In recent decades, it has been increasingly recognized that soft skills play an important role in healthcare education and must be developed alongside other professional skills. Furthermore, the contribution of emotional intelligence (EI) to the ability to adapt to the changing environment of the 21st century has been widely agreed upon. Yet, despite these findings, social–emotional intelligence (SEI) and related skills skills are not widely developed in healthcare education settings, and if at all, only in a limited way. The present chapter presents a model and a methodological tool (SE-SD) for the development of social–emotional skills (SEI) as part of existing healthcare curricula, applying a broad view of the healthcare professions and associated skills. Soft, social–emotional, skills are positioned as a relevant and integral part of healthcare courses, thereby avoiding the need for significant changes in existing curricula. The SEI development process is implemented in three stages: preparation, action and assessment. The tool allows learners to embark on a self-directed, yet supervised, learning and development process, and can be applied to a single course or through the entire study program. The incorporation of a soft skill development process into healthcare education programs could help health systems to adapt and to cope better with the challenges of the 21st century, both present and future.

The career landscape has changed dramatically over the past two decades with the adoption of technology and an increasingly global and virtual workforce. As a result, schools and academic institutions must go beyond current curriculum to teach and develop the new skills and competencies that are required to keep pace with the demands of careers in the 21st century. This article examines the adoption of the Odyssey of the Mind program—a competitive creative problem-solving model—as a way to teach, develop, and demonstrate social emotional intelligence and other related soft skills that are necessary to master for current and future career success.

The article presents the results of the preliminary survey and pilot application of the methodological toolkit for the improvement of certain competencies, which are part of the soft skills of professionals in the long-term care sector in Bulgaria. Based on the survey the authors define 2 target competencies, namely conflict management and empathic interaction. These skills are considered a part of the scope of emotional intelligence and its constituent dimensions and authors use Daniel Goleman’s ability-based model as a base for their conceptual frame and theoretical explanations. In order to present their thesis, the authors perform a soft skill analysis of the long-term care sector; define the construct emotional intelligence and justify their choice of a theoretical model for the subsequent survey. On this basis, they develop a training design for the development of these skills and present the results achieved through its pilot application. The study includes 62 participants randomly divided into a test and control groups. The level of targeted skills is measured (before and after) and the authors report a significant increase in those skills (empathic interaction, net effect 1.87; conflict management, net effect 1.75). In conclusion, the authors open a discussion on the importance of emotional management as an essential part of any profession related to health care and underline its importance for the quality of caregiving services.

This research is explanatory research, intended to determine the relationship between soft skill and hard skill variables on the optimism of prospective graduates of Bengkulu Unihaz Management Study Program. The quantitative data of this study were obtained from questionnaires which were then processed into statistical analysis. The results of the analysis are known soft skill variables (X1) and hard skills (X2) have a strong and unidirectional relationship, and have a positive effect on the optimism variable of prospective graduates of the Unihaz Bengkulu study program. This is evidenced by the value of multiple correlation, multiple linear regression, t-test and f-test. Of the two independent variables hard skill contribution is greater than the soft skill. As a suggestion to improve students' hard skills and soft skills, they encourage them to be more active in research and community service, carry out excursion studies, namely visiting companies, entrepreneurs, crafts and other institutions that can foster their hard skills and soft skills, then directed to be more active in student organizations, youth and spirituality.

It has three focuses, i.e. introduction study, product design and development, and product effectivity test. The research data consists of field notes, feedback, comments and critics on the product from experts and practitioners. The data is analyzed by using domain analysis technique. The research results in developed product of participative, collaborative scientific writing teaching materials. It has specific characteristics that were different from conventional teaching materials, which have reflection of student participation in identifying purpose and selection of teaching materials that can be used as collaborative, democratic discussion topic for the students. The effectivity test results show that the developed product was better than conventional scientific writing teaching materials. Scientific writing teaching and learning process that utilizes the developed teaching material product significantly impacts on improved social, emotional intelligence, teaching and learning process quality, and scientific writing learning achievement of students. The research results show that all teaching materials used in teaching and learning process at higher education institutions, particularly at Study Program of Indonesian Language and Literature Education, should get through series of development process testing to produce excellent, high quality teaching materials. The research was aimed at enhanching social, emotional intelligence of students by developing participative, collaborative scientific writing teaching materials based on need analysis.
