The 1880s was a period in New Zealand of economic depression. It caused "unemployment, family distress, ragged children and exploited women workers, general business collapse, a crash in the property market, a ten-year banking crisis, bankruptcies and unstable ministries." But despite this Hodgson identifies this period in New Zealand's architectural history as one when: "Architectural style ... started to spread its wings and this period contains some fine examples of building design which was definitely out of the mainstream."

Both released during the 1930s, Fritz Lang’s film Fury (1936) and James Whale’s film Frankenstein (1931) shed light on the threat of mob violence during a decade shaken by economic depression and social turmoil. Considered together in this film analysis, Lang’s Fury and Whale’s Frankenstein reveal the ways lynch violence infiltrated American cultural output during the 1930s. In turn, both directors can be seen as shedding a much-needed light on the social scourges of racism, antisemitism, and homophobia in the 1930s America by including scenes with mobs attempting to kill an innocent who is nevertheless presumed guilty without due process.

Bank deposit is one of the vital issues for any financial institution. It is very challenging to predict a customer if he/she can be a depositor by analyzing related information. Some recent reports demonstrate that economic depression and the continuous decline of the economy negatively impact business organizations and banking sectors. Due to such economic depression, banks cannot attract a customer's attention. Thus, marketing is preferred to be a handy tool for the banking sector to draw customers' attention for a term deposit. The purpose of this paper is to study the performance of ensemble learning algorithms which is a novel approach to predict whether a new customer will have a term deposit or not. A Portuguese retail bank data is used for our study, containing 45,211 phone contacts with 16 input attributes and one decision attribute. The data are preprocessed by using the Discretization technique. 40,690 samples are used for training the classifiers, and 4,521 samples are used for testing. In this work, the performance of the three mostly used classification algorithms named Support Vector Machine (SVM), Neural Network (NN), and Naive Bayes (NB) are analyzed. Then the ability of ensemble methods to improve the efficiency of basic classification algorithms is investigated and experimentally demonstrated. Experimental results exhibit that the performance metrics of Neural Network (Bagging) is higher than other ensemble methods. Its accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity are 96.62%, 97.14%, and 99.08%, respectively. Although all input attributes are considered in the classification method, in the end, a descriptive analysis has shown that some input attributes have more importance for this classification. Overall, it is shown that ensemble methods outperformed the traditional algorithms in this domain. We believe our contribution can be used as a depositor prediction system to provide additional support for bank deposit prediction.

Vorarlberg in the Crisis Years 1816 and 1817: Reasons and EffectsBetween 1812 and 1817, the so-called "Little Ice Age" in Central Europe reached its climax. During this period, the summers were two to three degrees colder than the 20th century average. In addition to the economic depression caused by the Napoleonic Wars, the eruption of the volcano Tambora in April 1815 further exacerbated the situation. The consequences of the climatic changes affected the whole world and resulted in the "Year Without a Summer" in 1816. The effects of the climatic fluctuation also had an impact on the following year with famines and natural disasters still being a huge problem. Also in Vorarlberg, this resulted in terrible disasters: Flooding, avalanches and crop failures led to years of crisis in Vorarlberg.

Abstract The focus of this article is on the actions of Reverend Frits Slomp, vicar of the Reformed Church in Heemse, during the economic depression of the 1930s, and his response to the rise of national socialism as a new political movement. During the depression many labourers in Heemse and Hardenberg lost their jobs. Reverend Slomp put a great deal of personal effort into helping these men and into trying to solve their social-economic problems. When in 1933 the National Socialist German Workers’ Party (NSDAP) came into power in Germany and the National Socialist Party (NSB) was gaining ground in the Netherlands, Reverend Slomp warned about the dangers of National Socialism.

This research work studied the effect of economic depression on the growth of small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs) in Awka South Local Government Area, Anambra State and their contribution to economic growth. This research focuses on the extent to which economic hardship affects the operations and activities of SMEs in Awka South. The study was conducted in Awka South Local Government Area, Anambra State. Data for the study were collected from a representative sample of one hundred (100) SMEs entrepreneurs in the area. A systematic sampling technique would be used to select the respondents. The result of the analyses showed that economic depression impairs the growth of SMEs in Awka South Local Government Area, Anambra State. There should be adequate provision of infrastructures, government should give special consideration to SMEs by patronizing SMEs output, government should attract international financial institutions towards the growth and development of small scale industries in Awka South and Nigeria at large etc. JEL: L20; L23; L53 <p> </p><p><strong> Article visualizations:</strong></p><p><img src="/-counters-/edu_01/0796/a.php" alt="Hit counter" /></p>

The success or failure of any budgetary system depends to a large extent on the management assumptions of human nature (views), employees’ behavior and level of commitment towards productivity. The budgetary system may be non-humanistic (autocratic) or humanistic (participatory). Autocratic budgetary system is synonymous with employees’ negative reactions including counter productive work behaviours while participatory budgetary system is identified with employees’ positive reactions embedded in productive work behaviours. While admitting the proposition that certain settings may require the operation of autocratic budgetary system, this paper holds that available accounting literature on management theories and empirical researches support the assertion: Participatory budgetary system is a panacea; that is, a cure for all the many ills which have been associated with autocratic budgetary system. The unconcerned attitude of enterprise management towards modern theories and researches in budgetary systems and practices, the level of counterproductive work behaviours and some illicit acts in businesses and the environment, the corruption trend in a tropical Nation like Nigeria, productivity downturn and economic depression have posed serious concern. Participatory budgetary system relative to modern management views and motivated work behaviours will boost productivity upturn in Nigerian firms.

In the 1920s, Paris became a central site in a Europe-wide process of touring and musical mixing that fostered Black cosmopolitanism. Performers experienced travel and touring as a social and political triumph over racial discrimination. This chapter also shows how economic depression at the end of this period heightened racial antagonism in Paris. The government responded with racial quotas on employment, and unions and laborers expressed hostility to immigrant workers (particularly those of color, whether French citizens or not). The quotas were particularly contentious regarding bands that played in popular venues, because many were marketed precisely on the basis of being foreign and thus best suited for tango, jazz, or biguine. Facing increased hardship, Black communities expressed solidarity against racial prejudice and economic discrimination. This, along with musical mixing during gigs and images and gossip in the Blackpress, contributed to the emergence of an everyday Black cosmopolitanism in interwar Paris.
