CERN-MEDICIS is an off-line isotope separator facility for the extraction of radioisotopes from irradiated targets of interest to medical applications. The beamline, between the ion source and the collection chamber, consists of ion extraction and focusing elements, and a dipole magnet mass spectrometer recovered from the LISOL facility in Louvain-la-Neuve. The latter has been modified for compatibility with MEDICIS, including the installation of a window for injecting laser light into the ion source for resonance photo-ionization. Ion beam optics and magnetic field modeling using SIMION and OPERA respectively were performed for the design and characterization of the beamline. The individual components and their optimal configuration in terms of ion beam extraction, mass separation, and ion transport efficiency is described, along with details of the commissioning and initial performance assessment with stable ion beams.

Abstract We investigate spatial distributions of iron Kα (Fe-Kα) lines in the cental 100 pc of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068 observed with Chandra. The spatial distributions of Fe-Kα lines, neutral and highly ionized, around the center of the galactic nucleus are not isotropic, as consistently confirmed in both image and spectral analyses. The hydrogen number density of the gas clouds responsible for the neutral Fe-Kα line emission is estimated to be 102–103 cm−3 for the sampled regions near the galactic core. The photo-ionization model, where iron is assumed to be ionized by X-rays from the galactic nucleus, yields ionization parameters lower than 19 for these clouds. The range of this ionization parameter is two or three orders of magnitude lower than the theoretically expected value to produce the observed helium-like Fe-Kα line intensities. Therefore, the photo-ionization model is excluded from the explanation of the amount of highly ionized iron that is responsible for the observed Fe-Kα lines. Also, we find anti-correlation in the spatial distributions between the molecular cloud in the area observed with ALMA and that of the Fe-Kα lines, including that from neutral iron. We suggest that X-ray iron-line and radio molecular cloud observations are complementary to probe the distribution of matters in the central regions around the cores of active galactic nuclei.

Benzene, toluene and xylene (BTX) are an important part of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to be detected and monitored in the air, due to their toxicity towards human health. One of the most reliable technique used in BTX detection is gas chromatography (GC), which presents a high sensitivity. On the other hand, it has important drawbacks, such as high costs, the need for qualified personnel and frequent maintenance. To overcome these drawbacks, this work reports the development of a low cost and portable BTX gas detection system based on a mini chromatographic cartridge, a photo ionization detector (PID), a simple control unit (based on Arduino architecture) and a mini pump. In order to separate the BTX components, we propose the use of a cartridge 80 mm in length, composed of several commercial chromatographic column sections. To test the system performances, we have injected different amounts (from about 0.3 to 5.3 µg) of benzene, toluene and xylene and two of the most frequent possible interferents (ethanol, acetone). Experimental results have shown different retention time values (i.e., 25 ± 0.5 s, 51 ± 1.2 s and 117 ± 4 s, respectively) for benzene, toluene and xylene.

The particle detector degradation mainly appears through decrease of carrier recombination lifetime and manifestation of carrier trapping effects related to introduction of carrier capture and emission centers. In this work, the carrier trap spectroscopy in Si1−xGex structures, containing either 1 or 5% of Ge, has been performed by combining the microwave probed photoconductivity, pulsed barrier capacitance transients and spectra of steady-state photo-ionization. These characteristics were examined in pristine, 5.5 MeV electron and 1.6 MeV proton irradiated Si and SiGe diodes with n+p structure.

Atmospheric escape rate is a key parameter to measure in order to understand the evolution of exoplanets. In this presentation, we will show that the Balmer series, observed with high-resolution transmission spectroscopy, is a precise probe to measure exoplanet evaporation, especially for ultra hot Jupiters orbiting early-type star. These hot gaseous giant exoplanets (such as KELT-9 b) are presumed to have an atmosphere dominated by neutral and ionized atomic species. In particular, hydrogen Balmer lines have been detected in some of their upper atmospheres, suggesting that hydrogen is filling the planetary Roche lobe and escaping from these planets. Here, we will present new significant absorptions of the Balmer series in the KELT-9b atmosphere obtained with HARPS-N. The precise line shapes of the Hα, Hβ, and Hγ absorptions allow us to put constraints on the thermospheric temperature. Moreover, the mass loss rate, and the excited hydrogen population of KELT-9 b are also constrained, thanks to a retrieval analysis performed with a new atmospheric model (the PAWN model). We retrieved a thermospheric temperature of T = 13 200+800-720 K and a mass loss rate of log10(MLR) = 10^(12.8+-0.3) g/s when the atmosphere was assumed to be in hydrodynamical expansion and in local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE). Since the thermospheres of hot Jupiters are not expected to be in LTE, we explored atmospheric structures with non-Boltzmann equilibrium for the population of the excited hydrogen. We do not find strong statistical evidence in favor of a departure from LTE. However, our non-LTE scenario suggests that a departure from the Boltzmann equilibrium may not be sufficient to explain the retrieved low number densities of the excited hydrogen. In non-LTE, Saha equilibrium departure via photo-ionization, is also likely to be necessary to explain the data.

Wide bandgap semiconductor technology has been generating a great deal of attention due to its fundamental advantages in high power electronics. Understanding and effective control of interfacial properties belong to a group of critical issues requiring progress. In this work, we report progress in wide bandgap interface characterization, achieved using photo-ionization of deep traps under a non-equilibrium condition created by corona-charge bias in deep depletion. This characterization capability is demonstrated on oxidized n-type epitaxial SiC with deep interfacial traps invisible in standard C-V. These traps, initially present at high density, are shown to be reduced by half after a wet anneal. The photo-ionization technique is incorporated in commercially available non-contact C-V (CnCV) metrology [1,2] providing a non-invasive, cost and time saving metrology that benefits development research as well as device fabrication.

KELT-9 b, the hottest known exoplanet, with Teq ~ 4400 K, is the archetype of a new planet class known as ultra-hot Jupiters. These exoplanets are presumed to have an atmosphere dominated by neutral and ionized atomic species. In particular, Hα and Hβ Balmer lines have been detected in the KELT-9 b upper atmosphere, suggesting that hydrogen is filling the planetary Roche lobe and escaping from the planet. In this work, we detected δ Scuti-type stellar pulsation (with a period Ppuls = 7.54 ± 0.12 h) and studied the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect (finding a spin-orbit angle λ = −85.01° ± 0.23°) prior to focussing on the Balmer lines (Hα to Hζ) in the optical transmission spectrum of KELT-9 b. Our HARPS-N data show significant absorption for Hα to Hδ. The precise line shapes of the Hα, Hβ, and Hγ absorptions allow us to put constraints on the thermospheric temperature. Moreover, the mass loss rate, and the excited hydrogen population of KELT-9 b are also constrained, thanks to a retrieval analysis performed with a new atmospheric model. We retrieved a thermospheric temperature of T = 13 200−720+800 K and a mass loss rate of Ṁ = 1012.8±0.3 g s−1 when the atmosphere was assumed to be in hydrodynamical expansion and in local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE).
