Abstract This study aimed at investigating the perceptions of children attending preschool education about protecting the environment through drawings. This study was carried out with a qualitative research method. The study group of this study consisted of 80 children among 48-60-month-old children attending preschool education in Nicosia, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). In this study, the children were requested to explain their thoughts through drawings by asking the following question: “What can be done to protect the environment?” Then, the children were asked to describe their drawings orally. The descriptions of children were recorded in writing and analyzed. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that the most common perception about protecting the environment was “not littering”. In addition to this, it was determined that the children had different perceptions as “not wasting water”, “not polluting nature”, “not starting a fire”, “not polluting the sea”, and “not cutting the trees”. It was concluded that the children had a perception of protecting the environment only from these aspects with the drawings that included reduce and respect dimensions of the 7R model. It was also concluded that they did not have a perception in the dimensions of reuse, rethink, reflect, recycle, and redistribute.

Teacher-Carried Research as a Tool for Teachers' Professional GrowthInquiry among the schoolteachers' needs to be embedded, cultivated, sustained and nurtured as a tool for a better understanding of the processes in the education and for fostering teachers' ongoing professional growth. This study explores teachers' self-evaluation of their competency to conduct research and to incorporate it in the classroom. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods were employed to seek answers about teachers' engagement with research and to explore the factors of resistance for carrying out research in the classroom setting. This study also dwells upon some mechanisms that lead teachers to carry out research. The focus group interviews which were conducted reflect on the factors that encourage teachers to become more involved in the research and point to the advantages they perceive as emanating from the research. The qualitative part of inquiry reflects teachers' narrative ways of construction and reconstruction of their personal and professional knowledge. The authors discuss the processes that foster teachers to move from the fragmentary use of research strategies to the ability to live in the inquiry, practice new behaviours in the classroom, unlearn the old ones, reflect in action and stay open to a range of new initiatives.

Metadiscourse marker is one of determining indicators of the quality of the writers writing. Metadiscourse markers enable the writers to interact with the readers effectively. What commonly happens to many undergraduate students studying English as a foreign language is that they are not able to develop an engagement between themselves, their texts, and their readers. Thus, this study investigates the types of metadiscourse markers used by Unimus EFL learners in final project introduction sections, and markers that are frequently used by them in their writing. By using qualitative and quantitative research method, seven introduction sections of final project of Unimus EFL learners focusing on qualitative and qualitative research methods were chosen purposively. As result, the study revealed that in writing introduction sections, the students used various metadiscourse markers, including interactive resources (transitions, frame markers, endophoric markers, evidentials, and code glosses) and interactional resources (hedges, boosters, attitude markers, engagement markers, and self-mensions). Among those categories, interactive resources were found to be frequently used by the learners rather than interactional resources. It means that the writers tended to give attention to and guided the readers through the text by establishing their interpretations explicitly rather than involving the readers in the argument through the use of markers in interactional dimension.
