As it is true for other three language skills, reading is a process involving the activation of relevant knowledge and related language skills to accomplish an exchange of information from one person to another .Reading requires that the reader focus attention on the reading materials and integrate previously acquired knowledge and skills to comprehend what someone else has written. There have been a lot of researches on reading and reading comprehension. One of the most interesting areas in reading comprehension is related to schemata theory. This interesting line of research in the second language area concerns the effect on reading performance of readers' own internalized models or emotions and beliefs, consequently different internalized models or schemata, males will have greater comprehension achievement if they read the text which sound masculine and females will have greater comprehension achievement provided that they read text which are about feminine topics. Having a look at the revised pre-university English course book, we can truly recognize that nearly all of the text in this book with the topics such as sports and exercise (with a picture of man in running), global warming and man and space (with a picture of man in the space) are male oriented .Based on the result of previous researches on reading comprehension, this paper suggests: Including balance of reading material ,one half male oriented and one half female oriented; including topics such as space ,war ,competition ,sports for males ;including topics such as house chores ,humanities and baby sittings for females in high school levels of English course book; That both male and female have the equal chance to activate their pre-existent knowledge to comprehend the text.

The sex of the tester was found to have no significant effect on the performance of either boys or girls.

The goals of the research were to compile a reading material that was able to measure the fifth year primary students’ comprehension to the Betawi folklore which represented Indonesian culture; the value found in the Betawi folklore, and to increase their writing skills based on the vocabulary in context assessment. A library research was applied by selecting the story suitable for primary school students, translating materials, simplifying the reading, and making reading exercise to develop student’s reading comprehension skills. Reading materials and exercises were focused to the fifth year primary students who have been learning English for more than three years. It can be concluded that the interesting reading materials can be compiled from the original Indonesian folklore entitled “The Old Sly Stork” to support students’ achievement in finding the story’s values, and students’ skills in writing based on the reading materials, value, and their daily life experiences.

AbstractThis study explores how vocabulary learning strategy usage and skills in the four language domains relate to participants’ increase in vocabulary size and to the learning of specific vocabulary items over a certain period of time. Sixty-one advanced L1 Arabic L2 learners of English read target words in semi-authentic reading materials and were instructed to either guess the meaning from context or consult a dictionary. Pre- and delayed post-tests assessed vocabulary size and knowledge of the target vocabulary items. Results showed that learning through inferencing, but not learning through dictionary use, depended on learners’ familiarity with the particular learning strategy. Additionally, note taking and reading comprehension influenced lexical knowledge and acquisition in complex ways.

AbstractThis study set out to examine the basic reading skills (accuracy and fluency in decoding, word and text reading) and some of the reading-related language skills (phonological awareness and rapid-naming) of 54 adults with low reading comprehension, who read the transparent German orthography. Participants were born in Germany and showed a typical non-verbal processing speed. With the exception of reading accuracy, participants were expected to present deficits in all basic reading and reading-related skills. The average performance in measures of decoding and word reading fluency was extremely low. A notable proportion of the sample, however, did not present a deficit in these measures. As expected, the average rate of reading errors was generally low. Nevertheless, text reading accuracy was deficient for one quarter of the sample. Tests addressing the reading-related language skills also indicated an average low performance in phonological awareness, but not in rapid-naming. Here too, a notable variance was observed. These results suggest that deficits in the basic reading skills and in phonological awareness characterise, on average, adults with low reading comprehension. At the same time, significant deficits in reading comprehension in this population do not necessarily imply deficits in the more basic skills of reading as well. In addition, the results indicate that reading accuracy constitutes a source of difficulty for some of these adults, despite the reading of a transparent orthography. The sources for the variance in performance throughout the different reading and reading-related measures remain to be explored.

The objectives of this research are to develop supplementary reading material for the eighth grade of MTs Negeri 1 Bantul and to reveal the efficacy of the developed additional materials for the eighth grade of MTs Negeri 1 Bantul. The research belongs to the educational Research and Development (R & D). The subjects of the study were the eighth-grade students of MTs Negeri 1 Bantul. The study adapted the R & D model proposed by Borg and Gall (1983). The steps of the study were conducting a needs analysis, designing a course grid, developing the materials, having expert judgment, conducting field testing, revising the elements, and writing the final product. The data were taken from document analysis, observation, and interview. The data were analyzed and described qualitatively. The result of the research showed that (1) the supplementary English reading materials developed based on the need analysis. It was used for determining the objective, indicators, and varied reading tasks and activities of the supplementary materials. The reading tasks were presented in various forms, namely true-false questions, completing sentences, multiple-choice questions, jumbled words, and jumbled sentences that developed based on Three Phase Technique steps. Each Unit consisted of three main parts: “Time to Start, Time to Learn, and Time to Check”. The varied tasks gave the students the opportunity to improve their reading comprehension. In other words, the supplementary English reading material was useful and appropriate to be implemented for the eighth-grade students of MTs Negeri 1 Bantul. (2) The efficacy of the additional English reading materials could be described as the learning process that helped students achieve their needs, to have broad experience in learning the language, to attract the students’ attention and involvement, and to improve student’s reading comprehension. It also provided additional learning sources for the students.
