Abstract The objective of the present study is to analyze the spatiality of commercial dynamics of the "Upper Town" of Salvador da Bahia, Brazil. This former fashionable retail area in the Old Center of the city has gone through several successive phases of development during the last decades, but still today constitutes the densest commercial area of the city. On a practical level, our objective is to characterize the commercial dynamics of the area, based on three interrelated factors in the formation of dynamics: organization of retail firms; personal and professional characteristics of the merchants; perceptions and opinions of the merchants. On a theoretical level, our objective is to discuss the validity of dualist theories of Third World urban economies, based on the empirical results of this specific case of a total area, the Upper Town, that englobes both a priori modern and traditional commercial structures, i.e. new shopping malls and old shopping streets. Finally, in order to stress the pragmatic character of the study, our objective is to evaluate the difficulties and the potentialities of the retail area. The analyses reveal a very heterogeneous and internally hierarchized Upper Town. The shopping malls and the principal avenue, Sete de Setembro, present the highest intensity of activities and concentrate the largest firms that form a link between these commercial spaces. In spite of this structural similarity between the malls and some parts of the shopping streets, locational and functional strategies of the small firms, as well as the characteristics of merchants express a dissociation between the spaces. The predominance of small firms, the qualitative heterogeneity of the establishments, problems of inftastructure and security, and the lack of dynamism of the merchants of shopping streets stand out as the ftagilities of the Upper Town. On the other hand, rescue of historical and cultural values, the extremely diversified scale of retail and service activities, proximity of tourist areas and location in a point of convergence of transportation should constitute the bases for future development of the area.

Within the scope of this article shopping malls were discussed as a building type and the evolution of a building type was tried to be witnessed within a twenty-five year period by comparing the early and late examples of shopping malls in Istanbul. The change of Istanbul’s shopping culture / spaces and the inclusion of shopping centers into the practice of architecture as a building type are briefly mentioned . Each of the selected malls were separately examined in terms of location, concept, space organization and other functions included, and in the fourth section both early and late examples were evaluated together in the same terms with a holistic perspective. The effect of shopping malls, the number of which constantly increases in Istanbul, on the city and its architecture is highly important. These massive bodies of buildings play a significant role in the formation and even definition of the new settlement areas of the city, and generate new areas of attraction. Due to these reasons, from location to architectural characteristic, from schedule to interior quality, they need to be designed punctiliously and with the consideration of the effects at all levels.

The main aim of presented study was to analyze and to assess accessibility of shopping malls as traffic generators in the city of Krakow (Poland) as well as to compare calculated results in the perspective of the whole amount of shopping centers. The scope of research work includes the calculation of two kinds of accessibility measures: distance measures based on the straight line (Euclidean distance) and real distances and potential accessibility measures also based on the same distances and, additionally, weighted by characteristics of shopping malls and transport districts. The data from the OpenStreetMap project was used to get information concerning transport network and two kinds of above-mentioned distances. At the end of article a possible usage of obtained results and the further development of topic are described.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/CIT2016.2016.4117

Palavras- chave: Imperatriz. Centralidade Urbana. Shoppings Centers.     NEW COMMERCIAL FORMS AND EXPRESSIONS OF URBAN CENTRALITY IN IMPERATRIZ – MA: an analysis of the installation and dynamism of shopping centers ABSTRACT In this article it is discussed the key aspects of the new commercial forms and expressions of the urban centrality of Imperatriz. At first, some considerations about the urban phenomenon in Brazil, that poses diverse and complex, are made. This scenario was influenced by different determinations; some of them were the development of many economic activities, that promoted greater dynamism of the cities, as in the case of industrialization, that favored the expansion of this process in the Center-South of this country, the modernization of the countryside in the Central-West, influenced by advancement and the use of new techniques. The reflections of this phenomenon is visible in the Amazon reality, the region where it enters the city of Imperatriz, which is the object of this study. Because of that, we had the anxiety to understand the expressions of the urban centrality developed by this city by the installing and dynamism of the shopping malls. This research is supported by the adoption of the theoretical Marxist approach and on the use of the dialectical method for understanding the urban reality is built in a contradictory way. Those methodological constructions were based on the contributions provided by Trivinos (2011) and Gil (2008). As techniques for data collection the simple observation and the adoption of semi-structured interviews were used. Keywords: Imperatriz. Urban centrality. Shopping malls. Centres commerciaux.

In the history of urban thought, density has been closely indexed to the idea of citylife. Drawing on commuters’ experiences and perceptions of crowds in and around Tokyo’s Shinjuku Station, this article offers an ethnographic perspective on the relationship between urban crowds and life in the city. We advance understandings of the relations between the crowd and citylife through three categories of ‘crowd relations’– materiality, negotiation and inclusivity – to argue that the multiplicity of meanings which accrue to people’s encounters with crowds refuses any a priori definitions of optimum levels of urban density. Rather, the crowd relations gathered here are evocations of citylife that take us beyond the tendency to represent the crowd as a particular kind of problem, be it alienation, exhaustion or a threshold for ‘good’ and ‘bad’ densities. The portraits of commuter crowds presented capture the various entanglements between human and non-human, embodiment and mobility, and multiculture and the civic, through which citylife emerges as a mode of being with oneself and others.

Gravity inversion, as a static potential field inversion, has inherent ambiguity with low vertical resolution. In order to reduce the nonuniqueness of inversion, it is necessary to impose the apriori constraints derived by other geophysical inversion, drilling or geological modeling. Based on the a priori normalized gradients derived from seismic imaging or reference models, a structure-guided gravity inversion method with a few known point constraints is developed for mapping density with multiple layers. The cubic B-spline interpolation is used to parameterize the forward modeling calculation of the gravity response to smooth density fields. A recently proposed summative gradient is used to maximize the structural similarity between the a priori and inverted models. We first demonstrate the methodology, followed by a synthetic fault model example to confirm its validity. Monte Carlo tests and uncertainty tests further illustrate the stability and practicality of the method. This method is easy to implement, and consequently produces an interpretable density model with geological consistency. Finally, we apply this method to the density modeling of the Chezhen Depression in the Bohai Bay Basin. Our work determines the distribution of deep Lower Paleozoic carbonate rocks and Archean buried hills with high-density characteristics. Our results are consistent with the existing formation mechanism of the “upper source-lower reservoir” type oil-gas targets.
