Cassia alata, commonly known as candle bush, ringworm bush is an extensively distributed plant of the family Leguminosea. It is an annual and occasionally biannual herb, flowering in the sunshine and humid areas, with an average height of 1 to 4m. Biological activity in plants has been claimed to be effective as antidiabetic, antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, antimicrobial, analgesic, anti-ulcer, antiviral, antidepressants, hepatoprotective, antimalarial, anthelmintic, cardiovascular, and anesthetic properties. The ethanolic extract of plant was subjected first time for neutralization of snake venom activity. Primary phytochemical screening shows the existence of alkaloid, steroids, phenols, flavonoids, and triterpenoids. Ethanolic extract of Cassia alata plants was tested for antivenom activity against Daboia russelii venom. Various dose levels of leaf extract 200 and 400mg/kg showed significant neutralization of hemorrhagic activity, and at 400mg/kg leaf extract showed significant necrotizing activity in rats.

Objective: To objective of this work was to perform phytochemical qualitative and quantitative analyzes of the main secondary metabolites in the root of Berberis microphylla.Methods: The extracts of B. microphylla root were tested through phytochemical screening and the quantification of the most important constituents was carried out using spectrophotometric and gravimetric techniques.Results: Phytochemical screening of both extracts showed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, cardiac glycosides, saponins, terpenes,and tannins, which are pharmacologically important. Quantification of the major phytochemicals groups showed that the ethanolic extract contains 3.9% alkaloids, 0.46% flavonoids, 9.53% tannins, and 3.60% saponins. Similarly, the methanolic extract contains 6.61% alkaloids, 0.41% flavonoids, 7.40% tannins, and 1.43% saponins.Conclusion: This is the first time that the presence of tannins, flavonoids, and saponins in this plant has been reported. The medicinal properties of the root of B. microphylla may exist due to the presence secondary metabolites.

Objective: The aim of this study to investigate the Preliminary Phytochemical Screening and evaluation of Muscle relaxant activity of ethanolic extract of Zingiberofficinale (EEZO) belonging to the family Zingiberaceae using Swiss albino mice in comparison with that of standard drug (Lorazepam).Methods: The phytochemical screening of the EEZO was done as per the standard methods. Then the extract was evaluated for its muscle relaxant activity compared with Control which is Normal saline (0.9% NaCl solution) at a dose of 10 ml/kg and standard drug Lorazepam at a dose of 10 mg/kg p. o by using Rota-rod apparatus. Twenty mice were taken of either sex and are divided into four groups and each group contains five animals. The first group was considered as control, the second group considered as standard and the third and fourth group received extracts (EEZO) at a dose of 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg p. o respectively. All the preparations were administered orally.Results: The Preliminary Phytochemical screening of Ethanolic plant extract of Zingiberofficinale showed the presence of alkaloids, Carbohydrates, phlobotannins, flavonoids, glycosides, saponins, tannin and terpenoids and absence of steroids. The two doses of EEZO i.e. 100 mg/kg (7.8±0.421 sec) and 200 mg/kg (3.07±0.385) significantly reduced the fall of time in the Rota-rod apparatus as compared to control (48.67±1.112) with p value<0.0001. The result is quite satisfying when compared with the standard drug i.e. 10 mg/kg p. o. (6.2±0.331).Conclusion: The result of the given study demonstrated that the ethanolic extract of Zingiber officinale is having Dose Dependent Muscle Relaxant activity.

The total ethanolic extract (TEE) of Carduncellus eriocephalus Boiss. var. albiflora Gauba showed antioxidant, antihyperglycaemic, and antihyperlipidaemic activities, which were attributed to the n-butanol fraction (BF). Chemical investigation of the BF led to the isolation of a new flavonoid, kaempferol-3- O-β-D-galactopyranoside-6″-sulfate (16), and a phenyl propenyl glycoside, 1-β-D-glucopyranoside-3-phenyl-2-propenol (rosin) (6), which is reported for the first time in the family Asteraceae. Chrysoeriol (1), 3′- O-methylorobol (2), luteolin (3), quercetin (4), myricetin (5), kaempferol 3- O-α-L-arabinopyranoside (7), kaempferol 3- O-β-D-glucopyranoside (8), quercetin 3- O-β-D-glucopyranoside (12), luteolin 7- O-β-D-rutinoside (13), quercetin 3- O-β-D-rutinoside (14), apigenin 7- O-β-D-rutinoside (15), and 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid (17) were isolated for the first time from the genus Carduncellus, in addition to apigenin 7- O-β-D-glucopyranoside (9), chryseriol 7- O-β-D-glucopyranoside (10) and luteolin 7- O-β-D-glucopyranoside (11), which have been previously reported for C. eriocephalus.

Screening of phytochemicals provides the potentiality for serving several illnesses. The current investigation was carried out the antibacterial activity and phytochemical screening of ethanolic extract of leaf, flower and stem of Aerva lanata commonly known as Sirupeelai through spectroscopic analysis. In this screening the major components are carbohyrates, aminoacids, alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, terpenoids and cocumarins. The antibacterial activity showed maximum sensitivity in leaf extract of Staphylococcus aureus(16mm). The FTIR spectroscopic analysis revealed that the functional groups were alkene, alkyne, amines which showed major peaks. Based on antibacterial activity and functional group analysis, GC-MS was carried out in leaf extract of A. lanata. The current report indicated 27 bioactive compounds, in that Uridine is a major peak which showed antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-cancerous activity etc.

The objectives of this work were to evaluate the antioxidant and hepatoprotective activities in the oxidative stress model induced by paracetamol in male Swiss mice, to evaluate the hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic action and to identify flavonoids in the leaves ethanolic extract from Trattinnickia rhoifolia. By the LC-MS / MS method, eight flavonoids were identified in the hydromethanolic (HM) and ethyl acetate (EA) fractions, except for Amentoflavone, the flavonoids Apigenin, Canferol, Luteolin, Quercetin, Quercetin-3-β-d-glucoside, Rutin and Taxifoline were identified for the first time in this species. These fractions were evaluated for antioxidant capacity (DPPH— test) and their protective effect in vivo through the analysis of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione-s-transferase, non-protein thiols, ascorbic acid, TBARS and carbonylated proteins. The data showed that EA has antioxidant capacity and superior oxidative stress repair in chemical and biological analyzes, besides hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic action. Thus, the present work contributes significantly to the literature, since it is the first study that identifies the chemical constituents and pharmacological properties of leaves extract from T. rhoifolia.

The aim of this study was to screen the phytochemical constituents, isolate and elucidate the structure of chloroform extracts from the leaves of Maesa lanceolata. The qualitative phytochemical analysis of the leaf extract of Maesa lanceolata was done following standard procedures and the tests revealed the presence of cardiac glycosides and saponins in the crude extracts. The chloroform extract of the leaves of M. lanceolata led to the isolation of one compound, C1. Structure determination was accomplished by means of spectroscopic methods (IR, 13C and 1H NMR). According to the spectral data (IR, 1HNMR, 13CNMR and DEPT), probably Myrsenene was identified which is reported for the first time from M. lanceolata.

Abstract β-sitosterol and two triterpenoids: ursolic acid acetate and platanic acid have been isolated from ethanolic extract of Vitex trifola leaves. β-sitosterol was previously isolated from the leaves, stem and seeds of Vitex trifolia. Ursolic acid acetate has been isolated for the first time in this plant species. Platanic acid has been reported for the first time in Vitex trifolia and even in the family of this plant: Verbenaceae. These compounds were characterized using spectroscopic methods including 1D-1HNMR, 13CNMR, ESIMS and 2D-NMR (HSQC, HMBC, COSY) experiments and confirmed by comparison of their NMR data with those from the literature. A preliminary molluscicidal test for ethanol, chloroform and n-hexane extracts of leaves of Vitex trifolia against Biomphalaria alexandrina adult snails showed that ethanol extract of leaves with LC50 value 26.42 mg/l (27.92 mg/l - 24.99 mg/l) was more effective than n-hexane extract with LC50 value 35.48 mg/l (43.81 mg/l - 28.72mg/l) and chloroform extract with LC50 value 46.77 mg/l (53.59 mg/l - 43.81 mg/l) after 24 h exposure.

ABSTRACT This research analyzed the major chemical constituents present in the ethanolic extract of the leaves of Bridelia montana (ROXB) WILLD. The leaves of Bridelia montana were collected, powdered, de-fatted with n-hexane and then extracted with 90%ethyl alcohol. Preliminary phytochemical screening of the ethanolic leaf extract of Bridelia montana showed the presence of chemical constituents like alkaloids, glycosides, phenolic compounds, tannins and resins. HPTLC fingerprint analysis of the extract was carried out using CAMAG HPTLC system equipped with Linomat 5 sample applicator, UV cabinet and WIN-CATS-4 software. The results from HPTLC fingerprint analysis of the ethanolic leaf extract of Bridelia montana revealed the presence of 6 polyvalent constituents.

Plants are reservoirs of bioactive compounds with the potential for pharmaceutical use. In this study, the secondary metabolites of Neonauclea formicaria leaf crude ethanolic extract were determined using phytochemical screening. The plant's leaf extract was then used to test its angiogenesis activity using the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assay. Four concentrations of the extract were prepared—0.1 mg/L, 1.0 mg/L, 10.0 mg/L, and 100.0 mg/L and were topically applied on the CAM. Phytochemical screening revealed that N. formicaria leaves contain heavy amounts of flavonoids and tannins, while alkaloids, saponins, and steroids were present in trace amounts. The crude ethanolic extract was anti-angiogenic, as indicated by the significant decrease of vascular density at higher concentrations (P<0.05).  The 100 mg/L extract concentration showed the highest vascular inhibition (50.93%) among the other concentrations, suggesting its angiopreventive potential (P<0.05). Further investigation on the embryo's gross morphometry revealed no significant effects in the weight, crown-rump length, head-beak length, forelimb length, and hind limb length. Also, these indices were not associated with the angiogenesis activity on the CAM. Further studies exploring the specific metabolites of the different plant parts of N. formicaria and the plant's angiopreventive potential are recommended.

Aim: Ocimum gratissimum is commonly used as food and health purposes. This study is aimed at evaluating the bioactive compounds and antibacterial activity of leaf extract of O. gratissimum against Salmonella species. Methodology: The Phytochemical screening of O. gratissimum was conducted using standard methods. Screening for antibacterial activity of the leaf extracts against Salmonella species was determined using agar well diffusion method. An in-vivo toxicity study was carried out with albino rats. Results: The phytochemical screening revealed the presence of saponins, tannins, cardiac glycoside, flavonoid, glycosides, alkaloid, volatile oils and steroids. A zone of inhibition of 14mm was recorded against the organisms using ethanolic extract with a concentration of 100 mg/ml and the lowest was recorded against Salmonella paratyphi with the concentration of 25 mg/ml of the ethanolic extract. Zone of inhibition of 9.00 mm and 10.0mm was recorded against S. typhi and S. paratyphi on a concentration of 100 mg/ml of the aqueous extract. A minimum inhibitory concentration of 100 mg/ml and 25 mg/ml of the aqueous and ethanolic extract of the leaf was recorded. After the toxicity test, no death was recorded after 2 (two) weeks. Conclusion: The leaf extract of O. gratissimum shows promising potentials in the treatment of infectious diseases associated with Salmonlla typhi and Salmonella paratyphi, due to its antimicrobial activity and low toxicity. However, further studies are needed to non-polar solvents to isolate other bioactive compounds as well as identify the active metabolites responsible for these activities.
