A translation of the penelope physics subroutines to C++, designed as an extension of the Geant4 toolkit, is presented. The Fortran code system penelope performs Monte Carlo simulation of coupled electron-photon transport in arbitrary materials for a wide energy range, nominally from 50 eV up to 1 GeV. Penelope implements the most reliable interaction models that are currently available, limited only by the required generality of the code. In addition, the transport of electrons and positrons is simulated by means of an elaborate class II scheme in which hard interactions (involving deflection angles or energy transfers larger than pre-defined cutoffs) are simulated from the associated restricted differential cross sections. After a brief description of the interaction models adopted for photons and electrons/positrons, we describe the details of the class-II algorithm used for tracking electrons and positrons. The C++ classes are adapted to the specific code structure of Geant4. They provide a complete description of the interactions and transport mechanics of electrons/positrons and photons in arbitrary materials, which can be activated from the G4ProcessManager to produce simulation results equivalent to those from the original penelope programs. The combined code, named PenG4, benefits from the multi-threading capabilities and advanced geometry and statistical tools of Geant4.

Galileo will be Europe’s own Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), which is aiming to provide highly accurate and guaranteed positioning services. Galileo E1 system has a code period of 4ms which is quadruple that of GPS C/A code. In other words, due to the large number of hypotheses in code phase at acquisition stage, a longer searching time or more hardware resource is required. It is difficult to acquire Galileo signal because of longer code length and the multiple peaks of autocorrelation function of BOC modulation. In this paper, the cyclically shift-and-combine (CSC) and BPSK-like architectures are employed to resolve the unambiguous acquisition for BOC modulation and acquires these satellite signals with hardware complexity reduction. The concept of CSC code is to modify the code structure and shorten the code period such that the acquisition burden can be decreased. Simulation results show that our proposed search algorithm can provide better performances in terms of low hardware complexity for acquiring these satellite signals and detection probability at the low value of CNR.

One of the directions to improve the efficiency of modern telecommunication systems is the transition to the use of multidimensional signals for continuous channels of information transmission. As a result of studies carried out in recent years, it has been established that it is possible to ensure high quality of information transmission in continuous channels by combining demodulation and decoding operations into a single procedure that involves the construction of a code construct for a multidimensional signal. This paper considers issues related to estimating the possibility to improve the efficiency of continuous information transmission channel by changing the signal distance of the code structure. It has been established that the code structures of such types as a hierarchical code construct of signals, a hierarchical code construct of signals with Euclidean metric, a reversible code construct of signals, a reversible code construct of signals with Euclidean metric have the potential, when used, to increase the speed of information transmission along a continuous channel. With a signal distance reduced by 10 percent or larger, it could increase by two times or faster. The estimation of the effect of reducing a signal distance on the efficiency of certain types of code structures was carried out. It has been established that the hierarchical reversible code construct, compared to the hierarchical code construct, provides a win of up to two or more times in the speed of information transmission with a halved signal distance. Implementing the modulation procedure has no fundamental difficulties, on the condition that for each code of the code construct the encoding procedure is known when using binary codes. The results reported here make it possible to build an acceptably complex demodulation procedure according to the specified types of code structures

Climate change, increasing environmental pollution, continuous loss of biodiversity, and a growing human population with increasing food demand, threaten the functioning of agro-ecosystems and their contribution to people and society. Agroforestry systems promise a number of benefits to enhance nature’s contributions to people. There are a wide range of agroforestry systems implemented representing different levels of establishment across the globe. This range and the long time periods for the establishment of these systems make empirical assessments of impacts on ecosystem functions difficult. In this study we investigate how simulation models can help to assess and predict the role of agroforestry in nature’s contributions. The review of existing models to simulate agroforestry systems reveals that most models predict mainly biomass production and yield. Regulating ecosystem services are mostly considered as a means for the assessment of yield only. Generic agroecosystem models with agroforestry extensions provide a broader scope, but the interaction between trees and crops is often addressed in a simplistic way. The application of existing models for agroforestry systems is particularly hindered by issues related to code structure, licences or availability. Therefore, we call for a community effort to connect existing agroforestry models with ecosystem effect models towards an open-source, multi-effect agroforestry modelling framework.

ABSTRACT In recent years, scholars, journals, and professional organizations in political science have been working to improve research transparency. Although better transparency is a laudable goal, the implementation of standards for reproducibility still leaves much to be desired. This article identifies two practices that political science should adopt to improve research transparency: (1) journals must provide detailed replication guidance and run provided material; and (2) authors must begin their work with replication in mind. We focus on problems that occur when scholars provide research materials to journals for replication, and we outline best practices regarding documentation and code structure for researchers to use.

The prescriptive path is the most widely used approach for commercial code compliance in the United States. Though easy to implement, prescriptive approaches do not typically discriminate between minimally compliant, high-performing and poorly performing HVAC system configurations. Hence, to meet aggressive energy and carbon reduction goals, it is clear that energy codes will need to transition from prescriptive to performance-based approaches, a transition that is riddled with several challenges. This paper discusses a new HVAC system-based performance approach (HVAC System Performance) which provides a simpler solution to HVAV system evaluation compared to whole building performance, while keeping tradeoffs limited to specific building systems. The Total System Performance Ratio (TSPR) is a metric for evaluation of overall system efficiency instead of individual component efficiency, a solution which could also eventually facilitate the transition to a 100% performance-based code structure. TSPR is a ratio that compares the annual heating and cooling load of a building to the annual energy consumed by the building’s HVAC system. A calculation software tool has been developed for determining a building’s TSPR. Already incorporated into the 2018 Washington State Energy Code, this approach is also being evaluated by ASHRAE Standard 90.l Project Committee and has the potential to provide a comprehensive performance-based approach for HVAC system evaluation and analysis.

The subject of the article is the development of a method for diagnosing data that are presented in the system of residual classes (SRC). The purpose of the article is to develop a method for fast diagnostics of data in the SRC when entering the minimum information redundancy. Tasks: to analyze and identify possible shortcomings of existing methods for diagnosing data in the SRC, to explore possible ways to eliminate the identified shortcomings, to develop a method for prompt diagnosis of data in SRC. Research methods: methods of analysis and synthesis of computer systems, number theory, coding theory in SRC. The following results were obtained. It is shown that the main disadvantage of the existing methods is the significant time of data diagnostics when it is necessary to introduce significant information redundancy into the non-positional code structure (NCS). The method considered in the article makes it possible to increase the efficiency of the diagnostic procedure when introducing minimal information redundancy into the NCS. The data diagnostics time, in comparison with the known methods, is reduced primarily due to the elimination of the procedure for converting numbers from the NCS to the positional code, as well as the elimination of the positional operation of comparing numbers. Secondly, the data diagnostics time is reduced by reducing the number of SRC bases in which errors can occur. Third, the data diagnostics time is reduced due to the presentation of the set of values of the alternative set of numbers in a tabular form and the possibility of sampling them in one machine cycle. The amount of additionally introduced information redundancy is reduced due to the effective use of the internal information redundancy that exists in the SRC. An example of using the proposed method for diagnosing data in SRC is given. Conclusions. Thus, the proposed method makes it possible to reduce the time for diagnosing data errors that are presented in the SRC, which increases the efficiency of diagnostics with the introduction of minimal information redundancy.
