This paper aims to assess the impact of financial factors which have a direct bearing on the success or failure of the construction companies. This paper is part of the main study which aims to identify key areas of strategic issues for construction companies in Qatar by using 6S strategic management framework. This research adopts a combination of primary and secondary data using a questionnaire survey involving 115 companies holding 99 per cent of the market share in Qatar. In this case study, a total of 17 financial ratios were employed as performance measurement tools. Interpreting these ratios, typical median (industry average) and typical range were used to compare a companys average ratios. The analyses reveal that most of the construction companies do not have sufficient financial resources, lack of monitoring system for the cash flow, and project costs. Without effective strategic management practices, construction companies are putting their self-up to failure. In addition to comparing the financial health of construction sector, this study aims to fill in the gap by creating basic benchmarks for 17 ratios applicable to construction sector in Qatar.

This study aimed at documenting whether dromedary camels have a preference for shade and how their behavior would change depending on the presence of shade and variable space allowance. A total of 421 animals kept in 76 pens (66 with shelter (Group 1), and 10 without shelter (Group 2)) at the camel market in Doha (Qatar) were recorded for 1 min around 11:00 a.m. when the temperature was above 40 °C. The number of animals in the sun and shade and their behaviors were analyzed using an ad libitum sampling method and an ad hoc ethogram. The results of a chi-square test indicated that camels in Group 1 had a clear preference for shade (p < 0.001). The majority of Group 1 camels were indeed observed in the shade (312/421; 74.11%). These camels spent more time in recumbency and ruminating, while standing, walking, and self-grooming were more commonly expressed by the camels in the sun (p < 0.001). Moreover, locomotory stereotypic behaviors (i.e., pacing) increased as space allowance decreased (p = 0.002). Based on the findings of this pilot study, camels demonstrated a preference for shade; shade seemed to promote positive welfare, while overcrowding seemed to trigger stereotypy and poor welfare. Overall, our preliminary results are novel and provide evidence that shaded areas are of paramount importance for camel welfare. Further research, involving designed studies at multiple locations is needed to confirm these results.

BACKGROUND: The Critical Incident Inventory (CII) was developed to assess stressful exposures in firefighters and emergency service workers. The CII includes six subscales: trauma to self, victims known to fire-emergency worker, multiple casualties, incidents involving children, unusual or problematic tactical operations, and exposure to severe medical trauma. OBJECTIVES: To examine the construct validity of all subscales of the Critical Incident Inventory (CII) by assessing the unidimensionality of the scales, and the interval properties of CII subscales by examining fit to the Rasch model and ordering of item thresholds. METHODS: This was a secondary data analysis based on survey data collected from a sample of 390 firefighters. RESULTS: Item 4 and Item 20 were removed with the confirmation of unacceptable fit residual. This revised version of the CII showed satisfactory fit to the Rasch model by non-significant Chi-square test and acceptable level of item fit. We rescored the CII original version and considered all items as only dichotomous response options where 0 represented the original no experience, and 1 presents the combination of experiencing 1, 2, 3 cases. CONCLUSION: The re-appraisal of the revised version CII indicated a satisfactory level of Rasch model fit.

The article focuses on the use of a strategic management tool, especially the EFQM model. The EFQM Excellence Model is a comprehensive management tool used to assess and improve business performance. In this article we focused on the use of this model in tourism enterprises in Slovakia. The main goal of the paper was to carry out research on the use of this model and to identify barriers that prevent the use of this model in managing and increasing the performance of businesses active in tourism. The research was based on formulated hypotheses, which we verified using statistical methods. As suitable statistical methods to verify hypotheses we chose the population proportion method and the Chi-square test of independence. The hypotheses were formulated on the basis of the available literature, published articles and research carried out so far. We also described the reasons that prevent the use of the EFQM model and analyzed the relevant context using a standard deviation. The aim of our paper was to find out the current state of use of the mentioned model and to present the model as a suitable tool for increasing the performance of businesses not only in the field of tourism.
