Background: Burnout syndrome in medical students and medical staff has been reported in Peru as a serious and frequent entity, which can have grievous personal and professional consequences. Although there are many studies carried out in other countries, the information on burnout syndrome in students of medicine and Peruvian doctors is still insufficient. Objective: To review and make a synthesis of published works on burnout syndrome in Peruvian students of medicine, medical residents and physicians during the last five years. Methodology: A literature search was performed using various databases (PubMed, SCOPUS, Scielo) regarding original articles on burnout in medical professional population and students of medicine published from 2015 to 2020. Results are presented in narrative form. Results: The prevalence of burnout syndrome in Peru has been reported in the range of 2.44–57.6% in students of medicine; 9.65–51.4% in medical residents; and 2.67–80% in physicians. Conclusions: Burnout syndrome in Peru has been reported with prevalence rates of a broad range, varying a lot. However, in the reviewed studies, methodological shortcomings were detected including little conceptual consensus among researchers by which criteria the presence of burnout should be identified, little consideration of the work environment and cultural factors in its analysis and a lack of longitudinal studies. All this hinders the global appreciation of the phenomenon and the use of the generated knowledge in proposing appropriate coping strategies.

Abstract Background Burnout syndrome is a frequent syndrome related to people that feel a deterioration in their daily activities due to highly demandant psychological requirements in their workplaces. Within last decades, this syndrome has been studied across medical professionals, concluding that stress levels that physicians suffer is high enough to make them develop burnout syndrome. In the case of medical students, there are some recent studies, although with small samples. For this reason, given that this phenomenon may produce a huge impact in medical students’ development, the aim of this study is to analyze the influential factors that may contribute to its occurrence. Methods The necessary information was gathered through a web-based questionnaire, divided in two parts. The first part of the survey included questions related to personal aspects of the students. Burnout related questions (second part) were divided in three subscales to evaluate exhaustion, cynicism, and academic efficacy levels. Results Family support for studying medicine is associated with lower burnout levels in all three scales of the Maslach Burnout Inventory. The number of years spent in the degree show the opposite trend: the more years in the degree, the higher score in all burnout scales. Conclusions Burnout syndrome is a problem among medical students in Spain that increases with the number of years studying medicine. It should be also noticed that family support and vocational studies are independent factors related to lower levels of burnout.

The aim of this systematic review was to examine the prevalence of burnout-related symptoms in Brazilian schoolteachers who work in public schools. The literature search was conducted using the following databases: PubMed-MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science. Peer-reviewed studies published in English, Spanish, or Portuguese were considered for inclusion. A total of 2106 records were identified through database searching and 7 additional studies were identified through other sources. Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 19 studies were included in the systematic review. Burnout syndrome prevalence was assessed through seven distinct questionnaires. Overall, the majority of the studies presented high methodological quality. Brazilian schoolteachers exhibited high levels of emotional exhaustion (21–69%), high or moderate degrees of depersonalization (8–32%), and high levels of personal realization and enthusiasm toward the job (30–90%). From these data, it is possible to infer that Brazilian schoolteachers are, in general, affected by burnout syndrome. However, and, surprisingly, they seem to be motivated and idealistic, as demonstrated by their high levels of personal realization and enthusiasm toward the job (30–90%). This likely favors the implementation of programs designed to avoid or reduce burnout, deal with stress, and enhance teaching quality.

BACKGROUND Medical students are at an increasing risk of depression and burnout during their study period. This trend among future physicians is a cause for concern, given the great responsibility that the medical profession entails. Medical faculties therefore play a significant role in supporting medical students in maintaining their mental health. Especially in the context of the current COVID-19 pandemic, support services that allow greater flexibility in their use become particularly relevant. Online programs can be accessed from anywhere and any time and can be used individually in a safe or well-known setting. From a preventive perspective, individual characteristics that have been shown to be protective of mental health should be addressed in such programs. Before conceptualizing an online program, reviewing existing online programs for medical students is a first relevant step. OBJECTIVE This review provides an overview of the current online programs for medical students to strengthen their mental health by addressing individual characteristics believed to be protective of mental health and addressable in medical curricula. METHODS PubMed, ERIC, Cochrane, and Web of Science were used for a systematic literature search. The programs had to be offered digitally and address medical students. Preventive individual characteristics for mental health were included in the search to provide information on their role in the studies. Publications also should include information on the effectiveness of the respective programs. RESULTS The literature search yielded 592 articles; of them, only nine met the study criteria. The programs found included elements of cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness training, or peer support. Regarding the mental health outcomes, two studies showed a significant reduction in perceived stress and one study indicated a reduced level of burnout. One program had significant immediate effects on mindfulness, empathy, and resilience; two studies indicated strengthening coping strategies. Two programs were qualitatively assessed as helpful. One study is still ongoing. CONCLUSIONS Only a few studies have assessed the effectiveness of online programs to strengthen medical students’ mental health. The programs found mostly addressed preventive individual characteristics but were not developed on the basis of a survey of medical students’ demands. Furthermore, they were provided as add-on programs; integration of such programs into the curriculum may highlight the relevance of mental health. For the development of future online programs, the concrete needs of the respective target group should be surveyed and taken into account. Based on this, suitable online programs can be developed in a targeted way to strengthen mental health by addressing preventive individual characteristics. This needs-based prevention approach can support health-promoting education of future physicians.

The aim of this study was to combine the results of identified surveys on the prevalence of tobacco use in old age to estimate world prevalence of tobacco use and possible factors related to such behavior among the elderly. The literature search included electronic databases such as MEDLINE, LILACS, and Biological Abstracts, hand-searching of specialist journals and cited reference searches. The combined global prevalence was estimated using the random effects model. The total number of elderly subjects included in all surveys was 140,058, with data available from all the continents. Overall prevalence of tobacco use was 13% in both genders (22% male and 8% female). The prevalence rates were heterogeneous among surveys and were associated with smoking definition, questionnaire application, and country economic status. Few epidemiological studies assessed tobacco use among the elderly. A higher prevalence rate of tobacco use in males who live in higher income countries could be found, although additional evidence regarding elderly samples is still required.

Salah satu SDM (Sumber Daya Manusia) di RS yang mempunyai waktu bersama pasien paling lama adalah perawat. Pada pemberian asuhan keperawatan yang berkualitas diperlukan suatau kinerja yang baik. Terdapat beberapa hal yang mempengaruhi kinerja, salah satunya adalah quality nursing work life (QNWL). Perawat dengan beban kerja yang tinggi dan desain kerja yang monoton rentan mengalami burnout syndrome (stres kerja). Penelitian ini mempunyai tujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan QNWL dengan burnout syndrome. Korelasional dan crosssectional menjadi desain dan pendekatan dalam studi ini. QNWL merupakan variabel independen dan burnout syndrome variabel dependennya. Data diperoleh melalui kuesioner. Besar sampel sejumlah 30 responden yang diperoleh secara purposive sampling. Analisa data dilakukan dengan Spearman Rank Test dengan p value 0,009 dan coefisien correlation -0,56 yang menunjukkan bahwa terdapat hubungan dengan tingkatan sedang antara QNWL dengan kejadian burnout syndrome dengan arah hubungan negatif, artinya semakin baik QNWL maka semakin meminimalkan burnout syndrome. Salah satu faktor yang mempengaruhi QNWL adalah lingkungan kerja yang kondusif, oleh karena itu diharapkan kepada perawat untuk dapat menjalin kerjasama yang baik antar tim agar tercipta suasana kerja yang harmonis dan lingkungan kerja yang harmonis, dengan demikian maka akan menurunkan kejadian burnout pada perawat. One of the HR (Human Resources) in a hospital that has the longest time with patients is a nurse. In the provision of quality nursing care required a good performance. There are several things that affect performance, one of which is quality nursing work life (QNWL). Nurses with high workloads and monotonous work designs are prone to experiencing burnout syndrome (work stress). This study aims to determine the relationship of QNWL with burnout syndrome. Correlational and cross sectional design was used in this study. QNWL is an independent variable and burnout syndrome is the dependent variable. Data obtained through a questionnaire. The sample size of 30 respondents obtained by purposive sampling. Data analysis was performed with the Spearman Rank Test with p value 0.009 and the correlation coefficient of -0.56 which showed that there was a moderate level of correlation between QNWL and the incidence of burnout syndrome with the direction of the negative relationship, meaning that the better QNWL, the more minimizing burnout syndrome. One of the factors that influence QNWL is a conducive work environment, therefore it is expected that nurses will be able to establish good cooperation between teams in order to create a harmonious work atmosphere and a harmonious work environment, thereby reducing the incidence of burnout to nurse

The conclusion considers what systemic improvements may be made to queer communities and medical provisions, to allow the heterogeneity of non-binary identifying people to feel legitimised in their identities, and have equal access and experience of services. One of the most fundamental recommendations for medical practice that can be made is inspired by those communities that non-binary people expressed affinity with, such as bisexual and kink communities. Such spaces were sensitive and reflexive to gender plurality, and tended to construct language and space to be more fully inclusive. Gendered assumptions rooted in cisnormativity should be challenged within medical practice. Practices in gendered medicine may be similarly adjusted at the administrative level to improve preventative health screening for trans individuals. Much of this may be attained initially through the provision of training to both medical students and existent medical staff and administrators. This is followed by a critical reflection on gender affirming medical services, whereby the impact of a shift to an informed-consent focused model is considered. In order to optimise such recommendations, the limitations of this study and future necessary directions of enquiry are then addressed. This includes final methodological reflections and intersectional factors – such as the limited classed and racial diversity of the participants.

<sec><title>OBJECTIVE:</title><p> To evaluate the acceptability of an educational project using A porcine model of airway for teaching surgical cricothyroidotomy to medical students and medical residents at a university hospital in southern Brazil.</p></sec><sec><title>METHODS:</title><p> we developed a teaching project using a porcine model for training in surgical cricothyroidotomy. Medical students and residents received lectures about this surgical technique and then held practical training with the model. After the procedure, all participants filled out a form about the importance of training in airway handling and the model used.</p></sec><sec><title>RESULTS:</title><p> There were 63 participants. The overall quality of the porcine model was estimated at 8.8, while the anatomical correlation between the model and the human anatomy received a mean score of 8.5. The model was unanimously approved and considered useful in teaching the procedure.</p></sec><sec><title>CONCLUSION:</title><p> the training of surgical cricothyroidotomy with a porcine model showed good acceptance among medical students and residents of this institution.</p></sec>

In a previous article (Coldwell and Moerdyk, 1981) it was argued that many blacks in South Africa are at a disadvantage in the 'White man's world' of business and industry as a result of a number of cultural factors, some of which were described. In this paper, the suggestion is made that it is probably easier and more cost-effective to find ways in which both tasks and organizations can be restructured along socio-technical design lines, than it is to try to change the personality and value structures of the labour force to fit them to the demands of the work place. A number of cultural differences are outlined and suggestions put forward about possible ways in which jobs and organizations can be modified to make them more compatible with the characteristics of the work force. A closer 'match' between the individual and his work environment is seen as the key to enhanced productivity, reduced stress, and consequent improvements in both job satisfaction and company profitability.


Employees are affected not only by internal organizational environments but also by external ones such as family, community, and society. Social and cultural factors affect how employees are viewed by others in the organization as well as how they respond to their work environments. Immigrants, in particular, are affected by their acculturation processes. Thus, when employees negotiate organizational workplaces, they need to factor in the influence of socio-cultural forces. Stereotyping is one way in which the external environment is manifest in workplaces. It has been found to be persistent, influential, and deeply impactful on careers. Stereotypes are affected by social and cultural factors, and in turn, they affect workplaces by shaping employees' perceptions and experiences. At the same time, the external environment can also present positive attributes for employees, for instance by being a source of social and emotional capital.
