Alpacas’ population in Poland has attained 5000 individuals. From 2020 alpacas are recognized as farm animals in Poland. This ruminant is increasingly popular, but still poorly known compared to other farm animals (cattle, sheep, goats). The aim of this review is to present the specificity of alpacas in terms of adequate welfare of these animals. To provide an appropriate welfare level, the knowledge about the species’ biology and typical behaviour is needed. The basis for assessment of the animal's health status is the knowledge of basic physiological indicators, whose divergence from reference values is often the first symptom of many diseases. The health and welfare of virtually all animal species are influenced by infestations by endo- and exoparasites, which can cause many disorders and serious diseases. The growing alpaca population size necessitates investigation of this species, which will help future and current owners to breed these animals and prompt veterinarians to apply appropriate treatment of alpacas bred in Poland.

Sweden is often seen as a leading country in animal welfare and legislation, but some recent amendments to the legislation are perceived as relaxing animal welfare requirements in order to improve the competitiveness of the relevant industry and of farmers. In this study, we analysed the suggested and actual changes in the Swedish national animal welfare regulations relating to horses, cattle and pigs between 1988 and 2019 and the consequences for the intended animal welfare level. The regulations and amendments, including the proposals, the written motivations, the stakeholders’ written responses to the proposed amendments and the final amendments, were scrutinised in detail. A sample of 77 requirements was then selected to assess whether and how the animal welfare level was affected by these legislative changes. The results indicated that the animal welfare protection level for cattle, pigs and horses increased overall during the 30-year period, but that a number of specific requirements had been relaxed to meet objectives other than animal welfare. It was more difficult to determine whether animal welfare improved in practice during the same period, due to the lack of systematic evaluations of the consequences of amending the regulations. Future evaluations are needed to evaluate the outcome of new legislative requirements and to monitor whether they serve their purpose in practice.

The aim of this study was to evaluate if and how the perception of animal welfare by Italian consumers and their purchasing behavior of animal-friendly foods have evolved in recent years. The research was carried out through a survey on a representative sample of Italian consumers (n=969). Responses showed that 69% of consumers declared to pay attention to animal welfare at time of purchasing, and they mostly acquired information about animal welfare through the mass media. In accordance with previous surveys, the categories perceived as having the highest welfare level were fish and dairy cows, whereas the lowest welfare level was attributed to broilers and pigs. Compared to previous surveys, Italian consumers seem to have improved their knowledge about the legislation on animal protection and increased their interest toward animal welfare issues. However, they still find it difficult to identify animalfriendly labels, together with a lack of knowledge about non-conventional (e.g. extensive and organic) farming systems.

It is essential to involve communities in the surrounding areas or buffer zones towards effective and efficient forest area management in the management of forest conservation areas. As one of the supporting villages in the Nantu-Boliyohuto Wildlife Sanctuary area, Sari Tani Village is located in the Wonosari sub-district, Boalemo Regency, which needs to be a part of a collaboration or partner in sustainable forest management. Therefore, the community's welfare in the buffer village should be a common concern as a manifestation of the vision of sustainable forest management. Accordingly, this research seeks to measure the welfare level of the community in the village. The data were generated from interviews and observations on 85 families as research samples. Those were further analyzed using descriptive, qualitative, and quantitative methods, referring to eight welfare indicator criteria based on the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS 2016) with weighting or scoring. The results indicated that the score of the welfare indicator assessment was 13. It means that the welfare level of the Sari Tani village community was in the low category number interval. Thus, it is suggested to develop the village area as the smallest government administration area and as a buffer village for the Nantu-Boliyohuto wildlife sanctuary area using an approach to indicators that affect the level of welfare, viz. education, employment, levels and patterns of consumption, and poverty.
