Cardiotocography (CTG) is the widely used cost-effective, non-invasive technique to monitor the fetal heart and mother’s uterine contraction pressure to assess the wellbeing of the fetus. The most important parameters of fetal heart is the baseline upon which the other parameters viz. acceleration, deceleration and variability depend. Accurate classification of the baseline into either normal, bradycardia or tachycardia is thus important to assess the fetal-health. Since visual estimation has its limitations, the authors use various Machine Learning Algorithms to classify the baseline. 110 CTG traces from CTU-UHB dataset, were divided into three subsets using stratified sampling to ensure that the sample is the accurate depiction of the population. The results were analyzed using various statistical methods and compared with the visual estimation by three obstetricians. FURIA provided greatest accuracy of 98.11%. From the analysis of Bland-Altman Plot FURIA was also found to have best agreement with physicians’ estimation.

Abstract Background: Two EQ-5D-3L (3L) value sets (developed in 2014 and 2018) co-exist in China. The study examined the level of agreement between index scores for all the 243 health states derived from them at both absolute and relative levels and compared the responsiveness of the two indices. Methods: Intraclass correlations coefficient (ICC) and Bland-Altman plot were adopted to assess the degree of agreement between the two indices at the absolute level. Health gains for 29,403 possible transitions between pairs of 3L health states were calculated to assess the agreement at the relative level. Their responsiveness for the transitions was assessed using Cohen effect size.Results:The mean (standard deviation, SD) value was 0.427 (0.206) and 0.649 (0.189) for the 3L2014 and 3L2018 index scores, respectively. Although the ICC value showed good agreement (i.e., 0.896), 88.9% (216/243) of the points were beyond the minimum important difference limit according to the Bland-Altman plot. The mean health gains for the 29,403 health transitions was 0.234 (3L2014 index score) and 0.216 (3L2018 index score). The two indices predicted consistent transitions in 23,720 (80.7%) of 29,403 pairs. For the consistent pairs, Cohen effective size value was 1.05 (3L2014 index score) or 1.06 (3L2018 index score); and the 3L2014 index score only yielded 0.007 more utility gains. However, the results based on the two measures varied substantially according to the direction and magnitude of health change. Conclusion:The 3L2014 and 3L2018 index scores are not interchangeable. The choice between them is likely to influence QALYs estimations.

The present study evaluated a newly developed computational tool (CT) to assess the alveolar bone space and the alveolar crest angle and compares it to dentist assessment (GT). The novel tool consisted of a set of processes initiated with image enhancement, points localization, and angle and area calculations. In total, we analyzed 148 sites in 39 radiographic images, and among these, 42 sites were selected and divided into two groups of non-periodontitis and periodontitis. The alveolar space area (ASA) and alveolar crest angle (ACA) were estimated. The agreement between the computer software and the ground truth was analyzed using the Bland–Altman plot. The sensitivity and specificity of the computer tool were measured using the ROC curve. The Bland–Altman plot showed an agreement between the ground truth and the computational tool in all of the parameters assessed. The ROC curve showed 100% sensitivity and 100% specificity for 12.67 mm of the alveolar space area. The maximum percentage of sensitivity and specificity were 80.95% for 13.63 degrees of the alveolar crest angle. Computer tool assessment provides accurate disease severity and treatment monitoring for evaluating the alveolar space area (ASA) and the alveolar crest angle (ACA).

Purpose: To evaluate the ocular biometric parameters in patients with constant and intermittent exotropia by the measurement of swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) optical biometer OA-2000 and comparing it with the normal control subjects.Design: Cross-sectional case-control study.Participants: Fifty-five constant and 24 intermittent patients with exotropia with central fixation and 77 orthotropic normal control participants aged 4–18 years old.Methods: Non-contact and high-resolution optical biometric OA-2000 measurements were conducted under uniform ambient light conditions. The statistical analysis included intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), Bland-Altman plot, and independent t-tests.Main Outcome Measures: Spherical equivalent (SE), ocular biological parameters such as pupil diameter (PD), anterior chamber depth (ACD), lens thickness (LT), and axial lengths (AL). The absolute values of inter-eye differences for SE, PD, ACD, LT, and AL were recorded as AnisoSE, AnisoPD, AnisoACD, AnisoLT, and AnisoAL, respectively.Results: AnisoSE (0.878 vs. 0.577, P = 0.019), AnisoAL (0.395 vs. 0.208, P = 0.001), AnisoACD (0.060 vs. 0.032, P < 0.001), AnisoLT (0.060 vs. 0.031, P = 0.002), and AnisoPD (0.557 vs. 0.340, P = 0.002) were significantly larger in concomitant patients with exotropia. The SE, AL, ACD, LT, and PD showed excellent binocular correlation with ICC values that ranged from 0.943 to 0.987 in control participants and from 0.767 to 0.955 in concomitant exotropia patients. Bland-Altman plots showed the wider range of agreement in patients with concomitant exotropia than the control participants (SE: 5.0288 vs. 3.3258; AL: 2.2146 vs. 1.3172; ACD:0.3243 vs. 0.1682; PD: 2.4691 vs. 1.9241; and LT:0.3723 vs 0.1858).Conclusion: Patients with concomitant exotropia showed larger inter-eye differences in SE, ACD, LT, PD, and AL. Advice should be given to suspicious children to avoid or delay the development of concomitant exotropia.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the performance of a mobile acoustic Uroflowmetry (UFM) application compared with standard UFM in the pediatric population.Methods: A mobile acoustic UFM application represents a noninvasive method to estimate the urine flow rate by recording voiding sounds with a smartphone. Male pediatric patients who were undergoing UFM testing were prospectively recruited, and the voiding sounds were recorded and analyzed. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to compare the maximum flow rate (Qmax), average flow rate (Qavg), voiding time (VT), and voiding volume (VV) as estimated by acoustic UFM with those calculated by standard UFM. Differences in Qmax, Qavg, VT, and VV between the 2 UFM tests were determined using 95% Bland-Altman limits of agreement.Results: A total of 16 male patients were evaluated. Their median age was 9 years. With standard UFM, the median Qmax, Qavg, VT, and VV were 18.7 mL/sec, 11.1 mL/sec, 15.2 seconds, and 157.8 mL, respectively. Strong correlations were observed between the 2 methods for Qmax (ICC=0.755, P=0.005), VT (ICC=0.974, P<0.001), and VV (ICC=0.930, P<0.001), but not for Qavg (ICC=0.442, P=0.135). The Bland-Altman plot showed good agreement between the 2 UFM tests. Flow patterns recorded by acoustic UFM and conventional UFM showed good visual correlations.Conclusions: Acoustic UFM was comparable to standard UFM for male pediatric patients. Further validation of its performance in different toilet settings is necessary for broader use.

Central corneal thickness (CCT) measurements are important for diagnosis, treatment, and surgery planning in ophthalmology. The purpose of this study was to see whether CCT measurements taken with Tono-pachymeter and Scheimpflug- Placido Topography had any significant differences. Tono-pachymeter and topography CCT measurements were taken (n=400). Inter-measurement agreement between them was determined using Bland-Altman Plot analysis. Age groups were also formed as group 1 (aged 18-50 years, 94 males, 106 females) and group 2 (age >51 years, 100 males, 100 females). Mean CCTs measured by Tonopachymeter and topography were 563.77 +±26.43 and 560.88 + 26.341 microns. Bland-Altman Plot analysis showed in total, 13 were above the upper limit and 5 were under the minimum limit of agreement with regression analysis showing no significant relationships (p=0.213). Group 1 had 7 above and 2 below from the limits of agreement. Group two had 9 above and 2 below from the limits of agreement. Both groups showed insignificant differences between devices (p=0.07 and p=0.86). Tono-pachymeter and Scheimpflug-Placido Topography give reliable CCT results within each other. However, since the limit of agreement ranges can still affect one-to-one patient evaluations, we recommend clinics that use these devices to not interchange measurements in practice.

Abstract Background: Bland and Altman plot method is a widely cited graphical approach to assess equivalence of quantitative measurement techniques. Perhaps due to its graphical output, it has been widely applied, however often misinterpreted by lacking of inferential statistical support. To compare data sets obtained from two measurement techniques, researchers may apply Pearson’s correlation, ordinal least-square linear regression, or the Bland-Altman plot methods, failing to locate the weakness of each measurement technique. We aim to develop and distribute a statistical method in R in order to add robust and suitable inferential statistics of equivalence. Methods: Three nested tests based on structural regressions are proposed to assess the equivalence of structural means (accuracy), equivalence of structural variances (precision), and concordance with the structural bisector line (agreement in measurements of data pairs obtained from the same subject) to reach statistical support for the equivalence of measurement techniques. Graphical outputs illustrating these three tests were added to follow Bland and Altman’s principles of easy communication. Results: Statistical p-values and robust approach by bootstrapping with corresponding graphs provide objective, robust measures of equivalence. Five pairs of data sets were analyzed in order to criticize previously published articles that applied the Bland and Altman’s principles, thus showing the suitability of the present statistical approach. In one case it was demonstrated strict equivalence, three cases showed partial equivalence, and one case showed poor equivalence. Package containing open codes and data is available with installation instructions on SourceForge for free distribution. Conclusions: Statistical p-values and robust approach assess the equivalence of accuracy, precision, and agreement for measurement techniques. Decomposition in three tests helps the location of any disagreement as a means to fix a new technique.

Abstract Purpose To evaluate whether an ultrashort-protocol (USP) MRI including only T2-weighted HASTE axial and 3D MRCP SPACE sequences adequately measures the largest diameter of the largest cyst and the main pancreatic duct (MPD) and identifies worrisome features (WF) and high-risk stigmata (HRS) when compared to longer protocols (LP, long protocol; SP, short protocol; S-LP, short or long protocol). We also calculated reductions in costs associated with USP. Methods This retrospective study included 183 IPMN patients. Two radiologists compared two imaging sets (USP versus S-LP) per patient, comparing the mean values of the largest cyst and MPD and agreement regarding the presence or absence of cystic or MPD mural nodules and solid pancreatic tumors. The interobserver agreement for cystic mural nodules and WF/HRS was evaluated, using the Bland-Altman plot and Cohen’s Kappa. Results A total of 112 IPMN patients were evaluated. For detecting cysts or MPD nodules, WF/HRS, and solid pancreatic tumors, USP and S-LP coincided in 94.9%, 99.1%, 92.4%, and 99.1% of cases, respectively. Both USP and S-LP identified all true cystic mural nodules. The mean size of the largest cyst and MPD was 19.48/19.67 mm and 3.24/3.33 mm using USP versus S-LP, while the mean differences for USP versus S-LP were 0.19 mm and 0.08 mm. The USP cost was 39% of LP cost and 77% of SP. Interobserver agreement was moderate to strong. Conclusions For IPMN surveillance, an ultrashort-protocol MRI provides nearly identical information to the more expensive longer protocols. Graphical abstract

Background: Heart rate variability (HRV) and pulse rate variability (PRV) measures are two kinds of physiological indices that can be used to evaluate the autonomic nervous function of healthy subjects and patients with various kinds of illness.Purpose: In this study, we compared the agreement and linear relationship between electrocardiographic signals (ECG)-derived HRV and photoplethysmographic signals (PPG)-derived right hand PRV (R-PRV) and left hand PRV (L-PRV) measures in 14 patients over 1 year after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.Method: The ECG and PPG signals of the patient were recorded simultaneously for 10 min in a supine position. The last 512 stationary RR intervals (RRI) and peak-to peak intervals (PPI) of pulse wave were derived for data analysis. Bland-Altman plot was used to assess the agreement among HRV and both hand PRV measures, while linear regression analysis was used to examine the relationship among corresponding measures of HRV, R-PRV, and L-PRV.Result: The results revealed significant differences in total power (TP), very low-frequency power (VLF), low-frequency power (LF), high-frequency power (HF), and normalized VLF (VLFnorm) among HRV, R-PRV, and L-PRV. Bland-Altman plot analysis showed good agreements in almost all measures between R-PRV and L-PRV, except insufficient agreement was found in LF/HF. Insufficient agreements were found in root mean square successive difference (RMSSD), normalized HF (HFnorm), and LF/HF indices between HRV and L-PRV, and in VLFnorm, HFnorm, and LF/HF indices between HRV and R-PRV. Linear regression analysis showed that the HRV, R-PRV, and L-PRV measures were all highly correlated with one another (r = 0.94 ~ 1; p &lt; 0.001).Conclusion: Though PRV measures of either hand are not surrogates of HRV measures, they might still be used to evaluate the autonomic nervous functions of CABG patients due to the moderate to good agreements in most time-domain and frequency-domain HRV measures and the strong and positive correlations among HRV and both hands PRV measures in CABG patients.
