This article interrogates the limits and possibilities of interference as methodology and metaphor in video-based research aiming to disrupt ableist understandings of disability that create barriers to health care. We explore the overlapping terrain of diffractive and interference methodologies, teasing apart the metaphorical-material uses and implications of interference for video-makers in our project. Using the digital/multimedia stories created and an interview as research artifacts, we illuminate how interference manifested in disabled makers’ lives, how interference operated through the research apparatus, and how the videos continue to hold agency through their durability in the virtual realm. Drawing on feminist post-philosophies of matter (Barad) and use (Ahmed), we argue that the videos disrupt the gaze that fetishizes disabled bodies, thereby interfering with cultural-clinical processes that abnormalize disability. The research apparatus interfered with makers’ subjectivities yet also brought people together to generate something new—a community that creates culture and contests its positioning as marginal.

Statement of the problem. The article discusses the peculiarities of YouTube video clickbait headlines. Some video makers are profit-conscious and deliberately headline their videos using eye-catching words that often have nothing to do with the real content in order to maximize the number of clicking the links. Such headlines aim at deceiving the recipients as for the content of the text or video, affecting their perception, attracting their attention and making them watch the video after all. Such headlines are known as clickbait, for they trap the reader or viewer with deliberately sensational or incomplete information. In this case promotional impact purposefully overrides the nominative function resulting in the peculiarity of the clickbait. The form of speech acts, including stylistic, lexical, syntactical, spelling and punctuation features, makes them stand out of other texts corpus. Particular attention is paid to discerning them as directive illocutionary acts and to proving that they meet all Searle’s requirements for such phenomena including illocutionary point, condition of sincerity, direction of fit. The purpose of the article is to analyze YouTube video clickbait headlines as directive illocutionary acts. Research methodology. The main method of research is qualitative content-analysis that involves revealing a specific meaning expressed with a clickbait headline as a significant element of a media text, as well as a communicative-pragmatic analysis aimed at identifying directive illocutionary force. Research results. Communicative success of clickbait headlines correlates with the “curiosity gap” manifesting itself in recipient’s information lacuna. The recipient should be able to bridge the former to avoid excessive cognitive attempts, clickbait headlines being a tool for that. Conclusions. Clickbait headlines analysis results in identifying them as directive illocutionary acts, for they foreground the perlocutionary function deliberately neglecting nominative one, thus manipulating an information recipient.

Through the use of the documentary genre, a group of Mexican indigenous women video-makers and their collaborators are depicting contemporary indigenous women. Occupying transformative roles in their communities, indigenous women are pioneers opening new cultural and social spaces to work toward a more equitable society. The main scenarios of their struggle are indigenous marginalization and women’s marginalization under patriarchy. The documentaries Voladora/Flying Woman (Chloé Campero, 2008), La vida de la mujer en resistencia/We Are Equal (Chiapas Media Project–Promedios, 2004), and La rebelión de las oaxaqueñas/The Oaxaqueña Rebellion (Mal de Ojo TV, 2008) are case studies of female indigenous resistance through the media.

A lot of viral videos on Youtube came from the United States. But, making viral videos on Youtube is a tough challenge, both for seasoned YouTubers and especially for new YouTubers. This research focuses on discovering the properties of these viral videos by clustering them into distinct clusters. K-Means algorithm is used for the clustering process. The purpose of this clustering process is to look for patterns in the data that were previously unseen. The result shows that the videos are divided into three clusters which are built from 3 variables; views, likes and dislikes. The patterns and insights found in this study can be useful for aspiring video makers who want to achieve success as a Youtuber.

In his chapter, Christopher Cayari draws on the basic premise of the film Inception to coin the term fanception. In fanception, nested forms of fandoms may plant new ideas into the processes of music learning in unexpected ways and places—such as musical fan videos on YouTube. This response to Cayari explores what fanception as an analytical construct might mean for the role of educators and the future of music learning. This term helps contextualize the role of mixed platforms such as YouTube for connecting musicians and video makers of varied levels of ability to broaden their skills and expand their creative horizons. This chapter response discusses how fanception might extend opportunities for informal learning through video.

Abstract Available scholarship on trans* pornography has favored mainstream studio and alternative/queer productions. Relatively little work has examined the phenomenon of trans* micropornography: user-made remixes of copywritten source material that are shared online within networks of pornographic fandoms. Trans* identities hold a significant purchase on microporn networks, evidenced by the ubiquity of trans* bodies and the work of trans* microporn video makers, who while hidden behind screen names and avatars, largely identify as trans* women and cis male “sissies.” Drawing on textual analysis of these videos and their methods of addressing the viewer, the author identifies a practice within microporn networks that she calls trans* porno remix (TPR). Through digital editing techniques, TPR creates haptic spaces for the viewer to imagine themselves as trans* subjects. Through modes of direct address to the viewer, on-screen captions, and audio-visual montage, TPR videos construct a trans* imaginary that is coproduced with the porn consumer and create space for viewers to experiment with gendered embodiment through imagining a future-oriented transformation into a trans* subject.
