Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the knowledge, attitudes, and educational needs for gerontological nursing in cancer hospital nurses.Methods: Participants included 208 nurses who had been working in the general wards for more than 6 months. Data collection was conducted through self-reported questionnaires. The Knowledge Scale and Educational Needs for Gerontological Nursing Scale were used for data collection. Also, a Korean version of the Attitudes Toward Older Adults Scale developed by Lim was used. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and Duncan test for multiple comparisons.Results: The average score of the nurses’ knowledge on nursing care for older adults was 21.09 out of 30 points, and their attitudes toward older adults scored 4.29 out of 7 points, which was within a neutral range. The average score of the needs for gerontological nursing education was 4.10 out of 5. In the knowledge level assessment, the drug intervention area showed the lowest score. In terms of the educational needs, geriatric clinical symptoms such as a sore and delirium, and the drug intervention, including dose and toxicity, showed the highest score.Conclusion: Based on the above results, providing education is necessary for cancer hospital nurses so their knowledge on and positive attitudes toward older adults can improve.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a clinicopathological syndrome of abnormal lipid deposition in the liver mediated by nonalcohol intake. The Gexia Zhuyu decoction, a classic traditional Chinese medicine compound, is widely used in the clinical treatment of NAFLD. However, its specific efficacy and underlying mechanisms have not been elucidated yet. This study aimed to quantitatively evaluate the efficacy of the Gexia Zhuyu decoction using pharmacodynamics and to explore its molecular mechanisms in conjunction with proteomics. High-fat diets and methionine choline-deficient diets were used to induce various NAFLD progression stages in mouse models. The effects of oral Gexia Zhuyu decoction administration on NAFLD were evaluated by measuring the serum and liver indicators of the treated mice before and after drug intervention and by comparing the changes in liver tissue. Liver TRPM4 mRNA and protein levels were measured using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting, respectively. Experimental data showed that serum ALT, AST, and liver triglyceride (TG) levels in each disease stage group of drug intervention mice decreased, and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels increased. Liver TG levels decreased after drug intervention in the liver fibrosis mice, but serum TG levels increased. Furthermore, cellular fatty changes, inflammatory changes, and fibrous tissue proliferation were all relieved. The TRPM4 protein and mRNA levels in the liver tissue were decreased, and the microRNA (miRNA)-24 expression was increased. The Gexia Zhuyu decoction has a clear therapeutic effect at each stage of NAFLD. It likely acts by altering miRNA-24 expression and regulating the target TRPM4 protein pathway to achieve NAFLD treatment.

AbstractThe Drug Response Gene Expression Associated Map, also referred as “DREAM” (http://bio-big-data.cn:8080/DREAM), is a manually curated database of experimentally supported protein-coding RNAs and drugs associations in human cancers. The current version of the DREAM documents 3048 entries about scientific literatures supported drug sensitivity or drug intervention related protein-coding RNAs from PubMed database and 195 high-throughput microarray data about drug sensitivity or drug intervention related protein-coding RNAs data from GEO database. Each entry in DREAM database contains detailed information on protein-coding RNA, drug, cancer, and other information including title, PubMed ID, journal, publish time. The DREAM database also provides some data visualization and online analysis services such as volcano plot, GO/KEGG enrichment function analysis, and novel drug discovery analysis. We hope the DREAM database should serve as a valuable resource for clinical practice and basic research, which could help researchers better understand the effects of protein-coding RNAs on drug response in human cancers.

Modified Huangqi Chifeng decoction (MHCD) has been used to reduce proteinuria in immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) for many years. Previously, we have demonstrated its protective role in glomerular mesangial cells. Podocyte injury, another key factor associated with proteinuria in IgAN, has also attracted increasing attention. However, whether MHCD can reduce proteinuria by protecting podocytes remains unclear. The present study aimed to investigate the protective effects of MHCD against podocyte injury in a rat model of IgAN. To establish the IgAN model, rats were administered bovine serum albumin, carbon tetrachloride, and lipopolysaccharide. MHCD in three doses or telmisartan was administered once daily for 8 weeks (n = 10 rats/group). Rats with IgAN developed proteinuria at week 6, which worsened over time until drug intervention. After drug intervention, MHCD reduced proteinuria and had no effect on liver and kidney function. Furthermore, MHCD alleviated renal pathological lesions, hyperplasia of mesangial cells, mesangial matrix expansion, and podocyte foot process fusion. Western blot analysis revealed that MHCD increased the expression of the podocyte-associated proteins nephrin and podocalyxin. Additionally, we stained podocyte nuclei with an antibody for Wilms’ tumor protein one and found that MHCD increased the podocyte number in rats with IgAN. In conclusion, these results demonstrate that MHCD attenuates proteinuria by reducing podocyte injury.

Persons with spinal cord injury (SCI) have neurogenic bowel disorders characterized by difficulty with evacuation (DWE), fecal incontinence, and discoordination of defecation. Six medically stable in-patients with SCI with a mean age of 57 ± 10 years (range: 39–66 years) and time since injury of 18 ± 17 years (range: 3–47 years) were investigated. Standard of care (SOC) for bowel care was followed by two weeks of SOC plus neostigmine (0.07 mg/kg) and glycopyrrolate (0.014 mg/kg) administered transcutaneously by iontophoresis thrice weekly for two weeks while patients continued to receive SOC. The primary endpoint was time to bowel evacuation. Body weights and abdominal radiographs were obtained. Ten questions related to bowel function and the Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire for Medication were acquired after each arm. Bowel evacuation time decreased after the dual drug intervention arm (106.9 ± 68.4 vs. 40.8 ± 19.6 min; p < 0.0001). Body weight decreased (2.78 ± 0.98 kg; p < 0.0001), a finding confirmed on abdominal radiograph. Both questionnaires demonstrated improvement after the dual drug intervention arm. No major adverse events occurred. The addition of neostigmine and glycopyrrolate by transcutaneous administration to SOC for bowel care in persons with SCI and DWE resulted in the safe, effective, and predictable bowel evacuation with subjective improvement in bowel care.

Abstract Background Wrist-ankle acupuncture (WAA) as a kind of micro acupuncture therapy has been used to management cancer pain, however, the effects of WAA on cancer pain were controversial in the current studies. Therefore, the purpose of this meta-analysis was to critically evaluate the effect of wrist-ankle acupuncture (WAA) on cancer pain. Methods Seven digital databases were searched from the inception of databases to July 2020, including CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, CBM, Cochrane Library, PubMed and Embase. Randomized controlled trials conforming to the inclusion and exclusion criteria were screened and extracted; the risk of bias was evaluated using the Cochrane Collaboration criteria. The primary outcome indicators included pain relief rate and pain score, and the secondary outcome was adverse reaction incidence. All analyses were performed with Review Manager 5.3. Results A total of 13 studies with 1005 cancer patients (intervention group: 568, control group: 437) were included in this meta-analysis. The results demonstrated that the pain relief rate of experimental group (WAA / WAA + drug intervention) was better than that of control group (analgesic drug intervention), and the difference was statistically significant [RR = 1.31, 95%CI: 1.15 ~ 1.49, P < 0.01]. Conclusions WAA has certain effect on cancer pain, and the effect of WAA combined with pharmacological intervention is better than that of drug therapy alone.
