhibits many medicinal properties. Anti-microbial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-tyrosinase, anti-carcinogenic and anti-mutagenic are some of the activities shown by cinnamon. Radical scavenging and reducing properties of cinnamon are considered as beneficial and important in the field of medicine. Cinnamon zeylanicum consists of a variety of phenolic and flavonoid compounds in different parts of plant. These compounds play major role in antioxidant potential just because of their significant structure and moieties. Cinnamon essential oils are also used for treatment of chronic disorders and it proves to be best alternative to synthetic antioxidants. In present review article we summarized the Cinnamon zeylanicum antioxidant activity by using antioxidant assays, its chemical constituents, its beneficial effects on humans and its applications in various industries as antioxidants.

Background: Medicinal plants are considered a rich source of ingredients, which can be used in drug development and synthesis. Tinospora cordifolia (Wild.) Hook.f. & Thomson, commonly known as guduchi, heart-leaved moonseed and giloya is a herbaceous vine of the family Menispermaceae, has several beneficial properties including antioxidant activity. Aim: The present study was carried out to analyze the antioxidant activity of leaf and stem extracts of Tinospora cordifolia by using DPPH (1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS (2,2´-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)) free radical scavenging assays. Materials and Methods: Dried and powdered leaves and stem of T. cordifolia were extracted with methanol. Ascorbic acid was taken as standard. Total phenolic content was estimated by using Folin-ciocalteu's reagent while total flavonoid content by aluminium chloride reagent to find the correlation of polyphenols with antioxidant activity. ABTS assay of methanolic leaf and stem extracts showed the highest scavenging activity as compared to the DPPH assay. Results: Methanolic stem extract showed higher phenolic and flavonoid content along with antioxidant activity as compared to the methanolic leaf extract. Conclusion: The stem extract exhibited more antioxidant activity than the leaf extract with regards to the all parameters analyzed.

Melastoma malabathricum and Chromolaena odorata are classified under broad-leaved weeds that are widely spread in the open land area. Melastoma malabathricum is commonly known as ‘‘senduduk’’, and C. odorata is locally known as “Pokok Kapal Terbang”. Both weeds are categorized as potential weeds as they have high nutritive value and are rich in chemical compounds. This study aimed to determine their chemical constituents and possible potential for antioxidant activity as these weeds have been reported to possess antioxidant properties. Screening of the plants was performed using standard methods and revealed the existence of various secondary metabolites such as saponins, terpenoids, phenols, tannins, and flavonoids of both weed extracts. Antioxidant activity was validated by the DPPH radical scavenging assay of M. malabathricum and C. odorata crude ethanol extract. The IC50 values for the percentage radical scavenging effects for the extracts were determined. The IC50 value of M. malabatrichum extract was 81.116 μg/mL, C. odorata was 312.903 μg/mL, Vitamin C was 31.023 μg/mL and BHA was 71.521 μg/mL respectively. The study showed that the antioxidant activity of M. malabatrichum was more potent and better than C. odorata.

AbstractOxidative damage of cells and tissues is broadly implicated in human pathophysiology, including cardiometabolic diseases. Polyphenols, as important constituents of the human diet and potent in vitro free radical scavengers, have been extensively studied for their beneficial effects on cardiometabolic health. However, it has been demonstrated that the in vivo antioxidant activity of polyphenols is distinct from their in vitro free radical-scavenging capacity. Indeed, bioavailability of nutritional polyphenols is low and conditioned by complex mechanisms of absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion. Nowadays, it is commonly accepted that the cellular antioxidant activity of polyphenols is mainly carried out via modification of transcription of genes involved in antioxidant defence. Importantly, polyphenols also contribute to cardiometabolic health by modulation of a plethora of cellular processes that are not directly associated with antioxidant enzymes, through nutri(epi)genomic mechanisms. Numerous human intervention studies have demonstrated beneficial effects of polyphenols on the key cardiometabolic risk factors. However, inconsistency of the results of some studies led to identification of the inter-individual variability in response to consumption of polyphenols. In perspective, a detailed investigation of the determinants of this inter-individual variability will potentially lead us towards personalised dietary recommendations. The phenomenon of inter-individual variability is also of relevance for supplementation with antioxidant (pro)vitamins.

The essential oil of the leaves Solanum spirale Roxb. was isolated by hydrodistillation and analyzed for the first time using GC and GC-MS. Thirty-nine constituents were identified, constituting 73.36% of the total chromatographical oil components. ( E)-Phytol (48.10%), n-hexadecanoic acid (7.34%), β-selinene (3.67%), α-selinene (2.74%), octadecanoic acid (2.12%) and hexahydrofarnesyl acetone (2.00%) were the major components of this oil. The antioxidant activity of the essential oil was evaluated by using the DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging assay. The oil exhibited week antioxidant activity with an IC50 of 41.89 mg/mL. The essential oil showed significant antibacterial activity against both Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus with MIC values of 43.0 μg/mL and 21.5 μg/mL, respectively. It also showed significant cytotoxicity against KB (oral cancer), MCF-7 (breast cancer) and NCI-H187 (small cell lung cancer) with the IC50 values of 26.42, 19.69, and 24.02 μg/mL, respectively.

The present study examined the effect of Lactobacillus plantarum ATCC14917 fermentation on the chemical composition and antioxidant activity of apple juice. Apple juice was fermented and examined of its antioxidant activity using chemical models and cellular antioxidant assay. Furthermore, the chemical composition of fermented apple juice was characterized by LC-MS/MS. Lactobacillus plantarum ATCC14917 fermentation showed an increase in DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity as well as cellular antioxidant activity of apple juice. However, fermentation decreased the total phenolic and flavonoid content. Subsequent LC-MS/MS analysis of the phenolic profile indicated that the content of 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid (5-CQA), quercetin, and phloretin with strong antioxidant activity was increased significantly after fermentation. The modified phenolic composition may contribute to the increased antioxidant activity of fermented apple juice. Our findings showed that Lactobacillus plantarum ATCC14917 fermentation may be an efficient way to enhance the bioavailability of phenolic compounds and to protect cells from oxidative stress.

 Objective: The main objective of review is an effort to give detailed information on Valeriana jatamansi and its multiple medicinal properties. Methods: As per the literature, the plant V. jatamansi is a perennial herb and found at subtemperate Himalayan regions of the Kumaon and Garhwal. The plant most popularly known as “Valerian.” The plant belongs to the family Valerianaceae. The roots and rhizomes of the plants are traditionally used to treat ulcers, jaundice, dry cough, seminal weakness, skin diseases, leprosy, and for sleep enhancement due to the presence of a variety of different chemical constituents such as sesquiterpenes, coumarins, iridoids, lignanoids, alkaloids, and flavonoids. From literature, the reported methods performed for different pharmacological activities have been thoroughly discussed and complied. Results: Most of the studies compiled from literature shown that V. jatamansi possess antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic, anxiolytic, and neuroprotective activities. Conclusion: The review reveals that continuous research on this plant is needed to know the exact molecular mechanism and further elaborative studies can lead to develop safe therapeutic use in modern medicine.

Pterygota alata is a large deciduous tree of Malvaceae family. The present study was designed to evaluate in vitro antioxidant activity of stem bark of the plant. Ferric reducing power (FRP) test, 1, 1- diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging test and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) assay were used to detect the antioxidant activity. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were also determined as they are well known phytochemicals with antioxidant property. The bark of the plant showed efficient reducing power as well as free radical scavenging property (IC50 values 52.25 - 172.05). The bark also found rich in total phenolic and flavonoid content. The highest amount of total phenolic content was found in chloroform soluble fraction (29.898 µg/mL) followed by ethyl acetate soluble fraction (15.88 µg/mL). The highest content of total flavonoid also detected in chloroform soluble fraction (107.56 µg/mL) but followed by crude ethanol extract (98.66 µg/mL). Overall, the bark of the plant possesses significant antioxidant activity, therefore can be used as a good natural source of antioxidant. © 2014 JSR Publications. Purpose: Milk thistle (Silybum marianum (L.) Gaertn) has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for liver and gall bladder / biliary tract diseases. Silymarin is the purified and standardized extract from milk thistle seeds. The purpose of the present study is to present a comparative analysis of the total phenolic substances content and the antioxidant effect of silymarin and three different types of Silybum marianum extracts (i.e. ethanol extract, water extract and lyophilized extract). Methods: Total phenolic and flavonoid content of extracts was analysed and the antioxidant activity was assessed by determining their free radical scavenging ability by DPPH method. Results: Total phenolic content is the highest in silymarin– 134.12±3.22 mg GAE/g, followed by lyophilized water extract – 51.74±2.10 mg GAE/g. Silymarin has also been found to have the highest antioxidant activity among all extract samples (338.03 VCEAC µmol /g), followed by S.marianum lyophilised extract (123.05 VCEAC µmol/g). Conclusions: A strong correlation between total phenolic and flavonoid content in the extracts and their antioxidant activity has been found.

Cana plants are flower ornamental plants whose genus or margins are the only ones in the family Cannacea. This study aims to determine the activity of antioxidant compounds from ethanol extract of  Canna coccinea  Mill flower. by using the DPPH method. Flowers Canna coccinea  Mill  extracted using maceration with ethanol as a solvent. As a parameter, testing of antioxidant activity was carried out using the DPPH (1,1 – diphenyl-2-pikrilhidrazil) method which was measured using UV-Vis Spectrophotometry at a wavelength of 517nm. The result showed that ethanol of Canna coccinea Mill,flower proven to have antioxidant activity in each concentration test. The highest concentration has an free radical scavenging activity by reaching of 56,00%.Keywords: Flowers Canna coccinea Mill, Antioxidant, Extraction, DPPH ABSTRAKTanaman kana adalah tanaman hias bunga yang genus atau marganya merupakan satu-satunya dalam family Cannaceae. Bunga Canna coccinea Mill. diekstraksi menggunakan metode maserasi dengan etanol sebagai pelarut. Sebagai parameter, pengujian aktivitas antioksidan dilakukan dengan metode DPPH (1,1-difenil-2-pikrilhidrazil) yang diukur menggunakan Spektrofotometri UV-Vis pada panjang gelombang 517 nm. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan ekstrak etanol bunga Canna coccinea Mill. terbukti memiliki aktivitas antioksidan disetiap konsentrasi pengujian. Konsentrasi tertinggi memiliki aktivitas penangkal radikal bebas dengan mencapai presentase 56,00%.Kata Kunci : Bunga Canna coccinea Mill, Antioksidan, Ekstraksi, DPPH

Sepat leaaf (Mitragynaspeciosa) and dadangkak leaf (Hydrolea spinosa L.) are native plants of South Kalimantan. These plants have high phenolic and flavonoid content. The content of these secondary metabolites is thought to have antioxidant activity. Phenolic compounds and flavonoids work through free radical scavenging mechanisms and reduce oxidative stress. The purpose of this study was to determine the antioxidant activity of sepat leaf and dadangkak leaf using the DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2picrylhydrazyl) method. Sepat and dadangkak leaf extracts were prepared by maceration method using 96% ethanol as a solvent. The extract obtained was tested for antioxidant activity using the DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2picrylhydrazyl) method. The results showed that the antioxidant activity was very strong (<50 mg / mL) in the ethanol 96% extract of sepat leaf with a value of 39.04 ?g / mL and the ethanol extract 96% of dadangkak leaf with a value of 41.84 mg / mL.
