This article, which tells the life story of Anna E. Hall, highlights the significant role that this African American missionary played in Liberia for the US Methodist Episcopal Church in the early twentieth century. The latter half of the nineteenth century saw increased migration of free African Americans as ministers . . . and missionaries overseas, especially to Africa. Standing as a paragon in missionary ventures, Anna E. Hall represents one of many who were responsible for the resurgence of Christianity in Africa and provides an exemplar for missionary service.

This year, we celebrate the 130th anniversary of the birth of Latvian missionary Anna Irbe (1890–1973). She was an extraordinary woman and one of the first missionaries that went from Latvia into the mission field in Southern India. This paper examines her approach to missionary work, which was very innovative at the time and quite successful. It also discusses Irbe’s motives and philosophy of missionary service. Irbe very strongly stood against the theology of mission of the time, which held that Western missionaries were the ones bringing the culture to the poor heathens. She very acutely recognized that many of the Westerners, including some missionaries, held a supremacy attitude. She was willing to learn – she acquired the Tamil language, sought to understand the culture, differences in the caste system, and the attitudes of fellow missionaries. From her observations, she made a decision to do everything with an Indian style so that her work would not be considered foreign by local beneficiaries of the mission, which allowed her to be very successful in her ministry. Soon after the start of her ministry, Irbe developed a “Latvian village in India” called Karunagarapuri, which is located in the Coimbatore area, Tamil Nadu state. The name of the village means “The village of the most merciful God.” Irbe also recognized that the Gospel was always connected with culture, and therefore she was very open to discover and learn new things about Indian culture by visiting various temples and museums and meeting people of different castes. She was very open to ecumenism and was ready to use any opportunity to see where signs of God’s mercy could be noticed. During her ministry, she tried to fully identify with the local people, which was not the most common attitude among missionaries of that time. Overall, Irbe’s mission service and sacrifice brought plentiful fruit and it could be said that in her attitude and love towards the people of India, she was an extraordinary woman ahead of her time

Adam Kozłowiecki (1911–2007) was a Polish Jesuit, who spent sixty-one years in missionary service in Zambia. He arrived there in 1946, just a few months after having been liberated from the concentration camp of Dachau, where he spent the biggest part of his time during wwii (earlier he was one of the first prisoners of the camp in Auschwitz). The vicissitudes made of him a witness of tragedy of the years 1939–45 and a protagonist of the missionary endeavor in Africa—the continent that was then looking for and finding its independence from colonialism. At the same time, Kozłowiecki was both witness and protagonist of the changes in the Catholic Church brought by the Second Vatican Council—the event in which he took an active part as the first archbishop metropolitan of Lusaka. The article, based on the existing literature and archival material from Rome, recalls the life of this extraordinary figure, pointing out the surprises and unexpected changes he had to face several times.

Gospel preaching is the duty of every believer to be carried out not a mandate for certain people, such as pastors, pastors or evangelists. But this preaching of the gospel is a direct mandate from God for believers. But some of the believers do not have a correct understanding of this noble task and thus ignore it. Based on the above problem, Matthew 28: 16-20 is discussed so that every believer is able to understand and apply the Great Commission of the Lord Jesus Christ. The biblical text is one part that teaches about missionary service for this world, which is to make all nations disciples of Jesus Christ. This study uses a qualitative study of biblical literature with a literal-grammatical-historical-contextual interpretation approach and considers highly correlated Bible texts, and describes them so as to be able to provide an understanding of Jesus' commands to make disciples. Every believer needs to grow in faith and his knowledge of God. Thus believers will be enabled to do His commandments. The Great Commission of the Lord Jesus Christ is not a choice but a necessity to do. The message that must be conveyed is that Jesus Christ died, was buried, and on the third day He rose and ascended into heaven.

The paper deals with one of the outstanding hierarchs of the late 19th - early 20th century - Nikolay (Ziorov) and his missionary activity in Alaska. It is noteworthy that the peculiarity of his Ministry was that a diverse national staff distinguished all three departments that he led (Aleutian, Taurida, Warsaw and Privislenskaya), so he had to defend the rights of the Orthodox population and to try to harmonize interethnic relations at the level of his ideas. The path of Nikolay (Ziorov)’s Episcopal Ministry began with the appointment in 1891 to the Aleutian diocese, which was responsible for all Orthodox parishes in North America, including Alaska. When Nikolay (Ziorov) arrived in the United States, the local Church Department was located in San Francisco, which made it impossible for the Bishop to have a regular presence in Alaska. Moreover, even the possibility of moving the Department to Alaska was not considered acceptable, since the conversion of the Uniate population living in other States was seen as more promising perspective for the Hierarch at that time. It is established that the Bishop traveled a lot in Alaska, advocated for the rights of the Orthodox population, had a diary and appealed to central and regional authorities. At the initiative of the Minister, the sacred texts were translated into the languages of the indigenous peoples of the region. The views that Nikolay (Ziorov) developed while serving in North America were continued in his later work in other dioceses. Largely, this affected inter-ethnic and inter-religious relations. In both Taurida and Warsaw dioceses, he positioned himself as a defender of the Orthodox faith among the gentile environment. It is shown that Nikolay (Ziorov) used the methods of missionary work, developed in Alaska, later in Taurida and the Kingdom of Poland.
