Background. Protein-calorie deficiency is common multifactorial medical condition in infants. Nutrition therapy of protein-calorie deficiency in premature infants with special medical food is not always quite effective. It can be associated with residual manifestations of overlapping perinatal pathology.Clinical case description. Extremely premature child with severe protein-calorie deficiency in the late period with combined perinatal pathology (perinatal central nervous system damage and bronchopulmonary dysplasia) was administrated with therapeutic highly nutritious (high-protein/high-energy) milk formula according to individual plan. The positive dynamics in clinical manifestations of the main and associated diseases was noted on nutrition therapy.Conclusion. High-calorie and protein-enriched therapeutic formula can effectively correct protein-calorie deficiency in premature infants with associated perinatal pathology in the recovery period (disfunction compensation).

Thisis the second part of a paper on a study conducted in Alexandria on 68 premature children. Controls were full-term children, double the number of prematures, and matched by age and sex. The first part presented differences in growth and development in relation to prematurity. This part deals with risk factors for prematurity. The study revealed that low educational level of fathers and parental smoking were significant risk factors for prematurity. The mean age of both parents and mothers’ gravidity were significantly higher for prematures. Other risk factors were identified. Mothers with diabetes and chronic nephritis were more likely to have a premature child

ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze maternal care for siblings of preterm babies hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit. Method: Qualitative research using symbolic interactionism as a theoretical reference and narrative research as a methodological reference. Ten mothers were surveyed through semi-structured interviews. Results: Three thematic units emerged from the analysis of data: “social support in the sharing of child care”; “promotion of adaptation to the arrival of a sibling” and “maternal feelings and coping”. Final considerations: Care for the premature child’s sibling is developed under mothers’ physical distance from him/her, justified by the need to remain close to the premature child due to risks and fragility related to the condition.

The premature birth rate in the United States has been persistently high among Black women for many decades. While most research on the topic of premature birth involves poor and low-income women, this book focuses on the experiences of more affluent women to show that race is as much a common denominator as class in adverse birth outcomes. Using the afterlife of slavery framework, the book argues that racism shapes professional and college-educated Black women’s prenatal and birthing medical encounters, which have precedents that emanate from slavery. The book weaves in historic examples of medical racism, offering analytical context for understanding contemporary Black women’s interpretations of medical encounters of prenatal care, labor, birthing, and the admission of their premature child to the neonatal intensive care unit. Based on ethnographic observations, archival research, and nearly fifty interviews with parents, medical professionals, public health administrators, and birth workers, including midwives, doulas and reproductive justice advocates, the book is divided into two parts. Part I offers definitions of prematurity, outlines some of its causes, and describes what it is like to have a premature child. This part also explores the everyday forms of racism, such as diagnostic lapses or being dismissed by medical personnel, and links those experiences to past ideologies and practices of medical racism. Part II uses a critical racial lens to explore three strategies to address prematurity: technological intervention, public health intervention, and the preventionist approach taken up by birth workers. The conclusion gestures toward ideas to address medical racism.

ABSTRACT Objective: To reflect about the father’s experience close to the premature son using the kangaroo method under the referential of Merleau-Ponty. Method: Theoretical-reflexive study based on the phenomenology of perception and behavior proposed by Merleau-Ponty and relevant literature. Results: To live the prematurity with the son using the kangaroo method, provides for the father to recognize himself as a being in the world. His intentions regarding the care are demonstrated through the skin to skin contact and the associated care for the newborn child. From the lived experiences, the father can exert the fullness of his paternity. Conclusion and implications for practice: By comprehending the father’s way of being, acting and reacting using the kangaroo method, it will be possible to reflect upon his attitudes as caregiver and get him closer to the newborn child. Therefore, it is possible to strengthen the behaviors between father and son with the purpose of creating an emotional bond, thus allowing the inherent care regarding prematurity. Understanding the paternal behavior in the care of the premature child in the Kangaroo Method and their perceptions about care neonatal, can benefit nursing praxis from the perspective of promoting neonatal health, as well as in the prevention of diseases in relation to morbidity and Infant mortality.

Aim: understand the feelings experienced by the mother when having her premature child hospitalized in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Method: Descriptive research of a qualitative nature, performed with 11 mothers, through a semi-structured interview. The Content Analysis framework was adopted. Results: three thematic categories were identified: Suffering from the hospitalization of the premature child; Premature child care: trust in the team; Experiencing the impact of the neonatal intensive care environment. Discussion: mothers were faced with feelings such as fear, guilt over suffering and possible loss of the child, and reported feeling powerless and unable to care for the child at this time, which increased their anguish. Conclusion: mothers, when faced with the premature child in the NICU, experienced different feelings, feeling incapable and, often, moving away from the newborn. However, they reported confidence and security in the care of professionals with their children, valuing both technical aspects and interpersonal relationships.
