The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different irrigation depth on initial development of Coffea canephora seedlings. The study was carried out at the farm Perobas, in the municipality of Rio Bananal, Espírito Santo, Brazil. The experimental design was completely randomized, with five treatments, comprising different depths of irrigation, being: 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5 and 15 mm dia-1. At 55 days after planting the seedlings were evaluated for characteristics:stem diameter, plant height, dry mass of aerial part and dry mass of the root system. The stem diameter and dry mass of the root system presented an inverse behavior to the increase of the irrigation depth. The plant height and dry mass of aerial part presented an increasing effect in relation to the variation of the irrigation depth. The 5 mm dia-1 irrigation depth provides the best result for development in the initial stages of the root system of the seedlings, while the irrigation depth of 15 mm dia-1 favored a greater accumulation of dry mass of aerial part of the seedlings.

GROWTH AND PRODUCTION OF MELON CULTIVATED IN GREENHOUSE UNDER DRIP IRRIGATION 2 ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different irrigation depths on melon growing in greenhouse. The experiment was conducted in an experimental area of the Engineering Departament of the Universidade Federal de Lavras, Lavras/MG. Melon (Cucumis melo L., var. Inodorus, cv. Vereda) was drip irrigated, in a two-day interval, with four different depths. Crop evapotranspiration (ETc) was calculated with a reduced class A pan evaporimeter (ECA). Irrigation depths were input using four different fractions of the net depth (LL): 0.5.LL, 0.75 LL, 1.0.LL and 1.25.LL. Each irrigation treatment was applied to three plants rows, each one containing 8 plants. Only 6 plants located at the central row of each treatment were used for measurement. Evaluated parameters were: plant height, stem diameter measures, average weight and fruit longidutinal and transversal diameters. Average weight and fruit longidutinal and transversal diameters were not significantly affected by irrigation depth; however, they presented smaller size than the one demanded by the market. Plant height average and stem diameter average measurements showed tendency to be higher on the irrigation depth equivalent to 0.75.LL. KEYWORDS: irrigation depth, Cucumis melo L., fruit weigth.

Campomanesia adamantium (Cambess.) Berg O. is a native of Savanna, popularly known as gabiroba, guavira, or gabiroba-do-campo, and has many uses, with its fruit being consumed fresh or processed. This study aimed to evaluate different doses of phosphorus and nitrogen in the initial development of gabiroba (Campomanesia adamantium) cultivated in pots. Five doses of phosphorus (0, 100, 200, 300, and 400kg ha-1 of P2O5) and three doses of nitrogen (0, 100, and 200 kg ha-1of N) were tested. The experimental design used was completely randomized in a 5x3 factorial scheme with six replications. The evaluations were carried out 120 days after plant emergence, and the variables analyzed were stem diameter, plant height, and number of leaves. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and F-test. The means were compared by the Tukey test at p0.05. Regression analyzes were adjusted for phosphorus doses. The gabiroba responds significantly to the addition of phosphorus, with the dose of 400 kg ha-1 of P2O5 providing the highest height and the dose of 300 kg ha-1 of P2O5 providing the greatest stem diameter and the number of leaves. Up to 120 days old, gabiroba seedlings do not respond significantly to nitrogen fertilization.

Zucchini culture is slightly sensitive to salinity and is among the ten vegetables of highest economic value, with characteristics of precocity and easy cultivation. These characteristics are some of the reasons for the expansion of its cultivation among small producers. Thus, the objective was to evaluate the effect of different levels of salinity in the irrigation water and biofertilizer types on the initial growth of the zucchini (Cucurbita pepo L.) culture. The experiment was carried out in the full sunlight in a randomized block design, in a 5x2 factorial arrangement. The treatments consisted of a combination of five types of biofertilizers (quail, sheep, mixed, bovine, and crab) and two salinity levels of the irrigation water (0.8 and 2.5 dS m-1), with five replicates. At 30 days after transplanting, the following variables were evaluated: electrical conductivity of the substrate, plant height, number of leaves, roots length, stem diameter, leaf area, chlorophyll content, dry mass of the aerial part, root dry mass, and total dry mass. Salt stress negatively interferes with the accumulation of zucchini plant biomass. Quail, bovine, and sheep biofertilizers are more efficient about plant height, number of leaves, and stem diameter. The sheep biofertilizer attenuates the salt stress for the dry mass of the aerial part, the root, and the total dry mass.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the development of vetiver grass (Chrysopogon zizanioides L. Roberty) cultivated in PVC columns and fertilized with bovine manure levels under different ambient conditions. The experiment was installed in a completely randomized design, with three replications, in a factorial scheme 5 x 2 being five levels of bovine manure (0%, 10%, 20%, 30% and 40%) and two types of environments (free and protected environment with 80% opening shade), totalizing 30 experimental units. Evaluations were carried out regarding plant height and number of shoots to 15, 30, 45 and 60 days after transplanting (DAT). At 60 DAT at the end of the experiment, the plants were separated to determine the root length and the production of green and dry mass of the aerial part and the root. The results obtained showed that the absence of bovine manure contributed to the greater development of the root system of vetiver grass plants. The 10% level of bovine manure provided a greater number of sprouts and increase in the green mass of the aerial part and green dry mass of the root. The free environment provided the greatest development of vetiver grass plants.

The present work aimed to evaluate the influence of use, as well as to determine adequate doses in organic fertilization of the bokashi type in the cultivation of two basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) cultivars. Seeds from the collection of the Floriculture Laboratory of the Phytotechnics Department of the Federal University of Ceará were used. The treatments used were arranged in a randomized block design (RBD), arranged in a 2x5 factorial scheme, consisting of two cultivars of basil (Genovese and Anão) and five doses of Bokashi, namely: 0, 3, 6, 9 and 18 g.L-1. Plants that received no dose (0 g.L-1) served as a control treatment. Each treatment contained 5 repetitions, with the plot consisting of 7 pots, one plant per pot, the useful unit a pot with a basil seedling. From the transplant, applications of bokashi were started in doses of 0, 3, 6, 9, and 18 g.L-1 in both cultivars. Both applications were performed every 20 days after the first application of Bokashi. Fivety five days after transplantation in the final pot, the following variables were analyzed: plant height, stem diameter, fresh and dry mass of the aerial part and the root. The 9 g.L-1 dose of Bokashi showed the best results for the variables analyzed for both cultivars, in addition to being efficient when compared to the control, in which the vegetative growth was incipient.

Corn (Zea mays L.) is one of the most cultivated grains in the world. It provides widely used products such as food, feed, raw materials for industry and ethanol, mainly due to the quantity and nature of its reserves accumulated in the grains. The objective of this research was to evaluate different depths of sowing and the use of different initial methods of soil preparation for growing corn. A randomized-complete blocks design was applied in a split plot with subsoiling, tillage, rotary hoe, ploughing, manual weeding and three sowing depths. Analysis of variance showed a significant difference (p < 0.01) of stem diameter (SD), plant height (PH), root fresh mass (RFM), root dry mass (RDM), aerial dry mass (ADM), aerial fresh mass (AFM), while number of leaves (NL) showed no differences statistically. Regarding to stem diameter, the methods with subsoiling, ploughing and rotating hoe showed the best results. In relation to plant height, the treatments of subsoiling, tillage, ploughing and rotating hoe had the best performances. The use of the subsoiling method showed the best results between the characteristics of the plant and corn yield. The corn yield presented better yields with the subsoiled and rotary hoe preparation.

EXCESS OF IRON ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF CITRUS ROOTSTOCKS ABSTRACT: The objective of this work was evaluated the effects of iron excess on the emergence and initial development of citrus rootstock genotypes. A randomized complete block design (DBC), factorial 5x2, with five rootstocks and two substrates, repeated four times, with useful plot of 15 containers was adopted. Genotypes consisted of the 'Santa Cruz' Rangpur lemon; 'Riverside', 'San Diego' and 'Indio' citrandarins, as well as 'Sunki Tropical' tangerine, grown with or without iron excess in substrate. The percentages of emergency (PE) were analyzed and the rate of emergency (IVE) was calculated. Biometry was performed at 30, 60 and 90 days after sowing (DAS), by measuring the height (H) and stem diameter (D) of the seedlings, determining fresh (MV) and dry mass (DM). The excess of iron induced underdevelopment, and even mortality of already emerged seedlings, which reflected directly in the results, however, all genotypes presented an emergency higher to 75%, standing out ’San Diego’ citrandarin, with greater height and more stem thick, and the ‘Riverside’ citrandarin with greater sensitivity to stress, registering the lowest values. 'San Diego’ citrandarin demonstrated stress tolerance and developed satisfactorily, requiring studies that evaluate maintenance of inferred characteristics in combination with cultivar canopy. Keywords: protected environment, citriculture, grafting, stress, seedlings.
