Integrated Organic Farming for Community Development Effectively Bridges the Gaps in Agricultural Instruction, Research, and Extension: Experience of a Public University in an Asian Developing Country

This study was conducted in 2011 to 2012 under the aegis of the Cagayan State University-Sanchez Mira campus and the National Economic Development Authority under its Productivity Enhancement Program.  The study employed technology-demonstration on organic farming as an entry point in the community. Using the descriptive design, 90 farmers were trained on organic farming technologies and structured survey questionnaire and interviews were used to document the results. The concept was designed to facilitate farmers’ adoption of sustainable and environment-friendly technology in organic farming by integrating the following components: On-Site School on Organic Farming, Technology-Demonstration, Extension and Technical Assistance, and Research. The on-site school included greenhouses, field research, and techno-demo plots on vegetable and livestock, vermi-compost, apiary, and houses for native pigs and chickens. To showcase organic farming practices, a field day was conducted which was attended by 165 farmers, entrepreneurs, and other stakeholders.  Finally, the results showed that 90%, 80%, and 85% of the farmers from the three municipalities followed the technologies demonstrated to them.  Around 85% of the total respondents reported an 80% increase in their monthly income.  This was attributed to production of food and farm inputs.  These results conclude that technology-demonstration was effective in bridging the gaps in agricultural instruction, research, and extension for the adaptation of farmers.

The area of international programs, as part of a rapidly developing university, has become increasingly important to Michigan State University, in East Lansing, in the last two decades. Faculty research abroad has been a primary factor in the growth of private and federal agency-sponsored technical assistance programs in educational activities overseas. Projects in Turkey, Pakistan, India, Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan, Okinawa, Guatemala, Colombia, Brazil, and Nigeria have been and are being conducted in the fields of business administration, public administration, agriculture, community development, education, and general university development. Continued outside financial assistance has enabled further enlargement of such programs on the campus as a whole. The initiation of the African Studies Center at Michigan State University in 1960 owes much to an offer from the U.S. Office of Education to support the teaching of West African languages on campus. By coincidence, this occurred at the same time that the University was engaged in two closely related projects: the ICA (AID) contract of establishing and developing the University of Nigeria at Nsukka and the initiation of a Ford Foundation-supported research program for African studies. New courses and additional teaching staff now allow for specialized courses in the departments of linguistics and Oriental and African languages, political science, history, anthropology, and geography. Much research is emerging from the Center's activity. In 1963-1964, for example, field research was under way in education, fisheries and wildlife, political science, economics, history, and geography, and there were four projects in the area of languages and linguistics.

The report shows the results of the Russian-Ethiopian historic and ethnographic expedition – a joint scientific project of two countries, successfully implemented in the early 1990s. Advanced results achieved by this expedition were much owed to participation of several leading Russian and Ethiopian scientific centers and universities – the Institute for African Studies, the Institute of Asian and African Countries at Lomonosov Moscow State University, Addis Ababa University and Institute for Ethiopian Studies, The Primakov Institute of World Economy and International Relations, and others. The participants of the expedition gathered and summarized a large body of data acquired during opinion polls, held in the course of the visits to a number of educational, medical, economic and manufacturing centers and organizations, including workshops, agricultural farms, banks, scientific centers. The collected scientific data has allowed, based on multi-factor analysis, to specify the nature of evolutionary processes in communal relations, efficiency of various aspects of federalism policy in a cosmopolitan country. Its value is reflected by applicability and sharp demand for a scientific view on one of the most troubled sides of social and political life of many African countries, and of the modern world. Based on the field research, a high number of articles and monographs have been prepared and published in the Russian Federation. They include “Report on Field Studies of Ethiopia Carried Out by Russian Historical, Ethnic, Sociological, Expedition, 1990–1992”, “Ethiopia: History, Culture and Ethnicity”, “Ethiopia: the Particular Features of Federalism”, “Drama in Modern Ethiopian Literature and Theatre”, “Mission in Ethiopia. African Policy of the USSR in the eyes of the Soviet Diplomat. 1956–1982”, two volumes of “Africa” encyclopedia and others.

Choosing a career as an Islamic teacher has many challenges as well as fun, not everyone is interested in this profession except those who have strong motivation. This study aims to find out the real motivation of students to select department of Islamic teaching education in public university, even though this department is widely offered by state and private Islamic universities. This study uses qualitative methods with a case study approach (case study design). Sources of data were taken from thirty informants through in-depth interviews selected using a purposive sampling technique, all informants were active students who chose the department of Islamic teaching education at Padang State University in 2017, 2018 and 2019. All interviews were analyzed thematically using the NVivo 10 qualitative analysis software. The results of the analysis showed that there were seven motivations of students to select department of Islamic teaching education. Those seven motivations are: i) self-will, ii) parents' encouragement, iii) choice to become a religious teacher, iv) job opportunities after graduation, v) desire to study at public universities vi) opportunity to spread dakwah, vii) to deepen Islamic knowledge. The results of this study can be used as preliminary data for subsequent researchers to examine this problem in different contexts and issues.

Satisfaction is determined by a set of external and internal factors of the individual, experiences, culture and the environment; it changes with goals and achievements. Here I analyze the results of an online survey of 1000 institutional email users from a public university in Costa Rica. Men are more satis ed with life in general and single, widowed or divorced people are less satis ed than those living with a partner. The greatest satisfaction is associated with tenure, being over 31 years old and having a high academic degree. Overall satisfaction is medium-high which is consistent with other local studies.

Smoking is one of the leading worldwide causes of cardiovascular disease and cancer development, and it not only affects the consumer but also those who are exposed to secondhand smoke. The economic cost of caring for the sick affects resources needed for education and prevention of addiction to cigarettes. This topic has been extensively studied in industrialized countries, but the information from Latin America is less available and seldom is based on inferential statistics applied to clear hypotheses, both central aspects in this article. To test several hypotheses on consumption and characteristics of patients we did an email survey to the entire staff of a state university in Costa Rica (N=2 850) in 2012. A 20% responded in a period of ten weeks and we applied a multiple regression to their answers. The results are statistically consistent with the hypothesis that being single, occupying high job positions and being male lead to increased consumption of tobacco and to an earlier start. To our knowledge, this is the first study using this methodology for the staff of any university in Central America.KEY WORDSFactors associated with smoking, Latin culture and smoking, use of tobacco by university staff, legal drugs, addiction.

Character education is an important element in the effort to prepare superior Indonesian human resources, it is of particular concern to be applied especially among students, there is a need for character education because the attitudes and behavior of the people and people of Indonesia now tend to ignore the noble values ​​of Pancasila which are highly respected and should be rooted in everyday attitudes and behaviors, values ​​such as honesty, politeness, togetherness and religious, gradually eroded by foreign cultures that tend to be hedonistic, materialistic, and individualistic, so that the noble character values ​​are ignored in the future if students and young people are not equipped with character education. Law students have their own challenges, especially in the era of globalization. This paper analyzes and illustrates the character strengthening program for law student activists in Semarang State University through several programs, namely public speaking, strengthening student idealism, strengthening advocacy capacitation and human rights assistance and self-motivation. This research is a field research with the object of research as activists of law students who are members of student organizations. This research confirms that the programs for strengthening the character of students experience several obstacles, one of which is the model used and a relatively short time. However, character education for student activists helps students to survive in real life as part of community members.

Personal satisfaction is an indicator of life quality. Labor and country conditions have their effect, but individual factors dominate satisfaction, including family, sex life, educational level and neighborhood. I surveyed 1000 staff members of a Costa Rican public university via email. The questionnaire considered satisfaction in the personal, labor and country level. I found no gender diference in the answers, but partnered people are more satis ed that divorcees and widowers. People with steady jobs and mature age are more satis ed. Important job factors are working schedule, amount of work, salary, infrastructure and interpersonal relationships. Life satisfaction results from the interaction of the above variables, not from a single factor.

This paper presents the study multiplier effects of government regulation of industrial development of the macro-region by the example of the Russian Arctic (Russian Arctic), made in the process of writing a doctoral dissertation Lapochkin LV on «Industrial policy of the Arctic zone of Russia: theoretical and methodological basis» and its discussion in the St. Petersburg State University of Economics. The novelty of the study is: first, in the view of the Russian Arctic as a macro-region; secondly, forming a conceptual model of a multiplier based on the criterion of national economic efficiency and system constraints, reflecting the direction of the structural industrial policy with regard to the development of non-oil economy; in the third, the formulation of multiplier effects in the fields and methods of exposure. The purpose of this article is to analyze the multiplier effects of government regulation of industrial development of the macro-region of the Arctic, as a basis for the construction of the multiplier model.
