How do we identify and understand transformative agency in the quotidian that is not contained in formal, or even informal structures? This article investigates the ordinary agency of Palestinian inhabitants in the violent context of the divided city of Jerusalem. Through a close reading of three ethnographic moments I identify creative micropractices of negotiating the separation barrier that slices through the city. To conduct this analytical work I propose a conceptual grid of place, body and story through which the everyday can be grasped, accessed and understood. ‘Place’ encompasses the understanding that the everyday is always located and grounded in materiality; ‘body’ takes into account the embodied experience of subjects moving through this place; and ‘story’ refers to the narrative work conducted by human beings in order to make sense of our place in the world. I argue that people can engage in actions that function both as coping mechanisms (and may even support the upholding of status quo), and as moments of formulating and enacting agential projects with a more or less intentional transformative purpose. This insight is key to understanding the generative capacity of everyday agency and its importance for the macropolitics of peace and conflict.

The World War can be justifiably called the great seminal catastrophe of the 20th century, because the war that should have ended every further war, just disseminated the seeds of another cataclysm. From this point of view it is comprehensible why lots of historians deal with the named period. Numerous monographies and articles that deal with the destructing and stimulating eff ect of the Great War have seen the light of day. However, the mentioned works usually have serious defi cenceis, as most of them deal only with the battlefi elds, and a small proportion deals with the question of everyday life and hinterland, and the ordeals of the POWs are superfi cially described. In case of Hungary, the more serious researches related to POWs only started at the time of the centenary. This is why we can still read in some Serbian literatures about the people annihilating endeavors of the „huns” of Austria–Hungary. My choice of subject was therefore justified by the reasons outlined above. In my presentation I expound on briefly introducing the situations in the austro–hungarian POW camps. Furthermore, the presentation depicts in detail the everyday life, the medical and general treatment, clothing supply, the question of the minimal wages and working time of the prisoner labour forces. Lastly, I am depicting the problem of escapes and issues dealing POWs marriage and citizenship requests.

ABSTRACT The outbreak of pneumonia known as coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has occurred in China since December 2019 and spread rapidly across the world. Pediatric medical workers have a serious imbalance doctor–patient ratio in China; they have accumulated experience during the fight against COVID-19; however, some flaws were revealed in their current medical system. Meanwhile, these problems were also reported in other countries. Thus far, the outbreak of COVID-19 is still rampant across the world. The experience from anti-COVID-19 could be useful and teach us to provide better medical services for Chinese children and prepare for similar public emergencies in the future. Furthermore, it also provides guidance for pediatric medical staff in managing COVID-19 in other developing countries.

Reciprocidade. Cidade. PICHAÇÃO/GRAFFITI IN SANTA MARIA:CLASSIFYING SYSTEMS, SEMANTICAL OVERFLOWS AND WAYS TO NARRATE THE CITY.   Abstract This article presents some itineraries of the ethnographic research that I developed in the master degree, in which I sought to understand the construction of the intelligibility of the events about the pichação/graffiti in Santa Maria. I write about the preliminary phase of participant observation, starting in a street art shop, an experience that underlines the importance of reciprocal ties and the logic of classificatory systems (the ways of putting the world in structure, of ordering the sensitive chaos intellectively) around the pichação/graffiti. From this indoor experience to other scenarios of interaction with pichadores/graffiti artists, through the streets, among which I highlight a Sunday in the north zone of the city. Since the fieldwork and a post-structuralist point of view about estrtuturalism, we can see inversions, recombinations and semantic overflows of binary categories (legal / illegal, clean / dirty, right / wrong, light / shadow, beautiful / ugly , visible / invisible ...) of the universal act of classifying and, above all, different ways of constructing the senses of living and narrating the city, around the pichação/graffiti. Keywords Pichação/graffiti. Classification systems. Semantic overflows. Reciprocity. City.

In ancient times, the city of Urfa suffered serious flood disasters due to the Karakoyun river which surrounded the city on the north and west sides. In order to prevent the recurrence of such disasters, in 525, the Byzantine Emperor Justinian had built a huge wall of stone (Justinian wall) to the northwest of the city that conducted the river to the north and east walls of the city. He also constructed an artificial channel and three bridges which are known as the Justinian system. This system has been used by the many civilizations that have occupied the city, since the 6th century. Each civilization added some new water structures to the system and carried out some renovations to it. The system, being still in use, defended the city against moderate size floods and survived for 1,500 years. In this paper, the Justinian system is evaluated from the hydraulic point of view together with its ongoing functionality. It is interesting that although the cultural structures of the civilizations settled in the city do not have the same characteristics, the water structures have similar features in terms of hydraulic and architectural perspectives.

Abstract Deposit salt in Romania has extremely important reserves, considered even inexhaustible at the current exploitation level. The biggest salt resources are found in the intra-Carpathian arch, represented by Transylvania and Maramures. Most sources of salt outcrops are disseminated on the edge of the Transylvania Depression, in the diapir folds formed following salt migration. The salt mines – Turda, Praid, Ocna Mures, Ocna Dej, Ocna Sibiu, Cojocna, Ocna Sugatag – represented an important source of incomes, reason for which important human settlements formed around them. All these localities have turned nowadays into balneal and climacteric resorts that fully use the beneficial effect of the atmosphere within galleries (Praid, Turda). The most important incomes from tourism are represented by the galleries of the mines of Turda (one of the 10 wonders of the modern world) and Praid. The balneal and climacteric resorts also developed around the salt lakes installed in the areas of collapsed mines: Sovata, Ocna Sibiu, Ocna Dej, Cojocna. The most well known human settlements and the most important balneal and climacteric resorts, implicitly, are disseminated on the external branch of the Transylvania Depression (Sovata, Praid, Ocna Mures, Baile Figa, Cojocna thermae, Ocna Dej, Ocna Sibiu) and of the Maramures Depression (Ocna Sugata, Costiui, Vad). The oldest mining exploitation is situated at Figa (county of Bistrita-Nasaud) was founded around the year AD 3000. From this point of view, it is one of the oldest mining exploitations on Earth. The existence of the world-important archaeological site can invigorate the development of the surrounding localities, but mostly of the city of Beclean.

This essay examines the image of darkness present in Kipling’s short story ‘On the City Wall’ and links it to various underlying themes in the story. One of the themes is the courtesan culture of Lahore. Lalun is a courtesan and is as much full of beauty, mystery and enigma as the city of Lahore where she dwells, or the quaint location of her house which is paradoxically situated on the city’s wall. The essay also explores the role of the semi-informed narrator in the story, who can be Kipling himself or someone who is narrating the story to the readers. This narrator-character is tricked by Lalun to help an escaped prisoner get out from the city under the very noses of the policemen who are trying the control the riots on the streets. The narrator’s gullibility and his lack of complete knowledge of his actions can also stand for the entire process of writing, where the narrated event remains partially shrouded in the haze of semi-visibility. Just as Lalun’s real motives remain unknown to the narrator and the readers till the end of the story, similarly the narrator’s use of authorial perspective entails a semi-reliability of the subjective point of view. Finally, the essay takes up the image of darkness and traces its presence in Kipling’s life and writings. The world of the night is an integral part of Kipling’s vision of an Indian self, and is further accentuated in the unfathomable person of the courtesan.
