Our students experience difficulties in working on non-routine mathematical problems. They cannot see the general through special things or instead see things that are special through common things when dealing with mathematical concepts and examples. They cannot see the essential features of the way or recognize it when presented in various forms. We needed to improved their learning motivation and thinking creativity through the appropriate learning form. For that purpose, the action research was carried out by applying the snowball throwing type of cooperative learning in two cycles by involving as many as 70 participants in our calculus course. We implemented the teaching techniques for finding a diffractive solution in period 1 and the methods of solving differential equations in period 2. The learning implementation of period two was the improvisation of the cycle one’ scenario by adding the learning resources, the Internet. The increase in learning motivation and thinking creativity had been able to meet the predetermined targets and concluded that the snowball throwing type of cooperative learning used in calculus lectures is useful.

Problem-based learning in mathematics learning: Teacher's efforts to increase students’ learning interest and achievementAbstractThis classroom action research aims to increase learning interest and mathematics learning achievement of students by implementing the Problem-Based Learning (PBL). This action research conduct in four stages (planning, implementation, observation, and reflection) as the Kemmis dan Mc Taggart model suggests. A total of 26 students in class VII.B in SMP Taman Dewasa Jetis, Yogyakarta, were involved in this action research. The instruments used in data collection consisted of a questionnaire, observation sheet, and test. Data on learning interest and implementation of learning are analyzed qualitatively, while data on learning achievement are analyzed quantitatively. The results of the analysis showed an increase in interest, as well as high mathematics learning achievement from the initial conditions. Some conclusions obtained as follows. First, PBL has increased the learning interest and achievement of students in class VII.B of Taman Dewasa Jetis, Yogyakarta, after taking two cycles of action. Second, the increase in students’ interest in learning is due to the position of students in the PBL that is no longer passive. Third, the presence of various mathematical problems that are close to the context of the daily life of students makes the abstract mathematical concepts more easily understood so that not only interest but student achievement also increases. Fourth, the success of implementing PBL is largely determined by the consistency of the teacher in carrying out his role as a facilitator of learning. Several factors that influenced the success of this research were discussed in the article.

As teachers of mathematics, we spend hours searching for good examples of mathematics problems to use in the classroom. We often seek problems that will grab students' attention, that are relevant to their interests, and that demonstrate the mathematical concepts that we hope to teach. Although we rely on many sources for these problems—such as textbooks, workbooks, journals, colleagues, and the Internet—we also spend a good deal of time constructing our own problems, whether they be for lectures, class work, homework, or tests. Designing problems is typically a task for teachers; however, this process can also be a valuable experience for our students. In this article, I describe the complexities involved in writing mathematics problems and suggest a cooperative learning activity that gives students the challenge of writing mathematical logic problems for their peers.
