According to World Health Organization (WHO) approximately four million children less than 5 years of age in Asia, Africa, and Latin America die annually from diarrhea; and 80% of these deaths occur in the first year of life. Objective: To see how a zinc supplement influences the severity of acute diarrhea in children under the age of five. Methods: In current study, we analyze the effect of zinc on diarrheal patients. Zinc was randomly assigned to diarrheal patients in different concentration 5 mg, 10 mg, 15 mg and 20 mg. There were two groups in our study, treatment and control group. Results: The results are presented in the form of descriptive and inferential statistics. In T1 (Treatment Group) number of Diarrhea patients < 1 Year of age were 16, 2-4 years of age were 45, 4-5 years of age and maximum no of patients in T1 < 2 year of age were 57. Number of male patients were 84 while female patients were 67 in T1.In T2 (Control Group) number of male patients were 92 while female patients were In T1 number of patients residing in urban area were 51 while rural were 100. In T2 number of urban were 69 while rural were 82.Number of patients stay in the hospital for one day were 67 ,15 for Four days and only 1 for seven days in T1. In T2 number of patients stay in the hospital for one day were 29, 17 for four days and only 6 for seven days. In T1 number of Patients with watery diarrhea were 87, Mucoid consistency of stool were 31,soft consistency of stool were 23 and formed consistency of stool were 9.In T2 watery diarrhea were 92,Mucoid consistency of stool were 25,soft consistency of stool were 31 and formed consistency of stool were 4. Frequency of stool significantly reduced (P<0.005) at 7th day of zinc treatment while consistency of stool was significantly improved (P<0.005) at day 3 and day 5 of zinc treatment. Children who received zinc supplements showed a marked improvement in all outcome measures, suggesting that this deficiency is amenable to correction by replacement.

Background: Dyslipidemia is a metabolic disorder that results from imbalanced and overfeeding as well as sedentary life. Elevated blood lipid levels can affect cochlear blood flow and fluidity, leading to decreased hearing and tinnitus. We aimed to determine whether there is a relationship between tinnitus and dyslipidemia by investigating the blood lipoprotein values of patients with tinnitus. Methods: The lipid profiles of the patients with idiopathic tinnitus who were selected among the patients who applied to Istanbul Haydarpaşa Numune Training and Research Hospital with the complaint of tinnitus between January 2019 and May 2020 were examined. The test results and age and gender distributions were compared with control groups without tinnitus complaints and statistical evaluation was performed. Results: Hypercholesterolemia in 42% of 6472 patients with idiopathic tinnitus, 18% low HDL, 50% high LDL, Hyperlipidemia was detected in 21%. 1942 (30%) of these patients were male; 4530 (70%) are women. The number of patients in the control group without tinnitus was 6470. Hypercholesterolemia in 49% of this group; 21% low HDL, 42% high LDL, 16% hyperlipidemia was detected. In this control group, 1950 (30%) of the patients were male and 4520 (70%) were female. Cholesterol of male and female patients with tinnutus. When the cholesterol, LDL and triglyceride values of HDL and LDL values and female and male patients in the control group were examined, a statistically significant difference was found (p <0.005). No statistically significant difference was found between HDL values of female and male patients with tinnutus and HDL values of female and male patients in the control group (P> 0.05).Conclusions: There is a statistically relationship between tinnitus and dyslipidemia. The presence of dyslipidemia is vital due to atherosclerosis caused by dyslipidemia, especially coronary artery involvement. Therefore, dyslipidemia should be treated as it causes many diseases.

Background: Friedreich ataxia (FRDA) is the most common form of inherited ataxia, comprising one-half of all hereditary ataxias with a carrier rate between 1 in 60 to 1 in 90 and with a disease prevalence of 1 per 29,000. It can occur in two forms the classic form or in association with a vitamin E dependent ataxia. The precise role of Vitamin E in the nervous system is unknown; An Oxidative attack is suspected to play a role in Ataxia with Vitamin E deficiency, as well as in Friedreich ataxia. Vitamin E is the major free-radical-trapping antioxidant. Objective: Theobjectives of the study is to asses vitamin E level in patients with Friedreichs ataxia phenotype in Iraqi patients. Type of the study:Cross-sectional study. Method: This study was conducted at the neuroscience hospital and Baghdad teaching hospital during the period from the 1st of November 2013 through November 2014. Forty patients with friedreich's ataxia attended in neuroscience hospital and Baghdad teaching hospital during this period; there was12 male, 20 female patients and their age range between (4-50) years. Results: Regarding the level of vitamin E in patients in the present study, The study revealed that mean level of vitamin E for Friedreich ataxia patients was (10.92 μg/ml) ranging from (8-18 μg/ml),while in the control group the mean was (28.06μg/ml) ranging from (22-36μg/ml), the difference in mean level was found to be statistically significant (p=0.0001.) Thirty percents of (FRDA) patients was (8-9.9μg/ml), while half of patients (50%) were within (10-11.9 μg/ml),and low percentage (15 %)of patients were within (12-13.9 μg/ml ). The rest (5%) were had vitamin E level equal or more than 14 μg/ml. these finding revealed that majority of Friedreich ataxia patients were found with low level of vitamin E (32 patients(80%)), and low percentage with normal level (8 patients(20%.)) Patients with Friedreich ataxia were found to have a comparable level 10.47±1.79(8.4-13.5),11.48±2.61(9.4-18) and 10.66±1.26(9-12.5) for those with less than 10 years, 10-19 years , equal or more than 20 years of age respectively (p=0.382), while it was found to have a significantly decreasing level with advance in the age for the control group, 30.57±4.61(24.5-36), 27.46±3.16(23.7-33.5), 25.50±3.03 (22.9-29) for those less than 10 years, 10-19 years, 20 years or more respectively (p=0.006.) Vitamin E level in relation to Gender showed that Friedriech ataxia male patients had significantly higher vitamin E level compared to females [12.05±2.66 (9.0-18.0) compared to 10.17±1.07 (8.4-12.0)] (p=0.003), while relation to gender in the control group was not of significant value statistically [27.08±2.90 (22.9-30.0) for male compared to 29.04±4.97 (23.7-36) for females] , p=0.136. Conclusion: In the light of the results of the present study, the following conclusions were made:  The level of vitamin E in friedreichs ataxic phenotype patients was subnormal than normal range representing 80% of the sample selected for the test.  The level of vitamin E in male patients of freidriechs ataxic phenotype patients was higher than female patients.

Background: Gender effects are strong in multiple sclerosis (MS), with male patients showing a worse clinical outcome than female patients. Functional reorganization of neural activity may contribute to limit disability, and possible gender differences in this process may have important clinical implications. Objectives: The aim of this study was to explore gender-related changes in functional connectivity and network efficiency in MS patients. Additionally, we explored the association of functional changes with cognitive function. Methods: Sixty subjects were included in the study, matched for age, education level and intelligence quotient (IQ). Male and female patients were matched for disability, disease duration and white matter lesion load. Two cognitive domains often impaired in MS, i.e. visuospatial memory and information processing speed, were evaluated in all subjects. Functional connectivity between brain regions and network efficiency was explored using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and graph analysis. Differences in cognitive and functional characteristics between groups, and correlations with cognitive performance, were examined. Results: Male patients showed worse performance on cognitive tests than female and male controls, while female patients were cognitively normal. Decreases in functional connectivity and network efficiency, observed in male patients, correlated with reduced visuospatial memory ( r = −0.6 and r = −0.5, respectively). In the control group, no cognitive differences were found between genders, despite differences in functional connectivity between healthy men and women. Conclusions: Functional connectivity differences were found in male patients only and were related to impaired visuospatial memory. These results underline the importance of gender in MS and require further investigation in larger and longitudinal studies.

Background : Chronic renal disease changes both quality and quantity of bone through multifactorial influences on bone metabolism, leading to osteopenia, osteoporosis and increased risk of fracture. The objectives of this cross sectional study are to determine the mean bone mineral density (BMD) and to identify osteopenia and osteoporosis in patients of CKD on maintenance hemodialysis. Methods: Twenty three male and 18 female patients with age between 18 and 50 years were enrolled in this study. The BMD of the lumbar vertebral spine (LV) and the neck of femur (FN) were measured in all patients. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 20.0 software and the level of significance was considered as P <0.05. Results: The mean BMD in the LV (L2-L4) was 1.18 ± 0.19 gm/cm2 in male and 1.04 ± 0.13 gm/cm2 in female patients (P =0.011). The mean BMD in the FN was 0.90 ± 0.19 gm/cm2 in male and 0.77 ± 0.15 g/cm2 in female patients (P = 0.022). Based on the World Health Organization criteria, 26.0% of the male and 22.2% of the female patients in our study had normal BMD; 39.2% male and 38.9%female patients had osteopenia, while 34.8% male and 38.9% female patients had osteoporosis .This study showed a marked decrease in mean BMD in the cortical bone (FN) compared with trabecular bone (LV) (P = 0.001) as well as in female patients on maintenance hemodialysis compared with male patients . Significant negative correlation (r= -0.480; p=0.001) was found between duration of hemodialysis and bone mineral density (BMD) in lumbar spine and femoral neck. Conclusion: The measurement of BMD is a good non-invasive screening test for renal bone disease and that a high number of patients with CKD stage 5 on maintenance hemodialysis have markedly decreased BMD. Beta-thalassemia is a heterogeneous group of hereditary blood disorders characterized by defects in the synthesis of the β- chains of hemoglobin, resulting in variable phenotypes ranging from severe anemia to clinically asymptomatic individuals. This study aims to assess the serum PTH, vitamin D, calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase, and magnesium levels in β-thalassemia major patients. A total of 50 (30 male and 20 female) patients with β- thalassemia major with ages range 11- 16 years and an equal number of sex-matched healthy adolescents as a control group were included in this study. A total of 52% of patients were lived in an urban area, and there was no significant difference between patients and the control group regarding residency. Male patients showed low statistically significant (P 0.05) mean serum PTH, vitamin D, and calcium levels, but mean serum phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase levels were significantly higher (P 0.05) as compared to the male control group. However, female patients had low, but without statistical significant (P>0.05) mean serum PTH level, whereas vitamin D and calcium levels were highly significant (P 0.05) reduced. The phosphorus and ALP levels were highly significantly (P 0.05) increased as compared to female controls. Regarding β- thalassemia major group, the current study showed male patients had non-significant (P 0.05) higher levels of PTH, calcium, phosphorus, and ALP. In contrast, vitamin D level was non-significantly (P 0.05) low in male patients as compared to female patients. Mean serum level of PTH had a negative correlation with phosphorus, but it had a positive association with vitamin D, calcium, ALP, and magnesium. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that β-thalassemia major patients have a markedly deranged biochemical metabolic bone profile. Regular monitoring of PTH and biochemical mineral profile is also recommended.

Abstract An endometrial polyp is most commonly a benign, localized proliferation of the glands and the endometrial stroma, covered with epithelium and protruding above the level of the mucosa. These polyps are most often diagnosed during investigation into the causes of irregular menstrual bleeding or infertility. It is produced in the highest concentration during the secretory phase of the endometrial cycle. The level of glycodelin reaches its peak 12 days after ovulation. The aim of this paper was to determine the changes in the immunohistochemical expression of glycodelin at the level of the endometrium and in the tissue of the polyp, before and after hysteroscopic polypectomy, in infertile female patients with an endometrial polyp, and in the endometrial tissue of female patients without an endometrial polyp. The study included 82 infertile female patients. The infertile patients were divided into two groups. The first was the experimental group which included 56 infertile female patients who had an endometrial polyp. The second group was the control group, composed of 26 infertile female patients who did not have an endometrial polyp. The results obtained primarily indicate the existence of changes in the immunohistochemical expression of the cytokine glycodelin in the female patients from both the experimental and the control group, not only prior to but also after hysteroscopy. A larger number of patients who have an endometrial polyp show a lack of glycodelin expression, more pronouncedly so in the bioptate of the endometrium than in the endometrial polyp.

Background and Objectives: Epilepsy patients have a higher risk of sudden unexplained death compared to the rest of the population. Cardiac repolarization abnormalities might be seen in epilepsy during interictal periods. We aimed to evaluate the changes in electrocardiography (ECG) parameters in generalized tonic-clonic seizure patients treated with carbamazepine or valproic acid (VPA) drug. Materials and Methods: A totally of 129 subjects (66 epilepsy patients, 63 healthy subjects) were enrolled in the study. Of the patients, 36 were on carbamazepine and 30 were on VPA. There were 12-lead ECGs obtained from all participants. RR interval (time between consecutive R peaks), QT interval (defines the period of ventricular repolarization), corrected QT (QT interval corrected for heart rate; QTc), QTc-maximum (QTc-max), QTc-minimum (QTc-min), QTc dispersion (QTcd), P (atrial depolarization )-maximum (P-max), P-minimum (P-min) and P dispersion (Pd) were measured. Results: QTd (QT dispersion), QTcd, and Pd values were significantly higher in the patients compared to the controls (p < 0.01). QTcd, Pd, and P-max values were statistically higher in male patients compared to healthy male controls. QTcd values were significantly higher in female patients using carbamazepine compared to the female patients on VPA and healthy controls (p = 0.01). Male patients using VPA had significantly higher QTcd values against the male population in carbamazepine and control groups. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that QTd, QTcd, and Pd values were significantly higher in epilepsy patients than in healthy controls. In addition, female patients using carbamazepine and male patients using VPA were prone to ventricular arrhythmia compared to the control group.

BackgroundThat sexual dysfunction occurs in schizophrenia is not in doubt. Previous studies have had weaknesses such as the use of selected populations or the absence of a control group.AimsTo measure rates of sexual dysfunction in people with schizophrenia compared with the general population.MethodSexual dysfunction was assessed by a self-completed gender-specific questionnaire. Ninety-eight (73%) of 135 persons with schizophrenia and 81 (71%) of 114 persons recruited as controls returned the questionnaire.ResultsAt least one sexual dysfunction was reported by 82% of men and 96% of women with schizophrenia. Male patients reported less desire for sex, were less likely to achieve and maintain an erection, were more likely to ejaculate more quickly and were less satisfied with the intensity of their orgasms. Female patients reported less enjoyment than the control group. Sexual dysfunction in female patients was associated with negative schizophrenic symptoms and general psychopathology. There was no association between sexual dysfunction and type of antipsychotic medication.ConclusionsPeople with schizophrenia report much higher rates of sexual dysfunction than do the general population. Men and women with schizophrenia have a different pattern of sexual dysfunction.

A randomized controlled double-blind clinical trial was conducted to evaluate tempe-based formulated foods fortreatment of young Indonesian children suffering from acute diarrhea. A total of 214 cases aged between 6 and 24 monthsvisiting two teaching hospitals, i.e., Sardjito hospital (n=102) in Yogyakarta and Karyadi hospital (n=112) in Semarang. Twocases from one hospital were dropped because they moved to other towns. In addition to their hospital food given duringhospitalization and daily food at home, 72 cases were given tempe-based formulated foods with tempe produced traditionally(group TT), 72 were given tempe produced industrially (group IT), whereas a control group of 68 received soybean powderformulated foods (group IS). Formula feedings were started immediately following WHO (world health organization) standardoral rehydration therapy (ORT) and continued at the patients homes for up to 90 consecutive days, including feedings duringhospitalization. Follow-up observations at patients homes were conducted twice weekly. The initial clinical characteristics ofthe cases in each group were similar. Using analysis of variance there was a non significant trend towards a shorter durationof diarrhea in the groups using tempe based formula (p=0.079). Using the t-test, the duration of diarrhea appeared to besignificantly shorter only for the group using formula with traditional tempe compared with the group using soy formula(p=0.035). The total amount of feeding formula and the total amount of calories consumed at the hospital and at home wassimilar for all three groups, although the group receiving the control formula consumed a somewhat higher amount of breastmilk (p=0.045) and a lower amount of solid food at home. Weight for age was below normal at the start of the study or afterrehydration (Z-score between -1.0 and -1.4) and approached the normal value at the end of the study for all three groups (Zscorebetween -0.51 and -0.27). The increase in Z-score was highest in the groups receiving tempe based formula (+1.0 inthe TT group and +0.9 in the IT group) and lowest in the IS group (+0.7). This implies that a tempe based formula can diminishthe duration of acute diarrhea and improve weight gain following an episode of acute diarrhea.
