Abstract Background Value of a Statistical Life Year (VSLY) provides an important economic measure of an individual’s trade-off between health risks and other consumption, and is a widely used policy parameter. Measuring VSLY is complex though, especially in low-income and low-literacy communities. Methods Using a large randomized experiment (N = 3027), we study methodological aspects of stated-preference elicitation with payment cards (price lists) in an extreme poverty context. In a 2 × 2 design, we systematically vary whether buying or selling prices are measured, crossed with the range of the payment card. Results We find substantial effects of both the pricing method and the list range on elicited VSLY. Estimates of the gross domestic product per capita multiplier for VSLY range from 3.5 to 33.5 depending on the study design. Importantly, all estimates are economically and statistically significantly larger than the current World Health Organization threshold of 3.0 for cost-effectiveness analyses. Conclusions Our results inform design choice in VSLY measurements, and provide insight into the potential variability of these measurements and possibly robustness checks.

Central Connecticut State University stated in 2016, Indonesia was ranked 60th out of 61 countries regarding literacy. According to UNESCO literacy is the ability to identify, understand, interpret, communicate, in various contexts. The National Alibaca Index said that most provinces in Indonesia have a low literacy index, including West Kalimantan, which is ranked 3rd out of 34 provinces. However, in Pontianak City, in the last 5 years, various literacy-based activities such as exhibitions, book fairs, discussions have been intensively held, as well as recorded more than 20 literacy communities in 2019. All literacy activities are organized independently and have no special space. Therefore, considering literacy needs and problems, the potential location for the design area is Jl. General Ahmad Yani, Pontianak City. However, there are problems where there is no standardization that can be used as a reference for designing a Literacy Center. Therefore, the design method used is the Design Thinking method, which, according to Kambel (2009), is a creative approach by gathering information and opportunities available to be synthesized into innovation and work ideas. Through this method, facilities such as exhibition rooms, classrooms, reading and collection, as well as spatial arrangements and forms are found to accommodate literacy activities in Pontianak.

AbstractInnovative methods to collect dietary data at multiple times across the year are needed to better understand seasonal or temporal changes in household diets and measure the impact of nutrition-sensitive agricultural programmes in low-income countries. The present study aims to validate a picture-based research tool for participants to self-record their household’s dietary diversity each month in villages of Manyoni District, Tanzania. Pictorial record charts were developed to reflect local food resources. In 113 randomly selected households, the person responsible for food preparation was trained to mark all items consumed by any household member within the home, or prepared for consumption outside the home, for a single recording day. The next day, an interview-based household 24-h food recall (H24HR) was collected for the same period. Separate analyses tested agreement (a) between picture charts and H24HR and (b) between H24HR following chart completion and on an alternative day. Concordance between methods differed between food groups and items but was high to very high for all cereals, vegetables, pulses, legumes and nuts and almost all fruits. Recording of ten items (including non-cultivated fruits and ingredients of mixed dishes) differed significantly between H24HR assessments, all of which were reported by more households in interviews following chart completion. Results suggest potential for visual prompts and the contemporaneous nature of data collection to improve the accuracy of interview-based recall. With adequate investment in developing and implementing context-adapted tools, pictorial charts may also offer an effective standalone method for use at multiple time-points in agricultural programmes.
