Financial Inclusion Strategies and Performance of Commercial Banks in Rwanda; A Case of I&M Bank in Rwanda

The research intended to analyze the effect of financial inclusion strategies on performance of commercial banks in Rwanda, a case of I&M Bank Rwanda Ltd. The specific objectives of the study were to examine the effect of agency banking, financial innovation and loan products on financial performance of commercial banks in Rwanda and guided by three theories which are agency theory, constraint-induced theory and innovation theory. A sample size of 92 employees among 1,232 was taken and data was collected through questionnaires and interview guide. SPSS 23, descriptive research design, correlation and regression statistic were used in the analysis of collected data. The results of the study indicated that agency banking application is the important driver to facilitate people to get banking services form banks. The results established that agency banking and financial inclusion are satisfactory in explaining the performance of commercial banks. The coefficient of determination, also known as the R square, was 0.594 (59.4%). This implied that agency banking and financial inclusion strategies explain 59.4% of the variations in the performance of commercial banks. As conclusions, financial inclusion strategies analysed in this research play an important role in the performance of commercial banks in Rwanda. Financial institutions in Rwanda use financial inclusion strategies to boost their financial performances. Automated Teller Machine (ATM) is important and very effective because it facilitates the customers the access of their accounts to withdraw or deposit money as it is for digital banking, debit cards and smart cards. This enables banks to increase sales and influence its financial performance. For loan product, it is concluded that this is an important strategy of I&M Bank to attract customers thus affect the financial performance of the bank. The study recommended that I&M Bank has to improve its agency banking by increasing their number and location. I&M Bank has to extend its branches to remote areas and increase the number of ATMs so that people in remote areas get different financial services easily. The study aimed at investigating the impact of digital financial services on the financial performance of Commercial Banks in Kenya using secondary dataset generated from the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) and the Communication Authority of Kenya (CAK) for a period of five years (2015-2019). To achieve this objective, the study used a multiple regression and Pearson correlations. The study using the Pearson correlations found negative correlations between mobile money (registered mobile money accounts, active mobile money agents and mobile money deposits and withdrawals), digital payments (P2P transfers) and performance of commercial banks. However, the study found positive and significant relationship between customer deposits, Gross non-performing loans and performance of commercial banks in Kenya. The study therefore concludes that digital financial services offered by Fintech companies have a negative impact on the performance of Commercial banks in Kenya and recommends that commercial banks should continuously develop more digital financial services and collaborate more with Fintech companies to improve on their performance. The originality of this study will be of benefit to managers of Commercial banks. Financial inclusion refers to the procedure of making financial services accessible to all individuals and businesses at reasonable costs. Financial inclusion strives to address the constraints that retard people from participating in the financial sector. It has been drawn much attention for its contribution to economic and commercial development, raising inclusive growth, minimizing income inequality all over the world, especially in developing countries like Bangladesh. Central Bank of Bangladesh (Bangladesh Bank) formulated a financial inclusion policy in 2009 intending to make banking services available to unbanked people. This study examines the Financial Inclusion Disclosure by 30 Banks (5 state-owned banks and 25 private commercial banks) of Bangladesh, which are listed in the Dhaka Stock Exchange during the period 2015-2019. The objective of the study is to analyze the activities of the banking sector of Bangladesh for making banking services available to unbanked people. For that purpose, annual reports of the selected banks have been studied, and findings are demonstrated through graphs. According to the study findings, priority areas of financial inclusion include school banking, agent banking, street children account,10 taka farmers account, SME financing, rural credit, women entrepreneur loan, etc.  This study also shows the prospects of financial inclusion, financial inclusion issues that are highly emphasized, barriers to financial inclusion, and initiatives needed to overcome these barriers.  This study findings depict that the financial inclusion performance of state-owned banks of Bangladesh is relatively better than those of private commercial banks, and inclusion actions are increasing with time. Policymakers might use these findings and also the banks to ensure no eligible person remains unbanked.   Keywords: Bangladesh Bank; disclosure; financial inclusion; unbanked people

Despite the expansive infrastructure of commercial banking in Kenya, a large percentage of the country’s population is excluded from access to formal banking services/products. Further, there is insufficiency of credible information on the manner that digital banking strategies relates to inclusion on access to financial services. Accordingly, this study was in search of bridging the gap with the objective of evaluating the effects of the digital banking strategy on financial inclusion midst commercial banks in Kajiado County (a case of Kenya commercial bank in Kajiado county). This research utilised quantitative methods and espoused descriptive research design. It regarded the 323 Kenya commercial banks outlets (branches and bank agents) in Kajiado County for its target population and obtained a sample size of 179 respondents. A closed-ended questionnaire was administered using drop and pick approach, was developed for gathering data to be acquired from primary sources. This research adopted quantitative analysis approach to yield descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. The study concludes that at 5% error level, digital banking channels, digital financial infrastructure, convenience of digital financial services, have a statistical positive significant effect on financial inclusion among commercial banks in Kajiado county while digital service offering has a statistically insignificant effect on financial inclusion among commercial banks in Kajiado county. The study recommends that the commercial banks in Kajiado should, provide digital banking services to areas that are not easily accessible, acquire adequate infrastructure facilities and adopt efficient technology, offer simple, cost effective and secure services to their customers and provide wide variety of digital service.

This study aims to determine how the financial performance of Islamic commercial banks in Indonesia through the islamicity performance index approach for the period 2013-2017, by the principles of justice, halalness, and purification. This study using quantitative descriptive research. The number of banks sampled are five Islamic commercial banks in Indonesia that have been selected, through a purposive sampling technique first. These banks are BRI Syariah, BNI Syariah, Mandiri Syariah, BCA Syariah, and Victoria Syariah. The type of data used is secondary data taken from the financial statements of each islamic commercial bank that is sampled. Through the islamicity performance index approach, the results of this study indicate that the financial performance of islamic commercial bank is unsatisfactory, based on the average of the variables that have been processed in accordance with predicate valuation standards.

Financial inclusion is remained low level by the majority of households and firms in Uzbekistan, instead of using formal finance, they are more partial to save and borrow informally. In this case, both indicate the high cost of finance as the top reason for not using it. Moreover, households, which are mostly Muslim, declare that religious reasons prevent them from using formal finance, as only conventional finance is available. The result of the survey was passed between a number of households and entrepreneurs that most of them claimed to use Islamic banking products. On the other hand, there are not created main mechanisms, infrastructure, and other important devices to regulate Islamic banking services in the country. The major objective of this study was to investigate there were used some Islamic banking products under some conventional banks for two decades and we have discussed the empirical experiences in Uzbekistan as well as given recommendations for improving the use of Islamic financial services related to foreign experiences and the result of the survey.

Technology has become the part of today’s people life. Then, it is actually close to the application of it. Absolutely, it has example; such as the electricity for having more sophisticated in financial technology (Fin-Tech). The simplicity and speed of this technology have led people to adopt it in everyday’s life. One of the innovations in developing business and the economy, especially in the banking sector, is currently to develop Fintech (Financial Technology) which is able to facilitate all types of buying and selling transactions, investments and fundraising. Next, the purpose of this study is to explain and provide an understanding of the technical, procedures and benefits of the application, it is called Sharia FinTech. Then, it is also to contribute to the literature on the capacity of the latest technological and non-technological innovations. The research method used is descriptive research method with a qualitative approach. It is to describe and explore the phenomena in the form of engineering human innovation in the financial technology industry. It is done by taking into account the characteristics, quality, and interrelationships between activities It has several aspects; they are: conducting the observation, having an interview session, creating the documentation, and the last one is doing the Literature review. The result of this study is to increase the knowledge, skills and confidence of the community in managing personal finances to be better and to provide access to be having convenient and accountable financial services. Afterwards, this study linits on explaining and providing an understanding of the technical, procedure and benefits of Sharia Fintech for all people in need. Thence, the limitation of the research only discusses the role of Islamic Fintech in increasing the public financial inclusion and literacy. As for the the next researchers, they can be even wider by adding the collaboration of fintech and the banking world. The novelty of this research is the use of the android application as a digital platform in financial inclusion and literacy.

Financial Technology (Fintech) is a combination of technology and financial services. There are several types of fintech, including Peer to Peer Lending, Risk and Investment Management, Market Aggregator, Payment, Clearing and Settlement, which changes an old innovation with digital technology. One widely used fintech is Payment Gateways such as OVO and Go-Pay, which encourage cashless society. One indicator that is implemented to measure Payment Gateway's financial performance is sales revenue. This study aims to examine the effect of Payment Gateway on the Financial Performance of Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Palembang Indah Mall. Data were collected through questionnaires involving 53 respondents by using normality test, validity test, reliability test, coefficient of determination, and t-test. The result of the t-test and the coefficient of the determination indicates that the Payment Gateway variable significantly influences the financial performance of SMEs measured by sales revenue.

The focus of this study was to examine the effect of liquidity risk on financial performance of commercial banks in Kenya. The period of interest was between year 2005 and 2014 for all the 43 registered commercial banks in Kenya. Liquidity risk was measured by liquidity coverage ratio (LCR) and net stable funding ratio (NSFR) while financial performance by return on equity (ROE). Data was collected from commercial banks’ financial statements filed with the Central Bank of Kenya. Panel data techniques of random effects estimation and generalized method of moments (GMM) were used to purge time-invariant unobserved firm specific effects and to mitigate potential endogeneity problems. Pairwise correlations between the variables were carried out. Wald and F- tests were used to determine the significance of the regression while the coefficient of determination, within and between, was used to determine how much variation in dependent variable is explained by independent variables. Findings indicate that NSFR is negatively associated with bank profitability both in long run and short run while LCR does not significantly influence the financial performance of commercial banks in Kenya both in long run and short run. However, the overall effect was that liquidity risk has a negative effect on financial performance. It is therefore advisable for a bank’s management to pay the required attention to the liquidity management.

In recent times, commercial agent banking services have got considerable attention from academia and the banking industry for accelerating financial inclusion in emerging economies. However, it's incomprehensible to accelerate the economic progression through financial inclusion while ignoring a huge segment of the nonbank people from unprivileged areas. A very few studies have been conducted on the association between agent banking services and financial inclusion in emerging economies such as Bangladesh. The present study aims to investigate the impact of agent banking services provided by commercial banks on financial inclusion. To begin with the investigation, this study was based on agency theory considering the purposive sampling technique. This quantitative study was conducted on 19 commercial banks which are currently providing agent banking services in Bangladesh. An econometric model was proposed whereas the dependent construct has one specific dimension named as financial inclusion proxy by several accounts as a percentage of the adult population, in contrast, the independent construct had three dimensions named as-deposited amount, credited amount, and inward remittance of agent bank. In addition to that, this econometric model was based on secondary data whereas data analysis was conducted by considering panel data statistical method using GRETL (2019) software. This statistical analysis revealed that currently both the deposited amount and credited amount do have a significant impact on financial inclusion.  It has also been inferred that using agent banking for in-warding remittance and new accounts open by clients have a positive significant relationship with financial inclusion. It is argued that agent banking services by comprising unbanked people in financial inclusion will ultimately prompt the opportunity for proper mobilization of resources and funds while maintaining safety and security. Further, it is also claimed that this study would assist to illustrate the present performance of agent banking services in financial inclusion from a multidimensional perspective which will contribute to providing some more innovative and sustainable products and services towards the unbanked people. Finally, this study recommends that commercial banks through agent banking should include a maximum number of nonbank populations into the financial inclusion by ensuring sustainable agent banking services which will accelerate the emerging economics Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs) performance.

Abstract.USE OF FINANCIAL SERVICES EMPIRICAL. STUDY IN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS.The financially included population has access to banking services, hence this insertion favors the economic development of the population, however there are many people who do not use formal financial services, including students. For this reason, the objective of this work was to identify the frequency with which the upper level students of Tuxtepec Oaxaca access the financial services offered by the Banking Institutions. The sample is made up of 800 upper level students who belong to 8 public and private universities in Tuxtepec Oaxaca. The frequency of use of financial services was checked by means of the test. The results show that students use the financial services offered by Banking Institutions. However, it is important to reiterate that some students do not resort to the financial system, this proportion of the population being an area of opportunity for the process of financial inclusion in Mexico.Key Words: Use, Financial Services, University Students.Resumen.La población incluida financieramente accede a los servicios bancarios, de ahí que ésta  inserción favorece el desarrollo económico de la población, sin embargo existen muchas personas que no  utilizan  los servicios financieros formales, incluyendo a los estudiantes. Por este motivo, el objetivo de este trabajo fue identificar la frecuencia con la que los estudiantes de nivel superior de Tuxtepec Oaxaca acceden a los servicios financieros que ofrece las Instituciones Bancarias. La muestra está conformada por 800 alumnos del nivel superior que pertenecen a 8 universidades públicas y privadas de Tuxtepec Oaxaca. Se  comprobó por medio de la prueba t la frecuencia del uso de los servicios financieros. Los resultados muestran que los estudiantes usan los servicios financieros que ofrecen las Instituciones Bancaria. Sin embargo, es importante reiterar que algunos estudiantes no recurren al sistema financiero, siendo esta proporción de la población un área de oportunidad para el proceso de inclusión financiera en México.Palabras Claves: Uso, Servicios Financieros, Estudiantes Universitarios.
