Strawberry is one of the most highly consumed fruits worldwide, but is extremely perishable. This study systematically compared the effects of chitosan, sucrose, glucose, and fructose immersion on the physiology and disease development in harvested strawberries. After storage at 15 °C for 9 days, all sugar treatment groups had significantly higher total soluble solids and total anthocyanin content than those of the control group. All sugar treatment groups inhibited malondialdehyde accumulation. At the end of the storage, chitosan, glucose, and fructose maintained higher superoxide dismutase activity and chitosan maintained higher catalase activity. The chitosan and glucose groups had lowest fruit decay index, followed by sucrose and fructose groups. The fruit firmness and luster were better maintained in the glucose group. Furthermore, genes related to sucrose metabolism (e.g., FaSUS1 and FaSUS2), titratable acidity accumulation (e.g., FaMDH1, FaMDH2, FaCS1, and FaCS2), disease resistance (e.g., FaPGIP1, FaWRKY1, and FaWRKY33) and to anabolic jasmonic acid and abscisic acid pathways (e.g., FaJAZ1, FaJAZ2, FaOPR3, FaNCED1, and FaNCED2) were regulated to varying degrees, suggesting that chitosan and glucose participate in plants’ immune signaling networks and regulate disease resistance in fruit through hormone pathways. The findings provide new insights into the physiological regulation of harvested strawberries.

Decay on mango (Mangifera indica) fruit mostly derived from a fungal disease which was caused by anthracnose invasion and infestation. The falling quality of mango fruit during postharvest preservation was commonly associated with weight loss, softening, vitamin C degradation and decay. This research evaluated the synergistic effect of methyl cellulose (MC) and carvacrol (Car) in the preparation of the edible coating on the physicochemical and microbial characteristics of mango fruit during 28 days of storage at 18°C. Five groups of coating treatments were prepared as follows: A (4% MC), B (4% MC + 0.5% Car), C (4% MC + 0.75% Car), D (4% MC + 1.0% Car), E (4% MC + 1.25% Car). These coating solutions were set 40°C for mango dipping. Mango fruits were individually dipped in the respected MC-Car solutions for 15 s and left out to air-condition for 30 min to create the coating film. These mango fruits were then kept at 18°C for 28 days. In 7 day-interval, experimental fruits were sampled to estimate weight loss, firmness, ascorbic acid content, decay index. Mango fruit pre-coated by 4% MC + 1.0% Car showed the least weight loss (1.61±0.03 %) and decay index (2.19±0.03 mark) while the highest retention of firmness (47.13±0.23 N) and ascorbic acid (25.60±0.13 mg/100 g) at the end of 28 days of storage. Results showed that incorporation of 1.0% carvacrol into 4% methyl cellulose-based edible coating would extend the shelf-life of mango fruit for 28 days of preservation. The edible coating would be a promising and green alternative with minimal environmental pollution.

Rapid postharvest losses and quality deteriorations in pineapple are major challenges to growers and handlers. Chitosan-based coatings on fruit surfaces have gained importance in recent years to enhance postharvest shelf life of the fruits. In this study, aloe vera gel was added as a natural antioxidant in chitosan-based composite coating containing ZnO nanoparticles. The developed formulation was applied on the surface of freshly harvested pineapple fruits. ZnO nanoparticles were used as an antimicrobial agent. Coated pineapple fruits were evaluated for weight loss, total soluble solids, titratable acidity, decay index, maturity index, and sensory attributes, including visual appearance, periodically at 5 day interval during storage. The results showed that the coating of the fruit reduced weight loss by about 5%, and also delayed ripening and oxidative decay compared to the uncoated fruit. Thus, the developed coating formulation is a promising sustainable solution to reduce postharvest losses and to extend shelf life of pineapples.

Pineapple (Ananas comosus) was a non-climacteric fruit popularly distributed in Vietnam and other tropical regions. It was highly preferred by great appearance, wonderful texture, special flavour and perfect nutritional value. Moreover, it was also a good source of minerals, vitamins and antioxidants beneficial for human health. In harvesting season, it was highly perishable under ambient storage due to its high metabolic and moisture content resulting in quality degradation. This research evaluated the possibility of hot water treatment to the retention of quality attributes during storage. Pineapple fruits were dipped in hot water at different times and temperatures 30/35 (as control), 50/45, 52/40, 54/35, 56/30, 58/25, 60/20, 62/15 (°C/s). They were drained for 30 mins and stored at the ambient condition at the relative humidity of 85-90% for 15 days. In 3 day-interval, these fruit groups were taken to evaluate weight loss, firmness, decay index, total soluble solids (TSS), ascorbic acid. Results showed that there was a significant difference between the control and 7 treated groups. Pineapple fruits treated by hot water at 56/30 (°C/s) showed the lowest weight loss (0.15±0.05 to 1.34±0.01%), the lowest decay index (1.03±0.02 to 1.63±0.02), the most firmness (19.43±0.00 to 18.63±0.03 N), the highest TSS (24.35±0.02 to 23.01±0.01oBx), the highest ascorbic acid content (18.59±0.01 to 17.79±0.02 mg/100 g). Application of hot water submergence provided an alternative to chemical treatment to extend pineapple stability during storage and improve its marketability in distribution

Chinese chive usually becomes decayed after a short storage time, which was closely observed with the redox imbalance. To cope with this practical problem, in this report, molecular hydrogen (H2) was used to evaluate its influence in maintaining storage quality of Chinese chive, and the changes in antioxidant capacity were also analyzed. Chives were treated with 1%, 2%, or 3% H2, and with air as the control, and then were stored at 4 ± 1 °C. We observed that, compared with other treatment groups, the application of 3% H2 could significantly prolong the shelf life of Chinese chive, which was also confirmed by the obvious mitigation of decreased decay index, the loss ratio of weight, and the reduction in soluble protein content. Meanwhile, the decreasing tendency in total phenolic, flavonoid, and vitamin C contents was obviously impaired or slowed down by H2. Results of antioxidant capacity revealed that the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was differentially alleviated, which positively matched with 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity and the improved activities of antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), guaiacol peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX). Above results clearly suggest that postharvest molecular hydrogen application might be a potential useful approach to improve the storage quality of Chinese chive, which is partially achieved through the alleviation of oxidative damage happening during the storage periods. These findings also provide potential theoretical and practical significance for transportation and consumption of perishable vegetables.

AbstractMarble as ornamental and dimensional stones as well as in their natural environments show complex weathering phenomena. Physical, chemical, and biological weathering of marble are well documented. The impact of climate change on monuments and historic buildings in terms of modeling and predicting future scenarios requires new approaches to forecast the ongoing decay in the near and far future. Ultrasonic wave velocities are a powerful and sensitive tool for the damage assessment of marble. For a maximum porosity of up to 1%, ultrasonic wave velocities (P-wave velocities) are ranging between 1 km/s and over 6 km/s. Water saturation has an important influence on the magnitude and directional dependence of ultrasonic wave velocities together with the mineralogical composition and the rock fabrics. Ongoing experimental alteration approaches were used to document the state of deterioration using Vp-systematics. In addition, thermal expansion and the residual strain values after applying thermal impacts were used to introduce a new quantitative measure based on experimental length changes and volume changes. To quantify such volume changes, a so-called decay index was proposed. Marbles are sensitive to weathering and have different volume changes under exposure depending on fabric parameters. The volume extension index of marble, based on thermal expansion measurements under dry and water-saturated conditions, is proposed as a decay index for quantifying sample stability and for defining the directions of maximum and minimal dilatation. Such decay index was implemented to different marble types and it was turned out that marbles with the larger decay indexes are more prone to weathering than with smaller ones. The effect of changing climate and, in consequence, different weathering actions can help to calculate or forecast risk numbers based on the Vp data in combination with the proposed decay index especially for marbles.

ABSTRACT Model of a partial current-carrying torus loop anchored to the photosphere is analysed. Conditions of the catastrophic loss of equilibrium are considered and corresponding value of the critical decay index of external magnetic field is found. Taking into account line-tying conditions leads to non-monotonous dependence of the critical decay index on the height of the apex and length of the flux rope (its endpoints separation). For relatively short flux ropes, the critical decay index is significantly lower than unity, which is in contrast to widespread models with the typical critical decay index above unity. The steep decrease of the critical index with height at low heights is due to the sharp increase of the curvature of the flux-rope axis that transforms from a nearly straight line to a crescent.

Abstract We present a comprehensive analysis of the formation and evolution of a fan-spine-like configuration that developed over a complex photospheric configuration where dispersed negative polarity regions were surrounded by positive polarity regions. This unique photospheric configuration, analogous to the geological “atoll” shape, hosted four homologous flares within its boundary. Computation of the degree of squashing factor (Q) maps clearly revealed an elongated region of high Q-values between the inner and outer spine-like lines, implying the presence of an hyperbolic flux tube (HFT). The coronal region associated with the photospheric atoll configuration was distinctly identified in the form of a diffused dome-shaped bright structure directly observed in EUV images. A filament channel resided near the boundary of the atoll region. The activation and eruption of flux ropes from the filament channel led to the onset of four eruptive homologous quasi-circular ribbon flares within an interval of ≈11 hours. During the interval of the four flares, we observed continuous decay and cancellation of negative polarity flux within the atoll region. Accordingly, the apparent length of the HFT gradually reduced to a null-point-like configuration before the fourth flare. Prior to each flare, we observed localised brightening beneath the filaments which, together with flux cancellation, provided support for the tether-cutting model of solar eruption. The analysis of magnetic decay index revealed favourable conditions for the eruption, once the pre-activated flux ropes attained the critical heights for torus instability.

The tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is one of the many essential vegetables around the world due to its nutritive content and attractive flavor. However, its short shelf-life and postharvest losses affect its marketing. In this study, the effects of chitosan-Ruta graveolens (CS + RGEO) essential oil coatings on the postharvest quality of Tomato var. “chonto” stored at low temperature (4 °C) for 12 days are reported. The film-forming dispersions (FFD) were eco-friendly synthesized and presented low viscosities (between 0.126 and 0.029 Pa s), small particle sizes (between 1.29 and 1.56 μm), and low densities. The mature index (12.65% for uncoated fruits and 10.21% for F4 coated tomatoes), weight loss (29.8% for F1 and 16.7% for F5 coated tomatoes), and decay index (3.0 for uncoated and 1.0 for F5 coated tomatoes) were significantly different, indicating a preservative effect on the quality of the tomato. Moreover, aerobic mesophilic bacteria were significantly reduced (in five Log CFU/g compared to control) by using 15 μL/mL of RGEO. The coatings, including 10 and 15 μL/mL of RGEO, completely inhibited the mold and yeast growth on tomato surfaces without negatively affecting the consumer acceptation, as the sensorial analysis demonstrated. The results presented in this study show that CS + RGEO coatings are promising in the postharvest treatment of tomato var. “chonto”.
