A study of writing assessment as part of special educator preparationAbstractThe main goal of the study was to investigate whether teaching and training in a shared set of assessment criteria results in a greater degree of consistency in the assessment of writing performance. The study was based on data collected from the study “Developing national standards for writing. A tool for teaching and learning”, also known as the “the Norm project” (Berge et al., 2017). Forty preservice special educators rated the same 4 pupil-texts before and after an intervention consisting of lectures and seminars on writing norms and formal assessment criteria. The results showed no significant differences in agreement between students’ assessments before and after the intervention. There are several possible explanations for these findings. For example, the lack of change may be due to the limited scope of the intervention or connected to characteristics of the assessment tool. The findings also illustrate the difficulty associated with conducting reliable assessments of pupils’ writing and increasing the quality of preservice educators’ assessments through training. There is a clear need for more research on how to increase the reliability of writing assessment and find better approaches to improving the assessment abilities of future educational professionalsKeywords: writing, Assessment, Reliability, Teaching Assessment in Higher Education

The Mindfulness-Based Interventions: Teaching Assessment Criteria (MBI:TAC) was originally developed as a tool to assess the teaching competence of mindfulness-based program (MBP) teachers. The tool was made freely available and has since been used by mindfulness-based teacher training organisations internationally. During this time the MBI:TAC has evolved in its usage, from an assessment tool to one which informally supports how MBP teachers are trained. In this article, we first examine the rationale for implementing the MBI:TAC in MBP teacher training; second, we offer practical guidance on ways of integrating the tool into teacher training pathways with awareness of its potential and possible pitfalls; and third, we offer guidance on using the tool as a framework for giving effective feedback to trainees on their teaching practice. Implementing the MBI:TAC in teacher training may support the quality and integrity of MBP teacher training, and thus ensure high quality MBP teachers graduating. In turn this may help avoid the ‘implementation cliff’ – that is, the quality of an intervention delivery is delivered in optimal conditions when it is being researched, and drops in quality when delivered in sub-optimal, ‘real world’ conditions.

Abstract Purpose The assessment of the quality of life (QoL) of patients with chronic diseases before and after medical interventions has gained increasing importance in recent decades. Particularly for patients with visible keloid scars in the head and neck region, standardized measurement tools are either absent or have been shown to be insufficient. The aim of the present study was to create a new standardized questionnaire that is specific to auricular keloid patients and reflects their clinical symptoms and QoL. Methods The Keloid Intervention Benefit Inventory 21 (KIBI-21) questionnaire was developed in two stages. First, a group of experts identified a pool of 26 questions and modified and supplemented the items through a comparison with existing QoL assessments so that they related to keloid-specific clinical symptoms and the QoL of patients with auricular keloids before and after a medical intervention. This questionnaire was distributed to 27 outpatients who had undergone medical interventions for visible auricular keloids. Second, a sequential statistical analysis was conducted. This included a single-item assessment and reduction, analysis for internal consistency, construct validity, and divergence validity as well as a factor analysis. The analyses were performed for the entire questionnaire and for the items in the subcategories General Health, Physical Symptoms, Self-Esteem, and Social Impact. Results The final version of this newly validated and standardized KIBI questionnaire consisted of 21 items, of which each item was assigned to only one subscale. The questionnaire showed a Cronbach's α of 0.84 with a good internal consistency. In the item correlation validity, strong associations were found in all subscales, except for the Social Impact Subscale. Conclusion The keloid-specific QoL questionnaire KIBI-21 proved to be a reliable and reproducible instrument to assess the QoL and clinical symptoms in patients suffering from auricular keloids before and after a medical treatment.

A study was conducted to evaluate the drinking water quality of Gujranwala city. Samples were collected from 16 locations including: 4 tube wells, 4 overhead reservoirs (OHR) and 8 house connections. Twelve physicochemical and two bacteriological parameters were tested, before and after monsoon and compared with National Standards for Drinking Water Quality (NSDWQ). The results demonstrated that most of the physicochemical parameters, except lead, nickle and chromium were within NSDWQ before and after monsoon. Bacteriological and heavy metal contamination was found before and after the monsoon. Possible reasons of contamination are: no disinfection, old and leaking water pipes, poor drainage duringmonsoon and possible cross connections between water and sewerage lines. It is recommended to practice disinfection, laying of water and sewerage pipes on opposite sides of streets and periodic water quality monitoring.

The students with different backgrounds having habituated to different type of teaching methods and ter-minologies are joining Ayurveda education and there is big mismatch between their expectation, perception and actual teaching and training. Teaching and learning process in Ayurveda colleges has not much changed in spite of availability of technological tools. There will be need of dynamic continuum between research, education and practice. Better teaching techniques and modernization of Ayurveda education will improve the clinical and academic output, which in turn make them able to be presentable for ayurvedic principles. So, in order to convert Ayurveda to global level from the traditional way, it is necessary to adopt the latest technological tools and scientific framework in Ayurveda education. There will be urgent need to update and modernize the education system of Ayurveda and make the curriculum which is student centric and teacher should be facilitator. A multi-disciplinary approach in education system will be better for Indi-an system of medicine where some teachers from pharmaceutical chemistry, analytical chemistry, botany, phyto chemistry etc. will be appointed in institutions to provide the required trainings. Quality of institu-tions are very important concern in Ayurveda education sector. Quality of teachers also play very im-portant role in providing quality education to students because only through good education a relatively permanent change in personality of individuals is achieved in cognitive, psychomotor and affective do-mains. There is need to involve many other modern research methods in Ayurveda such as PIP and EIS. Medical informatics, Cyber medicine, Computerized Ayurveda studies will be brought revolutionary changes in the background of Ayurveda professionals.

This paper reports on a study in which students co-constructed a rubric checklist with their lecturer and which they used to assess themselves. Data were collected by means of a student questionnaire, tutor feedback, as well as tutors’ and lecturers’ observations to ascertain students’ experiences and opinions of the design process and of using the tool to self-assess. The findings show that co-designing the rubric checklist with students increased their motivation and enhanced students’ confidence in completing the task. In addition, students gained enormous benefits from using the rubric checklist as a self-assessment tool. Reflecting critically on the feedback received from students and tutors the authors argue that for enhanced student engagement in the teaching and learning process they should be involved as active participants in the assessment processes. In addition, students need to learn to assess the quality of their own work early in their academic career with continuous guided practice throughout their studies with the intention of making the practice of self-assessment a norm rather than an exception, thereby creating independent reflective learners.
